Earlier this year, my mother received a letter from an older relative relaying some personal stories of Lulu Mae (Monroe) Arnold (1874-1918), w/o Wilbur Wirt Cheatham (1868-1944). One story involved Wilbur being shot during a robbery attempt at his store. Since no date was given nor name of the offender, I thought it would be quite a bit of work trying to learn any further details. However, as I went through this group's message archives, I found a posting of 18 Dec 1998 "Wirt County Journal, December 9, 1998, Courthouse History Wirt County Journal December 9, 1998." It was providing information about the Wirt County Courthouse fire of 15 May 1910. What was of interest to me was the report of the two prisioners being held at the time including "Ned Clark awaiting trial on a charge of shooting W.M. Cheatham." Hopefully this is a typo and should be W.W. Cheatham. So now I have a more definite time period for the incident. So where would I inquire as to further details (criminal court records, etc.)? According to the "family story", it was Lulu Mae who collared the young man: "At some point she asked the man why he had wanted to rob the store. He said he was sorry he had hurt Mr. Cheatham, had not intended to. He wanted to get out West and needed money. He had heard Mr. Cheatham always had a lot of money in the store....Whenever Daddy [W. Guy Cheatham] told this story, he would say, 'She wasn't afraid of the Devil himself!'". I will add my voice to those who much appreciate the postings of the "Journal" to this list. It is a great source if not for information then at least potential leads. H. Michael McTeer 29 Palms, CA

Eighty Years With Family Hard to believe that record established by Colored Woman has ever been equaled. Not long ago the New York Sun published the story of a New York family which had one cook for 6O years; but a family from Missouri comes forward with a record believed to be unrivaled in America - a cook who has been in service 80 years and all that time with one family, and is still on the job. The fortunate woman who has never known the troubles that attend the servant problem is Mrs. Leslie Marmaduke of 5242 Waterman Avenue, St. Louis, Mo., whose Negro maid, Mrs. Clara Elder, has been in her family since 1841 when Mrs. Marmaduke's father, Col. James Crawford, took her from a plantation in Virginia, where she was born, to his plantation near Eutaw, Ala., says the Kansas City Star. She lived with the other Negroes ,until 1841, when Col. Crawford was married and she was taken into the family mansion as Mrs. Crawford's maid. Band Boosters Club Undertakes Financial Projects; Ask Public Help The Wirt High Band Boosters Club met in a special session last Wednesday (Feb. 11) with Ray Whited, president, in charge. Several items of business were discussed. The main item was discussing means of raising enough money to finance a trip for the band to attend the State Band Festival in Huntington May 1 - 2. This will cost approximately $300. The band recently authorized the purchase of new band uniform replacements amounting to $381.60 from the C. E. Ward Co., New London, Ohio, with hopes they will be here in time for the proposed trip in the festival. Grade School Benefits By Local P.T.A. Projects The Elizabeth Elementary Parent Teacher Association met in regular session last Thursday evening with the president, Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, in charge of the business session. One of the yearly projects of this PTA is the awarding of a new library book to the grade with the most parents present at each meeting. School children are real enthusiastic about this and strive to get their parents to come so they may have the book. So far, this year books have been awarded as follows: Sept., 1st Grade; Oct., 4th; Nov., 1st (books for each of the first grade rooms); Dec., 2nd; Jan., 5th; and Feb., a tie between 2nd, and 5th Grades. Repairs are Made Other projects include the removal of the old flag pole, which was rusted at the base and in danger of falling. Warren Mills helped in this project with his truck and winch; also Chester Ludwig, Joe Cheuvront, Gerald Street, Louis Rollins, and others. It is being repaired and painted and will be replaced - this time on a hinge - type base in order to be lowered and raised for repairs and rope replacements without major difficulty. Mr. Ludwig and Mr. Cheuvront have been spending much time over the past several weeks repairing and painting swings and other playground equipment. They now await more material, which has been ordered, to get that project finished.

