    2. I wanted to say how very much l have enjoyed these and always look forward to more. I print them so my father can read them ( He's 73 now). It gives him great pleasure since he was born on Buffalo Ridge and my grandparents, Albert and Velma Hupp had a home in Elizabeth. We see many names from our family mentioned, such as Sims, Thorn, Rader, Sheppard, and Sommerville. Did the Journal publish before 1920? Thanks so much, Barbara Hupp Charles

    3. Wirt County Journal March 10, 1999 Senator Donna J. Boley's Column LITTLE KANAWHA PARKWAY AUTHORITY The Little Kanawha Parkway Authority which is comprised of members from Braxton, Calhoun, Gilmer, Wirt and Wood counties held an informal meeting in Charleston last week. Their goal is to link interstates 77 and 79 through these counties with a four-lane road. The result would be not only better access for residents but expansion of businesses and better roads to entice new businesses to locate in these counties. Highways would open up the inner counties, some of which have the highest unemployment in the state. The authority is requesting funding for a feasibility study.

    3. Senator Donna J. Boley of the West Virginia Legislature has a brief column in the Wirt County Journal every week of the session. This one in the March 10, 1999 edition, I think, is of interest. WV SOLD TO HIGHEST BIDDER FLASH SB-380 passed Senator 22-12 today Friday. Goes to the House. Thanks to all who came down to fight it, but it looks like the gamblers won! My mail has been full of letters opposing an "expansion of gambling" in West Virginia. Yet, the Greenbrier casino bill, the coin drop video lottery bill and legalizing the gray machines are moving through the Legislature. $68,000 was given to 1998 legislative candidates by the gambling industry. Evidently, it appears that the votes are there. When casino gambling moved through Senate Finance, I was asked repeatedly not to call for a roll call vote. I was told by leadership that no one would sustain my motion (it only took one other person). So I instead asked to be recorded as voting "NO." Two other senators asked to be recorded as voting no, Love and Helmick. It would appear the others are willing to go on record for casino gambling. There is a misconception out there that the casino gambling can be confined to the Greenbrier. I would bet the farm that once it is at the Greenbrier it will quickly spread.

    3. Wirt County Journal March 10, 1999 Remember When ... >From the Wirt County Journal files July 23, 1920 Educational Items Misses Hazel Wright and Madeline Davis, two of Spring Creek District's progressive lady teachers, were visiting in Elizabeth Monday. We notice from an exchange that work has begun on the erection of the Calhoun County High School at Grantsville. We have been informed that Willie Fought has been appointed principal of the local graded school. Chester Starcher has been reelected principal of the graded school at Carolina, West Virginia, at a salary of $l50 per month as principal and $30 per month for looking after the heating plant, making a total salary of $180 per month. Wirt County spent approximately $50,000 for school work this year. Did you have your boy or girl in school every day to get the benefit of this expenditure. Farm Bureau Notes James Batton and Will Higgins have agreed to be dairy demonstrators. They will keep account of the amount of milk given by each cow and at the end of the month take a butter fat test. In this way the profit or loss for each cow can be accurately determined. The livestock committee for the Wirt County Farm Bureau will be C. H. Bumgarner, Ralph Roberts, Bert Robinson and Lee Sheppard. There will be a 30 percent increase in freight rates about September 1. For this reason we wish to make our order for fertilizer just as soon as possible. Four poultry calling demonstrations will be held in the county August 5th and 6th. The places will be mentioned next week. B.F. Creech, the man who banished the scrub bull out of Roane County and is now line specialist for the state, will be in the county for a few days to help work out definite plans for eliminating the scrub bull out of Wirt County. The Federal Reserve Banks have worked out a satisfactory system of credit for wool dealers. While we may not get as much as last year for wool, the market will improve soon. Local & Personal Jasper Haught, of Brushy Fork, attended the circus at Parkersburg and visited till Monday evening before returning. I. J Martin of Creston was a pleasant caller at the Journal office on last Saturday while in town; he was visiting his mother who lives on Route 1. Misses Dorothy and Otia Parks left last Sunday for a visit with relatives near Smithville; they expect to visit Akron and Baltimore before returning home. June 6, 1958 Frank Munday Jr. New Home Started Frank Munday Jr. appeared before Elizabeth Town Council at the regular meeting Tuesday night of this week to make application in person for a building permit for anew residence on Cherry St., between the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ludwig and children. Munday Starts Building New Home at Munday It was reported here this week that Kenneth Munday has started building a new home near the Leonard Mundays, and nearby the E. U. B. Church at Munday, W.Va. Roy Richards and others will do the carpentry work on the home. Mills' Moved to Ohio; Villers' Back Here Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Mills, who have resided in Elizabeth for the past several months, moved on Saturday, May 17, to Hamden, Vinton County, Ohio, where they have bought property. They sold their home here on Prunty Addition to Earl Villers, from whom they had purchased it. Work Is Progressing On New Roy Mace Home Work is progressing nicely on the start of construction for a new ranch style, seven-room and bath residential property for Roy Mace and family, Court St., City, adjacent to the B. B. Sims home. Mrs. Mace is the former Miss Lois Mason and is a member of the local high school facility. They have two children, Sandra and Roy Lee. Reynolds Opening TV Service Shop V. D. Reynolds of Route 1, Palestine, who lives with his father, J. B. Reynolds, was a recent Elizabeth visitor, and said he is opening his own T. V. service shop by Wilson's Store at Blue Goose, Rt. 1, Palestine, in the immediate future. J. H. and Don Mills Here J. H. Mills of Reinersville, O., and son, Don Mills, of Toledo, were Elizabeth visitors on Thursday of this week. Howard expressed his pleasure at seeing the new buildings underway here at the present time. He said that Mrs. Mills remains well and able to work. We missed getting to see Don on this trip. His son, Joe, was scheduled to graduate from high school this spring.

