    1. Re: [WVWIRT-L] Wirt Co. Historical Society
    2. Hello List! Taken from my copy of the Roane County Journal, March 1999 "Congratulations..to the newly formed Wirt County Historical Society!! Their meetings are on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Dora Bee Woodyard Library in the Wirt County High School on Mulberry Street. Annual membership dues are $10.00 per individual. Their next meeting will be on April 19th. Members will discuss future programs and plans to begin a newsletter. One of the first goals of the new Society is to help preserve records in the court house. Vice-president Adith Spencer is currently doing an inventory of the oldest record books to see which are most in need of repair or rebinding before helping to apply for a grant. Wirt County's oldest books include Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages dated 1854 but now includes Register of Marriage Bonds beginning when the county formed in 1848. The Society will also work for the preservation of area buildings, monuments and markers that have historical significance." My understanding is that there has only been one meeting so far. Per Adith, one of the first projects is to add to the genealogy area at the Dora Bee Woodyard Library. They are encouraging members and anyone who is interested to donate Pedigree Charts etc. for the convenience of those doing research. (Hope you don't mind that I passed that along, Adith!!) I think this is a great thing and only wish I lived closer so I could help out! Address: Wirt County Historical Society, P.O. Box 891, Elizabeth, WV 26143 Gloria

    3. Wirt County Journal March 31, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wire County Journal files August 13, 1920 Ivan Scraps Wade Snyder, who has been working in Ohio, paid home folks a short visit recently. Ivan Owens took his auto to Parkersburg last week to have it repaired. G. A. Wilson, lockmaster at Lock 5, was a business visitor at Palestine last Saturday. Groundhogs are plentiful in our section. If you want a good feed come around. Olympia Notes Dry weather has been hard on corn and "spuds." Pribble Bros. have completed laying water lines from Faree farm to L. O. Kelly farm on Straight Creek and Superintendent Fox made a hurried trip to Parkersburg Friday last for "fittings." Jasper Haught has treated himself to a brand new Ford auto. Jim Kelly is off duty on account of getting some fingers badly cut with a cross cut saw. W. E. Pribble who was wounded in action in France has been awarded $80 per month compensation. Sam D. Hays, a good citizen of Macfarlan and handy all around man, installed a new engine and power water pump for Leviathan Oil Co. last week. Marriage Announcement We acknowledge receipt of the following marriage announcement. One of the contracting parties, Mr. Dawson, being formerly a Wirt County boy and has many former friends in this county who will be pleased to hear of his marriage. Mrs. Ella T. Stutler announces the marriage of her daughter, Tessie, to Mr. H. Frank Dawson, Monday, the second of August, nineteen hundred and twenty, Washington, D.C. at home after the first of October, Caracus, Venezuela, South America. Lucille Items We believe all the youths of our "burg" have whooping cough or expect to have. The writer counted 100 stacks of hay from Lucille to Roane County line with barns well filled and about 25 stacks yet to cut. The floor of the Lucille bridge has been repaired. The D. T. Dye oil well is down about 1,825 feet and no oil in sight yet. The poultry culling demonstration was held at Mr. F. F. Daniell's home. On account of being cream day at Reedy several of us did not get to attend. The report by telegram is that Gay Thomas, son of Evan Thomas of Zackville, was drowned in the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania on last Sunday, August 8. June 27, 1958 Aluminum Factory Leaders Express Interest in Elizabeth Speaking before a crowd of approximately 100 persons in the new Wirt High Vocational Building on Tuesday night, Lloyd Cook, president of Ravens Metals, Inc., a Parkersburg industrial firm specializing in aluminum products and other metals works, described a history of the growth of the aluminum industry in brief form, telling of its main start in 1942, and zooming to its present day major level. He expressed definite predictions for an even greater growth in the future. The speaker also described the organization, struggles and present status of Ravens Metals, now near the end of its second year in business. The firm is owned by stockholders primarily of the Parkersburg area of the Ohio Valley. Some local persons attending Tuesday's meeting may have come away disappointed that no announcement