    1. FYI to Listers
    2. I think it would be helpful for Listers to know that Wirt County became a break-off from Wood County in 1848, and both counties became W VA during the Civil War (1862). Prior to that they were both VA. This caused me a lot of confusion until I looked it up and also found that my gggrandfather William Samuel Ball was the 1st listed in the new county Deed Book. 2. Hello, listers: Now that the lists are warming up again after summer doldrums, I repeat a plea I sent to WVWOOD earlier. Will hope so much to hear from someone with SHEPARD/etc. or PHELPS connections. Thanks in advance. Ann in NC Hello: I am very eager for anything on the parentage, siblings, ancestry of Dr. JAMES WILLIAM SHEPPEARD, b. Wood County 1822, or his early life there and/or in Marietta, OH and Wirt County, VA.; and ditto for RUTH LUCINDA PHELPS who married Dr. Sheppeard at Parkersburg Nov 22 1843. They were my G G grandparents. The doctor became a significant pioneer figure in two Kansas counties; I know about their later life and children, but absolutely nothing of their background in WV, then VA, and earlier. As I also don't know when the unusual SHEPPEARD spelling began, I'd be glad to hear of or from any SHEPARDs, SHEPPERDs etc. OF ANY SPELLING whose ancestry dates to early 19-c Wood County. I note SHEPPARD names at the Mineral Wells cemetery. Does anyone know Mineral Wells well? Also would appreciate info about Dr. W.A.M. REED, under whom Dr. SHEPPEARD studied medicine in Wood Co.,presumably around 1840. Thanks so much for any and all help... Ann in N.C.

    2. My Gr.Grandfather SOLOMON E. MURPHY was born in l846 Jackson Co. VA. His mother's name was MARY. Do not know her maiden name. I am hoping that some one out there will have a missing name and maybe this will click. SOLOMON and his mother end up in Lee Co. Ia. l856 Census. She has married CHARLES PARSONS and SOLOMON is listed among the family. CHARLES family also went to Ia., Lee Co.. It is believed his first wife died either in Va. or on the way to Ia. leaving him with several children. CHARLES' family was from the Frozen Camp/Wirth's Bottom area of Va.. A large group of this family went at the same time to Ia. CHARLES AND MARY PARSONS moved their family to the Revere/Dumas, Clark Co., Mo. area. CHARLES d. l865 and is buried in the Prairie Church Cemetery near Revere, Mo. SOLOMON & his mother must have kept up with news from back home. He had his birth date and place well imprinted in his mind. On his Civil War papers and his marriage, this information is always there. The VA - WVA division was a historical fact by the time he was in his early teens. SOLOMON volunteered into the UNION ARMY Co. H. 39th Reg't Mo. Infantry 8 Aug. l864 @ Hannibal, Mo., At 19 years of age. I have an induction poster with his name listed among those enlistees. His home mailing address and where next of kin lived was Croton, Lee Co. Ia.. SOLOMON married MARY BILLS, daughter of PRESSLEY BILLS & MARY DECAMP OF WATERLOO, CLARK CO. MADISON TWP. Va., marriage record Page: 8/24/1832 Text: Josiah Lee Anna Rebecca Whaley About Joshua: Joshua was admitted to the Bar, and practised law in Elizabeth, then Burning Springs a mile from his home. In that early day there were two ways by which one could become a lawyer, read law in a lawyer's office until he became "well grounded in the law" and 2. attain the same proficiency by home study. In either case the applicant had to appear before a judge with a lawyer friend who would have to vouch for his character and period of study, and move for his admission to the bar. Few applicants were rejected. This practise was continued until the early 1900's. (From the book by H. B. Lee, Burning Springs and other Tales of the Little Kanawha River.) The Elizabeth Messenger, edited by Harry H. Holmes and published at Elizabeth on April 6, 1900, carried the following obituary of Joshua Lee: Joshua Lee, probably the oldest citizen of Wirt County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sidney White, on Spring Creek, March 29, 1900. He was born in Wood County September 29, 1805. He was the father of 10 children, 9 of whom are now living.
