Wirt County Journal May 22, 2002 Obituaries Mary E. Beymer Mary Elizabeth Beymer, 76, of Ripley, died May 14, 2002, at Jackson General Hospital. She was born June 6, 1925, in Wirt County, the daughter of the late Dewey and Mae Mullinex. She was a homemaker, a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, an avid home gardener and was a well known painter in local homes. She is survived by two sons, Roy Richard Beymer arid wife, Geri of Sumter, S.C., and Charles Ray Mullinex and wife Nancy, of Kearneysville, W. Va.; one daughter, Brenda Jo Rollins and husband, George of Sandyville; one sister, Viola Mullinex of Ripley; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clair Finn Beymer. Services were held Friday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at Vail Funeral Home with Darrell Tackett officiating. Burial is in Independence Cemetery in Sandyville. Vanessa Lynn Cooper Vanessa Lynn Cooper, infant daughter of James Donald (J.D.) and Stephanie Watkins Cooper of Elkins, went to be with the Lord Monday evening, May 13, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown. God sent this little angel into the lives of her parents and twin sister, Victoria Marie Cooper, her paternal grandparents, Richard and Vickie Wilfong Cooper of Elkins; her maternal grandparents, Jeff and Katie Amick Watkins of Elizabeth; her paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Martha LeCrone Cooper and Nancy Horton Elders, all of Missouri; her maternal great-grandparents, Betty Bain Watkins of Elizabeth and Jess and Dorothy Waller Amick of Parkersburg; her paternal great-great-grandfather, Marvin Cooper of Missouri; and her aunts and uncle, Jennifer, Jessica and Braxton Cooper of Elkins and Stormi Watkins of Elizabeth. Little Vanessa is now peacefully resting in the arms of her paternal great-grandfather, James Elder and her maternal great-grandfather, Ernest Watkins. Private graveside services were held at the Watkins Family Cemetery in Elizabeth. Lorna Fern Copen Lorna Fern Copen, 80, passed away April 22, 2002, at Magnolia Care Center. Mrs. Copen was born in Elizabeth, the daughter of the late James A. and Leana Mehl Kidwell. She had been a resident of Barberton most of her life. She was a homemaker. Survivors include three sons, Gary and Randy of Barberton and Roger (Cathy) of Wadsworth; two grandsons, Jonathan Copen and David (Jasmine) Copen; three great grandchildren, Sarah, Yazmine and Caleb and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ray D. Copen, and a grandson, Matthew. Services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hahn-Hostetler Funeral Home. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Luvena DeWees Luvena DeWees, 83, Rt. 2, Davisville, died May 16, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born April 6, 1919, in Wirt County, the only child of the late Charles and Lura Cleona Sheets Daughtery. Mrs. DeWees attended the Kanawha United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Luella and David Powell of Racine, O.; daughter-in-law, Vickie DeWees of North Richland Hills, Texas; five grandchildren, Julie Lucas of Davisville, Kelly Robinson of Parkersburg, Traci Lovell of Texas, David Powell of Fishkill, N.Y., and Doug Powell of Racine; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Mauree Holbert. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, LeRoy DeWees, in 1975 and a son, LaVon DeWees. Services were held Monday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Vaughan Funeral Home with the Rev. L. Norman Butler officiating. Interment followed in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

Geo. M. Ott, of South Parkersburg, a former resident of this county, greeted many of his old friends here on Saturday. C.V. Mills, who is employed at Weirton, came home Friday and remains till Monday evening before returning to his work. His family is visiting relatives near Industry this week. Mr. and Mrs. John Kiger and daughter of Huntington, are visiting Mrs. Kiger's mother, Mrs. Jas A. Wiseman Saturday and Sunday. Linn Thorn, Arthur Wolverton and Okey Riddle left last Friday for Akron, OH in search of employment. Brooks Sims who is manager of the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co's stores at Marietta, Oh. with his family attended the Commencement exercise here on Saturday and visited relatives till Sunday evening. Paul Snodgrass, Kenneth Adams and Horace Riddle left Sunday for Ohio in search of employment. Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Smith of Sanoma, were visitors in Elizabeth Monday and Mr. Smith was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office while here. Pearl Gant of Parkersburg was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office on Monday afternoon while a brief visitor to our town. Lee Roberts, his mother, Mrs. A.A. Roberts and grandmother, Mrs. Phebe Pepper of near Hartley, were Parkersburg visitors on Monday and called on relatives here as they returned Monday evening. R.A. Monroe, who recently moved to Parkersburg a short time ago spent Sunday and Monday at his farm near Cherry and was a business visitor in Elizabeth on his return home Monday evening. W.C. Deever, one of Standing Stone's pioneer residents and good citizen, was a business visitor in town on Tuesday and paid the Journal Office a