Wirt County Journal April 14, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files September 3, 1920 School Items Miss Mazie Snyder left Wednesday morning to take up her school in Kanawha County next Monday. The local school will begin next Monday, Sept. 6, and the outlook is that there will be a full enrollment both in grades and high school. Oil Items Well no. 1 A. E. Buck Farm, Newark, was drilled in last week and a duster. Raymond Kidder left the first of this week to work in the Mexican Oil Fields. W. C. Clinton arrived home the latter part of last week from Tampico, Mexico, where he has been working in the oil field for the past several months. Neal O. Gibson, the fifteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Gibson of Vitrdite above Parkersburg, was drowned in the Ohio River last Sunday while in bathing. Everette Somerville of Reedy District was transacting business and visiting in Elizabeth Saturday. Harvey Wilson returned Wednesday morning from a several week visit at Akron, O. July 11, 1958 L-K Nursery To Be Biggest in United States Lakin Burr, superintendent of the big new Little Kanawha Nursery now being established at Newark, re-emphasized the fact that the soon-to-established Holly Gardens will be "one of the showplaces of the United States." To illustrate his statement, he said there is one in New Jersey, which annually attracts approximately 30,000 visitors. "The one to be established here in Wirt County will be larger than that one." He told the group of 25 persons at the Lions Club meeting Monday evening. Mr. Burr stressed the need for improvement of a section of secondary road leading from Beulah Hill to the former Morrison Farm on the Little Kanawha River below Camp Barbe. Jack and family and another brother, L.C. Whitehair, were here for the holiday weekend. CELEBRATES 77Th BIRTHDAY On Sunday, June 22, several relatives gathered at the home of CJ. Jones, Rt. 2, City. Upon his return from Sunday School at the noon hour, a delicious birthday dinner was given in his honor, it being his 77th birthday. Following the noon meal, those present enjoyed eating homemade ice cream and watermelon. GUESTS OF MOREHEADS Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Kilburn and son Arlyn, almost 2, of Lebanon, O., were here for the Fourth of July weekend, guests of Mrs. (Jean) Kilburn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. (Willie) Morehead of Limestone Hill. Wirt County Journal April 14, 1999 Obituaries Pearl T. Crew Pearl T. "Tip" Crew, 84, of Pennsboro, died April 8 at Parkersburg. She was born on Feb. 16, 1915, at Slate in Wood County. She was a homemaker, former president of the ministers' wives organization of three districts, Bluefield, Weston and Parkersburg, worked as a teacher trainer for both the district and annual conference of the United Methodist Church of Vacation Church School Leaders. She was a youth camp dietician for 10 years and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Pennsboro, where she was active in the choir and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 26 of Pennsboro and the senior citizens. She is survived by her caregiver, the Rev. Gene Kerby of Pennsboro; her "adopted" grandchildren, Randy Kerby of Pennsboro, Sharlene Bailey of Harrogat, Tenn., and Darlene Phillips of Vienna; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Alma L. Clegg Tippens; and her husband, the Rev. Noble Crew. Services were held April 12 at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with the Rev. Kermit Poling officiating. Burial was in Merrill's Chapel Cemetery near Elizabeth. Sylvia G. Criss Sylvia G. Criss, 86, of Vienna, died April 3 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Munday, Wirt County, a daughter of the late Aaron and Mahalia Wyers Phillips. She was a homemaker and a Protestant. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William O. Criss; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie Boice and Anna Halbert; and one brother, John Phillips. Services were held April 7 at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Jay Hubbard officiating. Burial was in Big Bend Cemetery, Calhoun County. Mildred Douglas Mildred Evelyn Cline Douglas, 94, of Rt. 1, Elizabeth, died April 8 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born June 18, 1904, in Wirt County, a daughter of the late Albert and Sarah Etta Jacobs Cline. She was a 1924 Elizabeth High School graduate and a 1927 Glenville State Normal School (Glenville State College) graduate. She retired in 1967 after more than 35 years as an educator and principal in various schools within the Wirt County school system. She was a 75-year member of the Rebekah Lodge and a long-time member of the Wirt County Farm Bureau and the Wirt County Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the board of directors of the Farmer's Home Administration and a member of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church. She was a lifelong Wirt County resident and an avid domino player. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Helen Douglas of Elizabeth and Martha Lou Deel of Milton; one son-in-law, Dr. William S. Deel of Milton; one brother, Charles Cline of Elizabeth; two sisters, Leah Cline and Phyllis Gant of Parkersburg; two granddaughters, Sarah Forster and her husband Kevin and Susan Barrett, both of San Francisco, Calif.; several nieces and nephews and a host of former students. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Ivel Douglas, in 1981; one brother, William Cline; and one sister, Anna Scott. Services were held April 11 at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Revs. Robert Stanley and Charles R. Murray officiating. Burial followed in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Elizabeth. Memorials may be made to the Wirt County Scholarship Fund, c/o Busch Funeral Home, P.O. Box 43, Elizabeth, W.Va. 26143. Naomi M. Kirschner Naomi Mildred Kirschner, 77, of Greensburg, Ind., died April 9. She was born April 27, 1921, in Elizabeth, a daughter of the late Berton and Rosa Lea Adams Robinson. She was retired from Sherwin-Williams as assistant manager, had worked at Murphy's, Sears, Sibbitt-Mann and Decatur County National Bank. She was affiliated with the Church of Christ in Greensburg, Ind. She was a 1938 graduate of Wirt County High School. She was a member of Decatur County senior citizens, Decatur County Community Artists, former member Decatur County YMCA Camera Club, Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of the Year in 1992, former member of Fugit Township Homemakers Club, former officer of Decatur County Home Extension Club. She is survived by two daughters, Harriett F. Fisher of Greensburg, Ind., and Alice L. Nuhring of Batesville, Ind.; three sisters, Wynema LeMasters of Greensburg, Margaret Robinson Smith of Ohio and Zetta Mae Robinson Doty of Florida; four grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A. Kirschner, in 1993; four brothers, Elvin and Orley Robinson, Harold Robinson, George Robinson; one sister, Heloise Robinson Higgins; and one foster son, Carl T. Jackson. Funeral services were held April 11 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg, Ind., with Maurice Scales officiating. Burial was in Kingston Cemetery.
