Joanne, Thank you for responding. I will check on Mercer Co. PA. Any lead, right now, is like gold. As far as Pres. Buchanan--He was never married and only had one daughter (illigitamate, of course). She died in her early 30's and is buried up around Akron, OH. In my searching, I have found pieces on the Buchanan estate scam, I don't know if this is what they are referring to or not. As far as I can tell, it has not been settled. Some even believe it not to be true. So.......................Again thank you very much. Good Luck in your searching!!!!!! Though I have no Buchanans there were many in the Mercer Co. PA area. Years ago I remember an article on how there was a problem with President James Buchanan's estate and Buchanan descendants. Is this legal battle still going on? Joanne

Jennifer, The ones that I remember were in Guernsey County, OH. I am a Buchanan, but have not seen any relatives on my father's side for years. The ones I do remember have all passed away. Jacob James Newman Buchanan was my ggrandfather. He was originally from WV. He moved all over and then settled in Guernsey county to farm about 1950. In an article in the newspaper he spoke of his grandfather as being a Justice of the Peace near West Union, West Virginia. He practiced until he passed away at 106 and I believe(but not sure) that his name was William. Also I believe that Jacob's father's name was Elias. (again, I am not sure) I am searching for any and all clues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. KIM
Whereabouts are these Buchanans? My aunt, who was originally from Parkersburg in Wood County, married a Buchanan. They now live in Charleston (Kanawha County). I'm not sure where he hailed from originally, but I can ask if you like. What Buchanan line are you researching? Jennifer Kim Ford wrote: > > Hello, > > I am new to the list. Hello, Well, I attended the Historical Society meeting last night. Pretty interesting, met several well versed people and learned some things too! Can't beat that! There was one thing I forgot to ask while there and I'll put it to the list instead. If I wanted to see if a relative belonged to a lodge or affiliated organization how would I do that? Would there be any records of it? Thanks for your time. Floa Swisher

Thanks to everyone who helped me with my answer to "When and Where" the historical society will meet! I think it's an idea way past due.....but, TRULY it's better late than NEVER! I've just been doing genealogy about 1 1/2 years and have been to the courthouse a few times looking for SWISHER information. They NEEEED those old books taken care of before it's too late!!!! At this time the clerks will not make copies from any of the old string bound books because they are so fragile. Something else I'd like to share...... While there recently, (after poking in corners of dusty stuff) I found a copied version of the string bound Fiduciary Record Book #2! Someone had apparently copied it years ago. So if anyone else has anything from that book they need a copy of it can be done from that copied version! It was a BIG find for me as I found records from both of the estate settlements of my husband's gg grandfathers! Tooooo cool! Thanks again Floa Swisher http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/7741