pleasant call while here. Rev. A.F. Monroe and family moved to their new home on the Palestine-Elizabeth road this week. Sheriff O.W. Coplin, Assessor M.L. Hickman, O.J. Daniel, County Clerk S.E. Parsons and Deputy Assessor E.J. Roberts made a trip to Charleston the latter part of last week in the interest of the county in regards to the assessment of gas lands owned by Godfrey I. Cabot. May 17, 1962 Proposed River Road Extension of Route 5 At a joint meeting May 10 of the Self Study, Self Help Association and the members of the Over All Economic Development Planning Commission, the following resolution was presented by Louis Reed, President of the Self Help Assoc and adopted by all members present: Go on record as favoring the extension of State Route Number 5 or a part of Route No. 14 from Elizabeth down the West Bank of the Little Kanawha to a junction with interstate Route Number 77, following in a general way old right-of-way of the Little Kanawha Railroad Company. Old Thorn House Razed Last Week Joe Cheuvront, with a crew of local workmen, last week tore down the old residence and garage building on a lot adjacent, to the Elizabeth Post Office now owned by Dick Thorn, local merchant, it being the home of his late parents, Van and Georgia Thorn and family for several years when Dick was a small boy. Cleanup consisted of hauling away lumber and the cutting down of two large trees that stood on the property. Parking Meter Posts Being Set Posts are being set in parking areas of the business section of Elizabeth this week for die installation of parking meters in conformity with Town Council action early in March. A workman for the contracting firm setting the posts said Wednesday that the post setting should be completed this week. WCHS Newspaper Earns Top "U" Journalism Rating Wirt County High School's monthly newspaper, The Echo, has received "All-Star Honors" from the School of Journalism at West Virginia University. Six high school newspapers in the state received this award. Besides winning, this award is the highest award that can be awarded to a newspaper in this state.

Wirt County Journal May 15, 2002 Obituaries John "Paul" Strickling John "Paul" Strickling, 84, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Mifflin (O.) Care Center. Mr. Strickling was born Oct. 25, 1917, in Elizabeth, the son of the late John William and Nora (Dent) Strickling. He received his Master of Education degree at Ohio University in Athens, before going to Mansfield in 1955 where he taught social studios for Mansfield City Schools until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wirt County and Mayflower Congregational Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Kathy Strickling of Cincinnati and John and Pat Strickling of Gahanna, O.; one daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Ronald Applegate of Mansfield; one sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Charles Whitehair of Elizabeth; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Wilma Evelyn Strickling; and two sisters, Virginia (Tom) Thelma Edwards and Vivian Coltrider. Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Finefrock-Williams Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Wilson officiating. Burial followed at Mansfield Memorial Park. Sharon Wheaton Sharon Ann Wheaton, 46, of Buchtel, O., died May 10, 2002, in Columbus, O. She was born Oct. 25, 1955, in Parkersburg, a daughter of Wilma Jean Farren Ledsom of Elizabeth and the late Arthur Wheaton. She was an art teacher at an Alternative School System in Bastrop, Texas. She received her B.A. in art education from Ohio University. She is survived by three daughters, Michelle Starchier of Kernersville, N.C., Angela (Jeremy) Shockey of Shade, O., and Rachael Echard of Reynoldsburg, O.; one grandson, Zachery Starcher of Kernersville; two granddaughters, Katrina Shockey and Isabella Shockey of Shade; two sisters, Ida Mae (Keith) Joy of Elizabeth and Mary Twilley of Murray City, O.; three brothers, Bryan Wheaton of Athens.O., David Wheaton of Murray City and Mark Wheaton of Columbus; one special friend, Rodney Galentine of Buchtel; and one brother-in-law, Donald Smith of Columbus. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Smith. Services were held Monday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens with the Rev. David Cogar officiating. Burial is in the Torch Cemetery. Ada Davis Williams Ada "Jean" Davis Williams, 81, formerly of Parkersburg, passed away May 11, 2002, at Harmar Place of Marietta. She was born March 21, 1921, in Wirt County, a daughter of the late Thorton and Mary M. Snyder Patterson. Jean was retired from A.W. Cox Department Store and was a member of Seventh Street United Methodist Church. Surviving is one son, Francis "Pete" Davis of Deerwalk; one nephew, Edward "Mike" Newlon of Marietta; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law, Edith Patterson of Beach City, O., and Delores Patterson of Elizabeth; and several nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Paul Williams and husband Jesse M. Davis; and several brothers and sisters. Services were held Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home with Pastor Bernard Vandergrift officiating. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Seventh Street United Methodist Church, Parkersburg.