Hello again, Yesterday I asked if the library in Wirt Co had old newspapers on microfilm. Thanks for the responses I got to that. I called the library and wanted to share with you what I was told by the librarian. FYI: Name and phone # ::: Dora B. Woodyard Library 304 - 275 - 4295 The librarian informed me that they have "actual" newspapers back to the 1960's. They also have some older ones on microfische that go wayyy back. She could not tell me the exact dates without leaving the phone, so I didn't ask. Right now the reader does not print. Their hours vary when it comes to closing time but I asked what time they were open on Thursdays and she said 8 - 5. EIGHT! is GREAT! Hope this information helps someone. Seeking info on John & Jane Ballard or descendants who lived in & were buried in Wirt County after 1850. Any help would be appreciated. Caroline [email protected]
TO: The thoughtful person who takes time to type the Wirt Co Journal's obits and send them by e-mail to us, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!! I really appreciate YOU!! This last time, you included the obit of Johnnie CRISS, a man from my CRISS line. This info helped so much to fill in blanks, so just wanted to let you know that I compliment you and am thankful for you. Over a month ago, I wrote to the editor of the Journal asking for help in locating a newspaper story about the STEVENS family fire tragedies in Elizabeth and Creston, but so far I've not had an answer. My great grandparents, Henry Oliver STEVENS & Arthelia Alice CRISS were residents of both towns for many years, reared their children and are buried there. They lost two sons in a hotel fire and another son, who was mute and an invalid, in a home fire. I'd love to learn more about these tragic events. The first was about March 1917 in Creston and the home fire at Elizabeth was 1 May 1932. Any details are welcome....small or large!! Thanks again, Patti
Hi Floa, Yes the library in Elizabeth has old Wirt Co Journals on micro fische. I'm not sure of the dates-I know some are in the 1920's. I found some obituaries there. Liz ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Hello to all! This sure has been a quiet list lately. I'd like to ask if anyone knows if the Dora B. Woodyard library in Wirt County has any of the early newspapers on microfilm? Just curious. Thanks for your time Floa Swisher

This law does not apply to schools in independent districts, cities and incorporated towns. Farm Bureau Notes By the county agent William E. Simpson The state livestock specialist Mr. Creech, was in our county for a short time last week. The C.H. Bumgarner lot of cattle was weighed and it was found that they had made an average gain of 80 lbs. per head on pasture in two months. A community farm club was organized at Science Hill last Wednesday evening. Officers as follows: Carl McCoy, president; Walter West, vice-president; and John A. Davis, secretary. Letters have been sent out to many of the sheep men of the county asking if they wish to pool their Lambs. The plan adopted by the Wool Growers Association for each community to go together and list lambs to be taken up at the local scales where lambs are usually sold. When the results of the community pools are forwarded to the selling committee, Hugh Prather, Lee Smith, and Imory Griffin, they will get bids on the lambs and sell to the highest responsible, bidder. We believe that the buyer can pay a little more when he does not have the other to hunt up each individual sheep grower. This method of marketing ought to work to the advantage of both the buyer and producer. However, the success of such a movement will depend on a good number listing at once bids that would offer any advantage cannot be obtained unless a good amount of lambs in each community is listed. The big consideration in any business is the man you am dealing with. February 6, 1959 (Due to space only a portion of the front page story can be reprinted.) Industry Story Unfolds Since 1890 the population of Wirt County has dropped from over 10,000 to a little under 5,000 today. Hoping to stop this trend, Wirt County Industries, Inc., was formed three years ago with an initial capital of $25,000 subscribed to try to attract an industry to Wirt County and provide employment at home for a substantial number of young people who now have to leave the county to get work. Wirt County Industries bought 15 acres of the County Farm from the Wirt County Court. Some grading was done on this ground. The balance of the money was put on interest in the Wirt County Bank until an industry could be located to come here. It is quite a job to get a plant to locate in a new area. The competition is terrific. Every city and town in the country is trying to get a new industry. A great many prospects were investigated but none seemed feasible until we got in touch with Ravens Metal Products, Inc., an aluminum and metal fabricating company. This seems to be an ideal industry for Wirt County with the great future expansion of the aluminum industry and our location between the Kaiser and Olin Mathieson plants. This, plus the fact that the two men who started Ravens Metal were both former Kaiser employees and graduate engineers with a wide knowledge of the aluminum industry made it seem double attractive. Several Wirt County Industries stockholders meetings have been held. At all these meetings they have expressed unanimous approval of this program. Meetings almost without number have been held in all parts of the county to acquaint the people with what was going on. The trouble is to get enough of the right people to come to meetings. The board of directors, which includes Herbert Roberts, Louis Reed, Dr. R.W. Coplin, Brooks Sims, Eloise H. Sturm, Faustine Huffman and myself, plus former Director Ed Chambers, has worked hard and put in an awful lot of hours working this out. None of us have any regrets for the time and effort we have put into this, but we would like to bring it to a happy conclusion soon. We all have plenty to do trying to run our own businesses. To date, all but about $6,000 of the moneys for the first building has been raised. $22,500 of the working capital has been paid in and about $ 10,000 more pledged, which I am sure will be paid. What we ask is not a gift, but an investment which could bring you not only a substantial monetary return, but also the satisfaction of making an investment in the future betterment of Wirt County. Think it over. Sincerely, ROGER E. ROBERTS, President, Wirt County Industries, Inc.
