    2. Hello all, I live in Arizona now and to tell you that there is a difference in seasons would be an understatement. I constantly feel home sick for the tree and mountains of West Virginia. I hope to one day return to the place that stole my heart. Keith Phoenix, AZ

    3. Linda: I sure wish you could be here too! WV is beautiful this time of year! History abounds everywhere and the awe of it all overcomes me whenever I go to the county of my ancestors--Wirt. Of course, I live in Wood County, a long way from Wirt (about 20 minutes), but still I can't seem to find enough time to go there! Thank you for your wonderful and encouraging message. I'll keep your family in mind. Mary Linda Criss wrote: > I sure wish I could be there..... > > I'm in CA and visited Wirt and Wood Counties last July. The absence of pomp and ceremony of former inaugurals served to make the occasion more solemn and inspiring. Never has an inaugural address of a president been heard with such deep consideration. Although punctuated frequently with generous applause, there was no time when either the speaker or his audience were distracted from the main business of the hour. The use of a sound amplifier that carried President Harding's words to the extreme outskirts of the tremendous throng assembled in the Capitol plaza undoubtedly contributed to this attitude on the part of his auditors. 3. Is anyone researching the families of Barnes Smith and his son Silas L. Smith? I found that Silas L. Smith, age 19, of Ritchie Co., son of Barnes and Harriett Smith was married to Mary J. McCray, age 16, of Beaver Co., PA, daughter of D.H. and Elizabeth McCray on 11 Sept 1873. My questions: 1) Where did Silas L. and Mary J. Smith live after their marriage? Did they have any children? 2) Who are the parents of Barnes and Harriett Smith? Charlotte

    3. Wirt County Journal August 25, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files. March 4, 1921 Farm Bureau Notes The membership fee for the county in the state organization this year was $30. Does it pay for farmers to be organized? Talk about co-operation. W. N. Whited and some of the farmers from Two Run can show you what it means. Five farmers placed their order for seeds with the Farm Bureau. They saved at least $20 on their farm seeds but that was not all. When the seeds arrived one man got the orders for the whole community. Instead of five men with five horses taking five days to go to the store for seeds, one man with one team did it in one day. Yet some folks will tell you that there is nothing in farmers co-operating in a community farm club. General Election Results In Democratic Landslide Wirt Countians joined most of the rest of the Nation Tuesday as they registered a Democratic victory at the General Election polls. It was close voting here, however, with three county offices split between two Democrats and one Republican. Ray Palmer, recently retired school teacher and long-time Wirt County stock producer, won the race for House of Delegates over James H. Roberts, young Elizabeth merchant, by a close 23-vote majority. Even closer was the race for member of Wirt County Court, won by E.W. "Jake" Allman over Clyde Cale by 14 votes. C.C. Litton was the one Republican victor, being elected over Joe S. Parsons by 82 votes. Statewide, and mostly nationwide, it was a Democratic landslide, excelled in proportions only by the tremendous Democratic victories of the early and mid 1930s.