Wirt County Journal May 15, 2002 Historical Society needs Civil War items Wirt County Historical Society is looking for anything and everything about the Civil War for their display. Documents, stories, photo's, etc. They will make copies and keep them in their Historical Files. Also, anyone with memories, photo's, etc., about one- or two-room schools. The society hopes to publish a book on these small country schools.

Pepper, of Munday, member of the Board of Education for Burning Springs, was a visitor here and at Parkersburg on Friday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Kidwell, good folks of Two Ripple, were pleasant callers at the Journal Office on Friday of last week while in town shopping. Charlie Jones, of Newark, was a visitor here on Saturday. He has been working in the oil field at Pratt, Kanawha County and is home for a few days while waiting for a rig. He says that they are getting some big gas wells in that field which range from five to fourteen million. Oscar Edwards, progressive merchant and teacher, of Dulin, was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office while in town looking after business matters on Friday of last week. J.M. Gates, one of Reedy District's progressive farmers and good citizen, was a business visitor in town on Monday. John G. Tippens has accepted a position with the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. and will begin training at Parkersburg on Monday of next week. Samuel Thorn one of Palestine's good citizens, was a business visitor in Elizabeth on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert C. Cline of Vall's Creek, McDowell County, are visiting Mrs. Cline's parents, Rev. and Mrs. A.F. Monroe of Burning Springs for a few days. They were visitors in Elizabeth on Monday. B.D. Williams, local service station man, has sold his farm on the Elizabeth-Palestine road to a man from Spencer. Roy Elliott, of Oil Rock with his mother, Mrs. G.W. Elliott, of near Hartley, and children, Lucile, Ernest and Pauline, were visiting in Elizabeth Sunday. Mr. Elliott was driving a new Oldsmobile car. G.W. Munday, a good citizen of Straight Creek, was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office on Wednesday morning while en route to Williamstown to attend the M. Richter funeral. V.A. Rader, a good citizen of Right Reedy, was a visitor here Thursday morning. He is suffering from a catarrhal infection of his left hand. May 10, 1962 Wrestle With Cow Injures Sam Cooper Sam Cooper of Creston, who was looking about a cow on Island Run Wednesday afternoon, received a bad injury and is a patient in Camden Clark Hospital. Mr. Cooper got a rope on the animal but couldn't hold her and in the tussel a loop of the rope caught around his foot and around a tree. knocking him to the ground, where he remained unconscious for a half hour or more. It is reported that he has a broken bone in his foot and is recovering nicely. Bus Drivers Ask Pay Raise Wirt County Board of Education meeting in regular May session with all members present last Thursday heard almost the total representation of the school bus drivers ask for a pay raise for the 1962-63 school term. Alfred Monroe, head mechanic and driver acted as the spokesman for the delegation. They stated that they are $50 under paid compared to Wood County. Fire Truck Called To Pomroy Home The first fire alarm for a long time in Elizabeth sounded on Friday afternoon and the local volunteer unit went to the Don Pomroy home and extinguished a small blaze in a comer of the Pomroy garage. The fire is believed to have started from a trash basket in which a live cigarette may have been tossed. Damage was not extensive. Plan to Give Swim Lessons In order to make advanced plans for swimming classes to be given as soon as the new Russell A Woodyard Memorial Pool opens for the first time this year, those in charge would like to have an idea as to how many would be interested. The cost will be $12 for 12 lessons and the instructor will be Mrs. Glen Seymour, wife of our local State Police Trooper.

