Wirt County Journal May 19, 1999 Remember When... * From the Wirt County Journal files. October 15, 1920 My Friends After listening to bitter criticism of the Wilson policies, it is well to take a brief review of what they have accomplished. A partial list is sufficient to convince a reasonable man that his policies have not been far wrong. They have given us a development of the parcel post and rural free delivery, a good road bill, a secretary of labor in the cabinet, an amendment to the anti-trust act freeing labor and taking it from the central of dealers, the Smith-Lever bill for the improvement of agriculture, farm loan banks and postal savings banks, but the greatest of all is the Federal Reserve system which has effectively solved and silenced the money panics, which have heretofore engaged business in many life and death struggles. The bitterness against our great president is without foundation and has been engendered by envious men who are out of control of our government and are looking on with envious eyes. Notice Save Your Broom Corn On November 1, F. T. Newberry's Broom Shop at Palestine will resume operations. Price reasonable. Donations are still being received by Clair Townsend of Palestine. France's Corner I forgot last week that Mrs. Harris came on Wednesday and went back on Friday. On Saturday evening the Big Girls furnished a present for Joyce Winter Mills. It was an apron saying, "Kiss Me Now or Anytime." It was real cute. I am going to 4-H camp the 20th and Baptist camp the 27th. I'm sure I'm going to have fun at both of them. I got a letter from a girl in England, and her name is Janice. I wrote to this girl named Harriet, but she had too many Pen pals so she gave my letter to Janice. Janice Williamson is her whole name. Her father is manager of the Wholesale Fish Trade, and she lives in Hassocks, Sussex, England. She asked me if my father had a super fast car that she saw in American films, and I told her it could go 70 m.p.h. That's what Daddy said, if it was going down hill and you'd push down hard on the gas. I think that's pretty fast.
Many years ago, a four year old girl named Sandra Louise Doty, described what she thought a grandmother was like. She said "A grandmother is a lady, who has no children of her own, so she likes other people's little girls. A grandfather is a man grandmother. He goes for walks with the boys, and they talk about fishing and tractors and things like that. Grandma's don't have to do anything except be there. They're old, so they shouldn't play hard or run. It is enough if they drive us to the market where the pretend horse is and have lots of dimes ready. Or if they take us for walks, they should slow down past things like pretty leaves or caterpillars. They should never, ever say "Hurry up". "Usually, they are fat, but not too fat to tie kid's shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take off their teeth and gums. They don't have to be smart, only answer questions like why dogs hate cats and how come God isn't married. They don't talk baby talk like visitors do, because it is hard to understand. When they read to us, they don't skip or mind if it is the same story again". "Then she finished " Everybody should try to have (A grandmother), especially if you don't have television, because grandmas are the only grownups who have got time. Barb

Please may l have a copy of each one you mentioned? I have family among them. I would gladly compensate you for them. I know personally, that it takes alot of time and expense. Finally, Someone posted info on my family, thank you so much McTeer. I have been waiting so long. Somewhere in my papers I have a picture of Reubin George and a writeup on his family, mentioning a Joshua George...As I searched it points to the George family having been descended from Indian. Family tradition of my family stated that Elsie George m.. to Abram Kelley was descended from an Indian Princess. In the 1790 census for Rhode Island was listed Joshua George, Indian! Coincidence! I have no Idea. Can someone help with this family, anymore? My mother's family lived at Windy. Carl and Eva McCoy. Should you find any McCoys, that'd be wonderful. Carl taught at one of the schools there -- he was teaching when my mother graduated back in 1936, and was a school teacher when he and my grandmother married in the early 1900s.
