He was born August 24, 1933, in Indiana, Pa., a son of the late Merle J. and Ruth Putt Adams. He was a retired Local 132 operating engineer and an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Margery Somerville Adams; three daughters, Rose Ann and Dawn of Whipple and Sharon and Dennis of Whipple; three granddaughters, Vicki and Hannah of Whipple and Elizabeth of Palestine; three stepgrandchildren, Jason, Mark and Missy of Marietta; mother-in-law, Mildred Somerville of Palestine; three brothers; and five sisters. He was preceded in death by two brothers; and his father-in-law, Charles H. Somerville. Services were held May l at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Marilyn Schroeder officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Cemetery. Robert A. Hathaway Robert A. Hathaway, 63, of Grantsville, died at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was horn in Calhoun County, a son of Mr. Eulanee Stump Hathaway of Grantsville and the late Orvan Todd Hathaway. He is survived by his mother; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Carlton and Bonita Hathaway of Barlow, David and Lorene Hathaway of Elkview, Wes and Ethel Hathaway of Elizabeth, Ernest arid Carol Hathaway of Vienna; and one sister,. Loretta Hathaway of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard W. Hathaway. Services were held May 4 at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with the Rev. Robert Nicholas, the Rev. Mike Worf and the Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery. Inez R. Postlewait Inez R. Postlewait, 75, of Brooklyn Court, Parkersburg, died April 27 at her residence. She was born in Wirt County, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary Adams Rothwell. She attended the First Baptist Church, Parkersburg, and was employed as a secretary-treasurer for Blair Electrical Contractors for many years. More recently, she worked for the Philip R. Postlewait Jr. CPA firm. She is survived by one son, Philip R. Postlewait Jr. of Parkersburg; one daughter, Linda L. Schwartz of McMurray Pa.; two grandchildren, Daniel W, Schwartz of Washington, Pa., and Lynnette Y. Schwartz of Oxford, Miss.; one sister Betty Freed of Parkersburg; and one brother, Leslie Rothwell of Vienna. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip R. Postlewait; and one sister, Mollie Dulaney. Services were held May 1 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Joel Garrett officiating. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Mr. Simpson, our county agent, gave a poultry calling demonstration at S. M. Thompson's lately. A sad accident, we recorded the death of David G. Fleak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fleak. The boy who was less than 15 years old was working for the R.R. Company in Fairmont. He was on the truck and trying to keep out of the way of an engine, stepped in front of another and was run over. A little late, but we are glad to report the marriage of one of our brightest school teachers. Mr. Floyd Gates to Miss Smith of Jackson County. May they live long and prosper. Local & Personal Jas. L. Smith represented this county at the meeting of the state Democratic committee on last Saturday. A. Grable and Co. are taking options for coal territory near Elizabeth; if a sufficient acreage can be options this territory will be tested for deep coal. L. P. Thorn has sold two new overland cars recently, one to Dr. Conley, the other to A. D. Mason. R. C. Cox came into our office on Wednesday with an extra coat of smiles on his face, the cause, we soon found to be the arrival, that morning, of a fine baby girl at his home. J. W. Bailers with grandson, Ralph B. Rather, transacted business in Elizabeth on last Saturday. E. A. Maddox, a special agent for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, was in Elizabeth Monday and says that he is in the position to write a "First Class" Insurance Policy. Mr. and Mrs. Earl N. Bodice of Route 3 were pleasant callers at the Journal office on Tuesday, while in town attending court. O. R. King, one of Tucker District's good citizens, was a pleasant visitor at the Journal office on Tuesday while in town attending court. August 1, 1958 Ravens-Metal Firm Is Making Plans To Locate Here Venture hinges on sale of stock As late as Wednesday night of this week, officials of Ravens-Metal Products, Inc., Parkersburg, were still making tentative plans for a metal fabricating plant at Elizabeth, as expressed at a public meeting at Wirt County High School and attended by approximately 100 local citizens. Raising of necessary capital by the sale of stock in both Ravens-Metal and Wirt County Industries remained the main and deciding factor. Both R-M and Wirt Industries personnel took part in explaining the need of selling approximately $80,000 worth of stock in Ravens-Metal to raise working capital, and approximately $20,000 to $25,000 additional stock in Wirt County Industries to assist in the move of the plant in Elizabeth and for plant site development and building. Palestine-Odaville Road Project Gets Approval James H. Roberts, City, Chairman of the Wirt County Republican Executive Committee, last week received a letter and a memorandum from Patrick C. Granny, State Road Commissioner, Charleston, containing news of pending projects of interest in two different sections of Wirt County. The memorandum, dated July 24, pertains to Project S 209 (4), Wirt County, bridge over Little Kanawha River at Creston. The commissioner wrote: "Bridge is now under design by Harrington and Cortelyou of Kansas City. It is expected the bridge plans will be complete sometime this fall.. ..and "Beginning at junction with U.S. Route 21, the state has programmed with the Bureau of Public Roads the 5.3 mile section extending to within one mile section extending to within one half mile of the Jackson-Wirt County line.. ..and "Beginning at a point one half mile west of the Jackson-Wirt County line. ..and "The remaining section of the route, beginning at a point one half mile east of the Jackson-Wirt County line..." Eight Receive 4-H Pins at Camp Eight Wirt County 4-H Club members last Friday night received the highest honor on the county level in the 4-H program when they were awarded their 4-H pins as one of the highlights of the closing program of the 1958 camp. Receiving pins signifying several years of active 4-H work, and out-sting qualities of character and leadership, were: Ann Doty, Patricia Lou Sams, Barbara Whited, Priscilla Roberts, Sandra Mace, James Lenn Bailey, Barbara Bailey and Ruth Justice. Miss Townsend Breaks Leg Skating Miss Sharon Townsend, 13, of Palestine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Townsend, suffered a broken leg Thursday night, July 17, on the opening night of the skating rink in Elizabeth. She was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, where she remained a patient for more than a week, returning home last Friday.

