    1. [WVWIRT-L] Gates Ridge School
    2. Ed Lloyd & Family
    3. Just received some old photographs that my brother-in-law had. (I shall be spending months scanning!) One is of my husband's grandfather, Cromer ARCHER, and Gates Ridge School. The date is Dec. 17, 1914. Is this in Wirt County? I know the teaching certificate of his I have has him in Wirt Co. for the 1915-16 year and Jackson County for 1916-17. Unfortunately there are no names on this photo. But its still a great photo. In another school photo in this box is an unnamed school. It says Leonard DALY & first school. Perhaps Mr. Daly was a friend (or classmate) of Mr. Archer and also taught at a school in the area. Does Wirt Co. have a historical society that might have a list of schools and teachers? Joanne

    1. [WVWIRT-L] Virginia / WV Bartons
    2. Hello everyone, I've been trying to trace back my Barton ancestors and have come upon some "mystery" Bartons. Does anyone have any information on the Bartons who where in what became West Virginia during the late 1700s & early 1800s? I came upon references to land grants in Sim's Index for William Barton in Harrison & Daniel Barton Monongalia counties in the 1780s. Also a marriage record in Harrison County in 1808 for Thomas Barton to Sally Drummond. Also Levi Barton being listed as a witness on an 1805 deed in Wood County. Also Margaret Barton in 1830 Wood County Census. Anyone have any ideas who these people are? Please reply directly to [email protected] (I've sent this to several counties as well as the Barton list so if some of you get duplicate copies, it's due to me). Thanks, Mark Moeser [email protected]

    1. [WVWIRT-L] Wirt County Journal, May 12, 1999, Remember When ...
    2. Mark/Paula
    3. Wirt County Journal May 12, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files October 8, 1920 If Harding Is Elected, Germany Wins (A front page story) Germany LOST the war, but if Harding is elected president and "straps the League of Nations covenant," Germany will WIN the peace. Losing the war means nothing to Germany, now, for that chapter is closed - the military issue between her and the allies was determined two years ago. But winning the peace means EVERYTHING to Germany - that is a matter of the present and the future. The Treaty of Peace which President Wilson signed at Paris and which was rejected by the Republican Senate was designed to make Germany play to the limit for her assault on civilization... .... It is the boast of the Harding managers that the majority of women voters are going to vote for Harding because they are opposed to the League of Nations. "We have 'told' the women of America the idea that the League of Nations means war; that it means that their sons will again be sent to the battlefields of Europe," is one way the Harding Get-the-Money boys express it.... .... If the women can be fooled into voting for Harding it will mean that they approve of his monstrous proposition to sue for a separate peace with Germany. Editor, Journal We are now at the eve of one of the most important elections since the formation of our government. Our voting population will this year be almost double what it has been before, due to the franchise of the women. This, of course, necessitates greater expense in the way of holding the election, but we venture the assertion that the women will vote right, and their vote will not be for sale like many men. Public Sale I will offer for sale at public auction at my residence in Tucker District, Wirt County, Thursday, October 14, 1920, the following described personal property to-wit: one roan horse six years old, general purpose; one gray mare, five years old; one fresh cow, five years old; four good yearling cattle; one sow with pigs at her side; one hog; one road wagon; one mowing machine; 20 head of sheep, good cuts; one hay rake. August 15, 1958 Wirt School Budget Is Cut 'Drastically' Wirt County Board of Education adopted an estimated budget of $265,997.27 for the 1958-59 school term at its legal meeting Tuesday evening of last week, August 5, attended by all board members. In presenting the budget to the board, Supt. Charles A. Cline said that many items had to be cut drastically or omitted altogether in order to bring expenditures within the estimated income. In other actions, the board employed the following personnel: Harry Righter, attendance director. Carmen P. Gibson, supervisor. Evelyn Cumberledge, secretary at Wirt County High School. Jamie Ruble, janitor at Elizabeth Grade School. Local and Personal Events of Interest BABY BOGGS HAS OPERATION Charles Boggs, 7 months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boggs of Akron, O., underwent surgery at children's hospital there last week. Mrs. Blanche Boggs (grandmother) of Creston and Mrs. Chester Boggs and children, Rt. 4, Elizabeth, were there Sunday to see the baby and family, and report that the lad, who was quite critical, is much better since the operation. ATTENDED LOCKHART REUNION, EAST LIVERPOOL Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Johnson and her mother, Mrs. Fannie West, of Rt. 1, City, Mrs. Roberta Bosley and son, Tommy, and Mike Morningstar, Parkersburg, spent last weekend at East Liverpool, O., where they attended the annual Lockhart family reunion on Sunday. Morgan-Stanley Nuptial Sunday Robert Stanley, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond R. Stanley, Rt. 4, City, who has spent the past 14 months with the U.S. Air Force in Alaska, arrived here last week for a 30-day leave, after which he is to be assigned at a base, Little Rock, Ark., until time for his discharge in May of 1960. Highlight of his current leave is this coming weekend when Bob is scheduled to take as his bride Miss Alice Faye Morgan, popular daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond F. Morgan, Rt. 3, City, the event being planned for 2 p.m. Aug. 17 in Elizabeth Baptist Church, with "open church" to be observed. Miss Morgan is a member of the graduating class of St. Joseph's School of Nursing.

Would like to hear an expression of opinion from tobacco growers. Local and Personal Mrs. W. T. Patterson, Mrs. F. H. Bell, a sister of Mr. F. H.