Mr. Bunner was born April 9, 1941 at Munday, Wirt County, a son of the late James L. and Alma Jones Bunner. He was a millwright and maintenance mechanic and a longtime Florida resident. He is survived by a former wife, Joan Vance Bunner of Seffner, Fla., three sons, Argil Bunner, Jr. of Tampa Fla., Ronald Scott Bunner of Plant City, Fla., and Steven D. Bunner of Seffner, Fla., three brothers, Roy Bunner of High Point, N.C,. Charles Bunner of Parkersburg and Basil Bunner of Holly, Mich., one sister, Geraldine Miller of St. Albans and one granddaughter, Joan Elizabeth Bunner of Seffner, Fla. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Busch Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Wolverton Cemetery, Munday. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. Thursday. Okey R. Lockhart Okey R. Lockhart, 92, of Parkersburg, died April 30, 2002, at SunBridge Nursing Home. Mr. Lockhart was born Aug. 23, 1909, in Wirt County, a son of the late Amiziar and Florence Thompson Lockhart. He retired from the American Viscose in 1972, after 28 years of service. He is survived by one son, Ray N. Lockhart of Spencer; one stepson and his wife, William D. (Bill) and Mary Stoops of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Treva Lockhart Chidester and Kimberly Hartshorn both of Williamstown, Sandra Young and Liz Irwin both of Parkersburg, Allan Stoops of Waverly and Kevin Stoops of Sunset Beach, N.C.; one brother, Foster Lockhart of North Carolina; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a very special friend, Anna Grogg; and several nieces and nephews. Lynch, 92, of Palestine, passed away Friday, May 3, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Lynch was born in Marion County, the son of the late Joseph and Vinnie Lockhart Lynch. He was a member of the Mayberry Church and lifetime resident of Wirt County. His work experience ranged from factory worker, custodian, grave digger and was a farmer. Surviving are three sons, Carl Lynch Jr. of Palestine, Ira Lynch of Creston and Joe Lynch of Palestine; seven daughters, Maude Reed, Edna Windland, Betty McCoy, Bessie Martin, Libby Cogar, Sandy Lowe all of Palestine and Rosie Little of Elizabeth; two foster sons and two foster daughters; 25 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vora C. Buck Lynch, in 1989; one son, Roy Lynch, in 1974; five brothers; and five sisters. Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Wirt County, the daughter of the late William Robert Davis and Audra Moore Davis. She was married July 15, 1945, to Lewis Everett Smith, who died Jan. 12, 1998. Mrs. Smith retired from JC Penney. She was a homemaker and member of the HCMC Auxiliary. Surviving is one daughter, Lois Elaine Smith (Mike) Mecord of Paris; two sons, William Lee (Kyle Taylor) Smith of Milan and Douglas Paul (Janice) Smith of Columbia; one sister, Eloise Cline of Elizabeth; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Holly Marie Smith. Services were held April 9 at East Wood Church of Christ with the Rev. Ada Munday Wilson Ada E. Munday Wilson. 93, of Munday, Wirt County, peacefully passed away Thursday evening, May . 2, 2002, at Worthington Manor. Mrs. Wilson was born June 4, 1908, at Munday, Wirt County, a daughter of the late Thomas James Bell and Mary Ellen Richard Bell DeWeese. She was a life long homemaker and a former custodian for the Wirt County Board of Education. She was a longtime member of Bell Chapel United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Munday and his wife, Phyllis, of Munday; a grandson, Michael Munday and his wife, Melissa of Munday; two granddaughters, Pam Lifke and her husband Steve of Akron and Melissa Hopkins and her husband, Steve of Johnson City, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Camron Hopkins, Madison and Lyndsey Munday and Claire and Evan Lifke; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Munday, in 1963; her second husband, Dorsey Wilson, in 1989; one brother, Shirley Bell; and two sisters, Addie Bell and Mildred Pettit. Pomroy is visiting her husband, who is now located at Grafton for a few days. Mrs. Eliza Backus and granddaughters, Misses Goldie and Bessie Backus of Parkersburg, visited the former's sister Mrs. Emily McCray of near Hartley the latter part of last