    3. You had mentioned a Roena Ott. Do you have any information on her as I am looking for family information on Katherine Ott. Thought it might be the same family. Katherine Ott married David Lott. When she was about 60, she moved in with her son George Washington Lott and his second wife. When she died, I can not find where she is buried or any other information on her. Thanks and thank you for the little story. 3. Wirt County Journal March 3, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files July 16, 1920 Oil Field Items Ray Holbert of near Munday, who has been working in the Texas oil fields for the past several months, is visiting in this county for a few days. O. O. Smith of the Richter Oil Co. was a business visitor here between trains on Saturday morning. The Lockhart and Cox well on the Hale farm on Parish Fork was drilled in Tuesday and is dry. Hartley Items The South Penn has made a new location near Creston on the W. T. Campbell farm. They are now moving material on location which will soon be drilling. The roads in this part of the county are in a very bad condition. It seems very discouraging for automobile owners for the summer, but seems very encouraging over the new road amendment that will be voted upon this fall. Stockholders meeting A meeting of the stockholders of the Elizabeth Flint Glass Manufacturing Co. was held on Monday night of this week. At this meeting $2,000 additional stock was sold. It is planned to sell another $2,000 stock which will, it is thought, run the plant till the products are on the market. It is planned to begin operations at the close of the Glass Workers vacation about the middle of next month. Killed by Accident Reirl Arthur, of Creston, was killed while working on his saw mill on Little Creek on Thursday of last week. He was tightening a tap near the circle saw while it was running, was topped over when it is thought the saw caught his glove jerking him onto the saw. He was sawed into, killing him instantly, the heart being removed from the body. Mr. Arthur was a young man 29 years of age, who stood high in the esteem of his community. He was a soldier who served more than a year in France, was a church and Sunday school worker and will be greatly missed in his community. HENRY FORD has bought a railroad, which runs across a large part of Ohio, in order to insure his factories at Detroit an abundant supply of coal. We move that he be invited to extend it up to the head of the Little Kanawha where vast coal territories are yet undeveloped. Local & Personal L. P. Thorn has invested in a New Overland automobile. Henry Daugherty, we were informed, has bought an Ice Cream and Confectionery stand and has gone into business at Creston. Morgan Hickman has bought the A. T. Adams property on Pike Street, and the latter will move to Parkersburg where he expects to build a house on a lot which he owns near the Vitrolite Works. Frank Munday, Mr. and Mrs. James Kemp, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Craft, of Hartley, passed through Elizabeth Saturday en route to Parkersburg. May 30, 1958 Wirt Producers Shipped 9,830 lbs. Wool Last Week The 1958 crop of wool in Wirt County (through the two organized Wool Pools) amounted to 9,830 pounds. Shipments were made the early part of last week. The 37 producers of the Peewee Wool Pool list 5,959 pounds and the 23 producers of the Elizabeth Pool listed 3,871 pounds for shipment. Wool was shipped by truck from Wirt County, and went by rail from Parkersburg to Boston. Dotson To Head Wirt Lodge No. 82 Richard (Dick) Dotson, City, will head the local Masonic Lodge for the coming year, it was announced following the regular meeting on Tuesday night. The new lodge year will begin with the first of June, and Dotson and other officers will be installed at the June 10 meeting. Dotson was elected worshipful master Tuesday by members of Wirt Lodge No. 82, A. F. & A. M. Students Say Citizens of Wirt Are 'Complacent' Thirty-two persons attending a Tuesday night, May 20, session of the Wirt County Self Study-Self Help Program in the local Baptist Church basement heard six students of Marietta College express briefly their finds and their summary comments from an intensive survey-study they have been taking for several weeks. The consensus opinion seems to be that Wirt people generally seem "too well satisfied" with what they have (summed up as "complacency.") Other opinion-summaries: "Some Wirt people complain about their own community situations but do nothing about." "Too many of the older people seem to feel that youth don't need to do anything - some want youth to have nothing, to do nothing. "Some citizens think young people ought to work like they themselves had to work 'in the good old days.'" .... Wirt School Supt. Charles A. Cline, and retiring president of Elizabeth Lions club, told the small group at last week's meeting, "If young people would state their "No 1" most important want to the grown-ups, the Lions Club would attempt to do something with or for them." COPLIN HOSPITAL notes for the past week include the following: Rev. H. H. Saunders, City, remains a patient yet this week forllowing surgery performed week before last. Mrs. Dorcy Wilson, Munday, is a surgical patient. Mrs. Thomas Joy, Rt. 2, City, reentered the hospital Tuesday of this week as a medical patient, after having been a surgical patient recently. Jean King, Rt. 3, City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otha King, had a tonsillectomy operation Wednesday morning.

    3. This is beautiful.. I should like to copy this message for my page that I am now in the process of making. May I? Marianne PS I have to add this. I am not from WV but a tiny town in NJ. I am doing this for my grandson. I have met the most wonderful people and seen the most beautiful places. I can not believe that WV has put all this on a computer sites. They are very proud of their heritage. I had forgotten by living here in sin city, that there are still people like the ones in WV. My grandson is related to the other Lott's, the other George Washington Lott that married Nancy Lockhart, and the Watson's of Palestine. I wish I had known them. Having done my own family and having been to the little cemetaries as growning up, I can certainly appreciate how you feel.
