    3. Does anyone have information on the Lee Cemetery along side Lee Creek and the highway in Newark, near where Lee Creek dumps into the Little Kanawha. The last time I was there, several years ago, it was totally unmaintained and overgrown with weeds. The markers were all knocked down. There was at that time a private airfield right along side, immediately west of the cemetery site. Are there any steps being taken to clean up the cemetery area? It's my understanding that Richard and Tabitha are buried at that location although I don't know if there are grave markers or not. I believe I am a descendent of Richard Lee and Tabitha Darnell, although there is a question mark in the second generation after Richard. My descendents I'm sure about is John Lee & Margaret Cunningham. John, I believe is in the second generation after Richard. If some has proof that John and Richard are related, I would appreciate knowing for sure the connection. Also if anyone know, where did Richard come from before he arrived is what is now WV? Thanks Lew Coleman

    1. Ball Cemetery
    2. Mark and/or Paula
    3. Hi Everyone, With the help of Molly Ball Stoddard, and the foot work of my father (Gary). We have created a listing for the Ball Cemetery, about 2 miles up Tucker's Creek from Elizabeth. The Ball Cemetery is a very pretty and well kept ground. I wish the pictures were taken in the spring. The Ball family members were important early settlers to the Tucker's Creek hollow just up from Elizabeth. They came to the area with the Bennett and Steele families during the War of 1812. This family built a school and provided education to themselves and neighboring families. They were also members of the first church (Methodist) organized on Tucker's Creek by Reverend Francis Gutherie. The Ball Cemetery has many names of early Wirt County, all related to the original settlers. These names are: Ball, Barnes, Bennett, Berry, Boone, Deem, Eaton, Gates, Mercer, Milstead, and Roberts. The direct link to the listing is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~garfield/cemetery/ball.htm. Note that everything from "http" to "htm" must be on the address line. You can also link through http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~garfield/. Click on "Here are some listings of cemeteries in the Wirt County Area." Click on "Ball Cemetery, Tucker's Creek, Wirt County." Note that most all of the names are links to pictures of the gravestone. The picture will appear in a new window (usually). Be sure to let Molly know what you think, and let me know if something is broke. Thanks Mark

I don't know what the correct spelling is ~ a little research for you to do probably. You said your g-grandmother married William Haddix so I would say this is in all probability your line, however, you should verify the information. A good place to start would be to obtain her death certificate now that you know the date of death and place. It should give the correct spelling of her name as well as who her parents were and her husband's name. Good Luck! Yes, Virginia is still living, in California.

Wirt Board Again Appeals Its Case Wirt County Board of Education again went to the WV Supreme Court Tuesday, asking that the Wirt County Court be compelled to recount the votes of the last December School Bond and Levy election prior to June 7 instead of the date set Monday by the Court for June 11. The controversy this time is because of the June 7 date on which the Assessor is to have tax books in the hands of the Sheriff. Assessor. Ken Amos will not put the extensions for the bond and levy on the books without direct order from higher officials to do so, and contends that he is acting legally. Jim Cheuvront Asks Recount Wirt County Court, meeting all day Monday, May 21, in regular session, set the date for a recount of the votes for the last Dec. School Bond and Levy Election for next June 11, pending receipt of the written opinion of the West Virginia Supreme Court on their ruling handed down last month. James A. Cheuvront, 25-vote loser in the Republican nomination for House of Delegates to former Delegate Raymond F. Morgan, gave bond before the Court in the amount of $300 for a recount of the votes. Court set June 19 for this recount.