week. Miss Esther Woodyard, of Vienna, was a visitor in Elizabeth on Friday of last week. H.F. Martin and son of Two Ripple, were visitors in Elizabeth on Saturday. The son was called home a few days ago on account of the sickness of his mother. Lloyd Young, of Lexington, Ky., a former Wirt Countian who has extensive oil holdings in Kentucky and his brother, Clarence Young of Parkersburg were visitors in Elizabeth on last Saturday. Cecil Coe, a good citizen of Palestine, was a visitor in town on Monday morning. R.D. Ott of Palestine, one of the Road Supervisors for Elizabeth District, transacted business with the County Court here on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Andrick, of Somerville Fork, were visitors in Elizabeth on Monday. Garnett Enoch, good citizen and farmer of Pee Wee, was a business visitor in town on Monday and a pleasant caller at the Journal Office while here. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Somerville and son, good folks of Somerville Fork, were prominent visitors in town on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Woodyard former residents of Elizabeth, have erected a new residence at Vienna and are moving to it this week. J.W. Thorn, a prominent citizen of Thorn's Run transacted business in town the first part of last week. Rural Mail Carrier, Raymond Andrick of Palestine, was a pleasant caller at the Journal Office on Monday afternoon while in town on business. Mrs. F.E. Fint and baby Elizabeth, visited relatives in Parkersburg from Saturday until Monday last. Several of the good citizens of Right Reedy were here before the County Court on Monday in the interest of securing a bridge across Right Reedy at the Thomas Ford. Emmett C. Andrick, local mail carrier on Route 2, on Saturday night dealt for I.P. Thorn's interest in the Thorn Brothers store on Court St. The deal has been pending for several days but the parties did not get together till Saturday night. Mr. Thorn has not yet made known what kind of business he will enter. May 3, 1962 Amos Seeks Answer To Bond, Levy Question Wirt County Assessor Kendall Amos this week has in his hands perhaps the hottest question of the day in trying to determine whether or not to put the excess school bond and levy figures on the tax books for the coming fiscal year. If the figures are on the books and effected in taxes, funds can become available for a Wirt County school building program and for additional operating funds. If the figures are not put on the books, there will be a delay of at least a year before any building can be done, or extra needed operational funds can become available for the Board of Education. Golden Horseshoe Winners Announced The four Wirt County winners of Golden Horseshoes were determined last Friday as result of tests given the top 18 eighth grade students in the county at Elizabeth Elementary School under supervision of Louis Rollins and Peggy Cooper. The winners were: Larry Rogers, Lynn McCauley, Roy Lee Mace and Carol Lee McVey Hope To Finish Pool By May 30 There is still an urgent need for funds in order to finish the Woodyard Memorial Swimming Pool in time for a planned opening date or Memorial Day, May 30, 1962 the Journal learned this week. Funds are just about exhausted with some bills now pressing and other finishing work needing to be done.

Mrs. Crites was born June 21, 1948, in Oberlin, O., a daughter of the late Herbert F. and Mary J. Welch Leininger. She was a housewife. April 26, 1962 Board OK's Largest Budget in History Wirt County Board of Education last week gave final approval to the 1962-63 budget, which is the largest in the history of the county at $316,004. This budget will go for administration, instructions, operation of plants, attendance service, maintance of plants, and for capital outlay. Miss Sharon Bumgarner was awarded the Legislative scholarship with Miss Susan Smith being named alternate. Band Concert Friday Night The annual Spring Concert of the superior Wirt High Band under the direction of Donald Markey, will be presented this Friday, April 27, at the gymnasium. Starting time is 8 p.m. Admission will be 75 cents per person. Those people who purchased band candy during the recent candy sale will be admitted at a reduced price when presenting their coupons.