was made that a factory would be started here. That was not the purpose of the meeting. It was primarily to hear a discussion of some of the things that may eventually lead to such action. BOY BORN TO CUTLIPS Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Cutlip of 3102 10th Ave., Vienna, W.Va., on Saturday, June 14,1958, a baby boy, weighting 6 lbs., 15 oz., and named Jeffrey Dean Cutlip. The mother was the former Miss Edna Hickman. Officials in Charleston issued warnings early this week that there would be no time extension granted this year. The license bureau was some 32,000 plates behind schedule, but expected to be about even by this weekend, by working five extra hours this Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Monroe Looks For Fun as Festival 'Belle' Mrs. G. R. (Frances) Monroe, Route 1, Creston, will represent Wirt County at one of West Virginia's most important annual meetings next week - the West Virginia Folk Festival at Glenville State College July 4-5. As he recognized what it was, stopped, backed the front wheel across the rattler's body, got out and found a club and killed it. It measured 42 inches in length. He said he thought he had seen another rattler a few days before, but got away. 3. Is that "Saint" or Straight? And is it the Belt Cemetery which is on the Wirt County webpage? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 05, 1999 5:35 PM Subject: [WVWIRT-L] St. Creek > Does anyone know where St. Creek would be located? 3. We learn from our mistakes and being dense, it is also HOW I learned (the every reocurring post of Congress charging for long distance internet service). I just learned of the site this week. The first site URL I had was in numbers ( http://32.96.111.13/ ) and then was changed http://www3.familysearch.org/ but apparently http://www.familysearch.org/ also works. (And as I just checked all three URLs bring up the home page). Just remember, it is a test/beta site. I checked again at the LDS media release site and no change from the previous release: http://www.lds.org/en/4_News_Update/News_Update-Current.html So if someone is concerned, they can check there for updates. And I am certain that if they do restrict acccess or shut down the site, it should be posted there as well. Still seeking Cheatham, Monroe (both lines), Arnold, Ledsome, Lockhart and others..... 3. mm and fellow listers, I believe I am the one that posted the original message and I am certainly not taking your post as an attack. However, I would like to say that I accessed this sight the first night it was announced to be online and again, the next night. I had no trouble. When I rec'd the message that I forwarded yesterday, I went to the sight and all I got was some kind of foreign computer language. I came to the conclusion, in hindsight perhaps a faulty conclusion, that the sight was no longer available. That is what I based my forwarding of the message on. Perhaps I didn't try as hard as I could have to verify the validity of the message. For the record, I always check any type of virus warnings before sending them on too. My apologies. 3. This is a follow up comment to my previous response. And it is not meant to be an attack on the person who made the first post. When I come across such postings, I find it best to try to confirm the information before forwarding it on. As any of you that have received and 'virus alerts' are well aware, not all postings, well intended as they might be, are necessarily correct. Some are even based on a hoax. As I presume most here, I belong to other 'groups' as well as my own. And before I pass along any information, I try to establish it correctness and source. I went to the site (apparently there are at least two 'prefixes' www. www3.). It was open. There was no word of it being closed or restricted. I then went to the LDS official website where I obtained the press release. I am still trying to learn of a source that will provide more current/immediate information. I also contacted the person responsible for the local LDS FHC in my area (I am not Mormon) who heard there were problems (she heard the first day, the site had over 200,000 hits) but not anything indicating it was being closed or restricted to selected users only. I can only say this as speculation, but this is a beta (test) site. And I would think that a large part of that would be trying to determine the amount of traffic the site will have to handle. If this is correct, then such a posting would have a 'negative' affect on the test phase. If the site 'crashes' that is part of the test. It would be my belief that eventually this will be the most hit upon site on the web surpassing even Victoria's Secrets.... Happy Hunting, H.