Wirt County Journal April 28, 1999 Obituaries Charles C. Scott Charles C. Scott, 84, of Mineral Wells, died April 20 at his residence. He was born May 10, 1914, in Marion County, Ohio, a son of the late Issacc and Otie Davis Scott. He worked at Fairmont Foods for 19 years and also at Borg-Warner for 19 years. He owned and operated Scott Field, Parkersburg, and also Scott Mobile Home Park of Mineral Wells. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Mineral Wells, VFW Post 1212, Mineral Wells, and was a World War II Naval veteran. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ada Presley Scott; two sons, Bob Scott and his wife Lori of Mineral Wells and Mike Scott and his wife Melissa of Elizabeth; one daughter, Becky Wilson and her husband Roger of Parkersburg; one brother, Carl Scott of Mineral Wells; four grandsons, Bobby Scott of Gauley Bridge, Matt and Mike Wilson of Parkersburg and Josh Scott of Florida; one stepgranddaughter, Miranda McCroskey of Elizabeth; and one greatgrandson, Logan Scott of Gauley Bridge. Wirt County Journal April 21, 1999 Obituaries Edith N. Dulaney Edith N. Dulaney, 78, of Terra Alta, died April 16 at Preston Memorial Hospital. She was born July 14, 1920, in Wirt County, a daughter of Bert W. and Sophia Viola Headley Foutty. She was a graduate of Cairo High School, was a United Methodist by faith and was a former employee of Lawson's, where she was a clerk. She is survived by one daughter, Suellen Palumbo of Stow, Ohio; one son, Steven Dulaney of Bellaire, Ohio; two brothers, Bert Lathrop Foutty of Washington and Andrew Foutty of Vienna, three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell B. Dulaney, whom she married in December 1939; and one sister, Ruby Beha. The body will be cremated. There were no services. Arrangements handled by Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Wallace Rathbone Wallace F. Rathbone, 78, of Palestine, died April 16 at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division. He was born March 26, 1921, in Wirt County, a son of the late Vivian R. and Icie Williamson Rathbone. He was a 1941 graduate of Wirt County High School and a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from O. Ames Company as a laborer with more than 38 years of service. He attended the Newark House of Prayer. He is survived by two sisters, Donna Cox of Chesapeake and Betty Chalfant of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Evans Rathbone, in 1993; and three brothers, Marlin E. Rathbone, Robert Rathbone and Glenwood B. Rathbone. Services were held April 20 at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Raymond D. Ray officiating. Burial was in Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, where military graveside honors were rendered by American Legion Post 55 of Elizabeth. Frances V. Rose Frances V. Rose, 65, of Munday, died April 17 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Clay County, a daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy Conley Boggs. She was a member of Bell Chapel United Methodist Church and recently retired as a supervisor at Wirt Inflatable Specialists in Elizabeth after more than 18 years service. She enjoyed farming and raising flowers. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Alfred "Buck" Rose; one son, Alfred "Bucky" Rose Jr. of Munday; two daughters, Glenna Hoskins of Arnoldsburg and Brenda Rose of Munday; one brother, Dennis Boggs of Rittman, Ohio; two sisters, Pauline Myers of Elkview and Goldie Mae McIntyre of Uler, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Ryka Mangus of Munday and Jeffrey Hoskins of Arnoldsburg. Thank you Betty for supplying the name of the cemetary on Crane's Nest Run. And thank you for letting me know my postings have helped. This is why l do this. Of course l do have some family in each of the cemetaries l do, as well as the marriages. <G> Alot of people are unable to have access to info from different areas, and l have found alot of the websites don't supply enough info. This is especially important to those who are just starting genealogy of their family. Of course you can't solely depend on the internet, but it is essential to many. I know alot of people who are homebound and are unable to go out to research. One name, one date or one place can open a whole new line of family. I wasn't sure how the lists would feel, about putting the info out, but no one has complained, so l guess, it's okay. <G> My purpose is, solely to help others as l do my own research. I'm another one that is thrilled that Barbara has done such a wonderful job of gathering and sharing this information. It's been a big help in updating my family records. Re: "This cemetery is not named. Grace Road (Off Rt.14) is the last road on the right before entering Reedy, Wv. Then take a right onto Crane's Nest Run." My family has always referred to this cemetery as the "Fox Cemetery" . (My aunt, Evelyn Dotson Newlon, was buried there in 1995). Her husband, Jarrett "Jerry" Newlon descends from the Foxes, and I "think" this cemetery is located on (or at least near) his farm. His parents are Ethel and George "Bash" Newlon also buried there.
