Ken, On Thursday, July 18, 1889, more than 19" of rain fell on the heads of the Tucker Creek (Right Fork and Ballard Run). [The storm also fell on the Sandy side.] This was the great Morristown Flood. At that time Morristown was a growing and thriving community with a blacksmith shop, grist mill and two or three stores. Nearly all of the town and several houses were wiped out that night. The town never recovered. Loss of life was at least six with the Kiger family of five and Orville West's wife. The victims, I think, were all buried at Morristown Cemetery (Bethel Church). Some of this information came from the Wirt County History Book, and was written by Cora Quick, and some was from a paper written some years ago that should be transcribed and placed on the Wirt County Page. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kenneth Oates <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, 11 January, 2000 10:16 AM Subject: [WVWIRT] Sibble Cline & Austin J. Am searching for some information on James O. HICKMAN who married Rachel Ann "Annie" BARNHART on 15 August 1877, according to Wes Cochran's "Jackson County Marriages 1831-1879." The marriage info in the book also states that James Heekman (HICKMAN) is 33 from Wirt County & that R. A. BARNHART is 25 from Jackson County. In the 1880 Census for Jackson County there are three listed in the household of James O. HICKMAN: James O. WM 36 Ann WF 28 Sheridan WM 2 The census ages corollate with the ages listed on the marriage bond. Does anyone have a date of death for James O. HICKMAN? Or names of his parents? I believe that James O. HICKMAN died shortly after the 1880 census & that Rachel Ann "Annie" BARNHART married or "lived with" Fred Huffman until her death in 1917. I believe she had 1 child with James HICKMAN & about 6 with Fred HUFFMAN. Thank you in advance for any information you may have on James O. HICKMAN or his family. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

Wirt County Journal October 6, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files. April 29, 1921 Local and Personal Enoch Pickering, road patrolman of Clay District, has made some much needed improvements on the Standing Stone and Horse Run Road connecting the Burning Springs and Elizabeth District roads. Ronald B. Woodyard, who recently sold his paper, spent Sunday with home folks here. He expects to again go into the newspaper business somewhere in the northern section of the state. A Parkersburg company has recently taken up the Rathbone base at Palestine and expect to do some shallow and deep drilling in the near future. At the meeting of the town council held on Monday night of last week, John Jacobs, the former efficient and courteous Janitor at the Court House, was chosen Town Sergeant and Treasurer, and took up the duties of the office on Tuesday following. We have no doubt but that Mr. Jacobs will continue to make the same painstaking and courteous official he has been. He will now be found scattering smiles and good cheer over the streets instead of at the Court House. New Industry on the South Side, Frank B. Badger of Elizabeth Will Move Planing Mill To This City Information to the effect that Frank B. Badger of Elizabeth will move his planing mill from Wirt County to this city in the near future was made public today. Last spring Mr. Badger purchased a large tract of land in the south side industrial district near the Donovan Boiler Works, where the plant will be located. When the land was purchased last spring Mr. Badger planned to move his plant to this city, but at that time the plan was temporarily dropped. Plans for moving the mill have been completed, however, and the construction of a railroad siding will be commenced at once. The planing mill which is being moved here is one of the largest in this section and will give employment to 2O or more men. Saturday's Parkersburg Sentinel. Road Bill The Road Bill which is now being enacted into the road law of the state is a revision of the McClintic Bill introduced at the first session. The Lantz Bill, about which so many people have written me, was killed in the committee. The bill now pending before the House and which will be passed today (April 21) passed the Senate without a dissenting vote. It is more equitable to the people of Wirt County than anyone could have expected. Under this bill Wirt will begin simultaneously with each county working toward another county seat. The funds will be portioned according to the mileage of this road in each county. Prominent citizens of the county told me they would be willing to accept our appropriation according to the assessed value of the county; provided we would get some of these roads the first year. This system will give us twice as much road each year, because Wirt County's assessed valuation is far below that of the state per square mile. Very truly yours, Duncan Daugherty December 26, 1958 Fields Purchases Mellinger House Mr. and Mrs. Freddy Fields, who have resided in Elizabeth the past several months since he came here with the Soil Conservation Service last Saturday moved from the Roberts property at the junction of Routes 14 and 53, City, to the former Ross H. Mellinger house on Palestine Road, just a short distance out of the town limits. Bruce Sims to Be Palmer's Attache In 54th Legislature Ray R. Palmer, Rt. 1, Sandyville, informed the Journal the middle of this week that he will take as his attache in Charleston when the 54th West Virginia Legislature convenes next month, Bruce Sims, prominent Left Reedy farmer, and youngest brother of State Auditor Edgar B. Sims. Palmer was elected Wirt County a new member of the House of Delegates by a narrow margin over Republican Candidate James H. (Jim) Roberts, City, at the General Election early last month. $2,884 Receipts At '58 Grid Games Principal Sam Williams of Wirt County High School last week issued a statement showing receipts and disbursements for the 1958 football season, with a total of $4,530.89 in balance and receipts and disbursements of $3,330.05, leaving a balance brought forward on Dec. 15, 1958, of $1,200.84. Tree Planting Is No. 1 Objective At planning meetings held in Elizabeth last week by agricultural personnel tree planting was again listed as the Number One objective in the 1959 program. At a meeting Dec. 15 the Soil Conservation District plan of work for 1959 was tentatively outlined by Von Young, office manager for the County A.C.P. Committee; Freddie Fields, Soil Conservation Service; Ray Hall, Conservation aid; E. C. Andrick, Wirt County supervisor of the Little Kanawha Soil conservation District; and Ira Kimble, Wirt County Agricultural agent

Wirt County Journal September 29, 1999 Remember When ... * From the Wirt County Journal files April 22, 1921 Farm Bureau Notes A cow testing association has been organized recently in Wood County. Any Wirt County dairyman can join it. Anybody interested can communicate with me. We had a lively debate at Hickory Grove last Tuesday evening relating to farmers asking cash for produce instead of due bills when there is a balance left on produce. It was stated that poultry could be produced profitably but many farmers did not realize more because they could not get money on their eggs. It was held unfair that merchants got cash for the eggs and demanded that farmers deal out the price of the produce and thus giving him a chance to make on both produce and goods. The farmer said that this discouraged production instead of encouraging it. Quite a few circulars on culling poultry were sent out this week. Look them over and keep them until the culling season. We plan to heave an extension culling campaign this fall. The Wool Growers Association met Saturday, April 9. The same officers were held over for this year. The selling committee was given authority to sell with the State Federation of Farm Bureau if they deemed it advisable.
