Doris, There are no coal mines in the vicinity of Burning Spring. But, there were oil wells and men came from all over to work in the oil field. Miner? Could it be that the census workers simply used this designation also for those who worked in the oil fields? Hi List, I am searching for any information concerning CHARLES LOUIS MONTANDON (possibly spelled MONTANDEN). Charles was born in Switzerland and emigrated to the USA in 1851. I know that he volunteered to serve in the Confederate Army in 1861 and went to Larkinsville, Alabama. The only other time that I found Charles was on the 1870 West Virginia Census. He is listed as C.L. Montanden, Wirt Co., W.V, pg 241, Burning Springs Township. Occupation: Miner Is there anyone out there who could point me in the right direction in finding any information on Charles. I know that there were coal mines in the area. Hello Betty, BINGO!!!!!! We have a match........ John Isaac Collins and Eda May Park's daughter Rachael Collins is our direct line. She married John Smith Drennen and they had 14 children and adopted the 15th. Who were your grandparents on this line? I have Hazel, Myrtle, Minerva and Elliot Martin listed as the children of James Otto and Delia Martin. Would you be willing to share info on these lines? I have all info regarding Rachel and John Smith Drennen if you are interested. Do you have the parents of John Isaac Collins or the parents of Eda May Parks? So happy to hear from you, Alice [email protected] wrote: > > Alice, > > BONNET, COLLINS,PARK and TANNER surnames are all included in my > family from Wirt Co., WV. Maybe we have some connections? Did you know that Sallie is a nickname for Sarah? My grandmother's first name was Sarah, but it doing genealogy and checking records I found her listed as Sallie and to top it off a postcard from her son in World War I is written to a Mrs Sally G------- Love your son.My husband's great-grandmother who's name was Sarah was listed alot as Sadie. My Sally was in Ohio and his Sadie was in FL. So maybe this will help. Nicknames crop up all the time. One of my great-grandmother's is listed as Elizabeth , Isoabel and just plain Bell on her tombstone! Then his great-grandmother Jurscia Elizabeth Barnes was always known by her grandchildern and great-grandchildren as Bessie This took me 15 years to find her and just did this month!!! So never rule out a nickname!!!! I think I have seen web sites that give nicknames for formal names but I don't remember where. I wonder what they will ever do with the nickname Bubba? I've been trying to find out about J. W. Bumgardner b. abt.1840/Wood Co., WV. It seems that he may have married two CRISS woman. Sarah M. Criss and Rosanne Criss-Kidd. Roseanne is the daughter of My Great Grandparents, William Criss b. 1818/OH and Elizabeth ? b.1829/OH. Roseanne is also sister to my Grandfather, John Criss b. 1872/Wirt Co., WV. I found Roseanne (listed as Anna) on the 1870 Wood Co., WV census report with her parents. William and Elizabeth list a child named Sarah on this 1870 census but her age is 6. I can't find any earlier information on the Criss family in OH or WV/VA. Finding an earlier census would sure help. There has to be a glitch here somewhere. I also believe that A Sallie Criss/Wirt or Wood Co., ties into the Bumgardner line someplace. I sure would like to find some Bumgardner cousins if possible. Does anyone know if J.W. Bumgardner ever fathered any children with either of these two women? Any help that you might be able to offer will be greatly appreciated. [email protected] A Wirt Co., researcher......

CUNNINGHAM: Henrietta Yeager Cunningham b. 1905/WV married my Arthur CRISS on July 22, 1942 in Wirt Co., WV. Their children were Gene, Phyllis, and Frank. I think that Henrietta's maiden name was Yeager but it looks as though she was married to a Cunningham man prior to my Uncle Arthur. Anyone know which Cunningham that she was married to? Are your Barnes any relation to Isreal Barnes and Jane Ann Ball. I have just found out my husband's great-grandmother Jursia Elizabeth Barnes is probably their daughter. She married Charles Ludell (Ludwill even Ludlow or some name close to that) Moss His father was an Elija (Elijah) Moss and his mother was a Mahala Edwards. The spelling of these names I got from their death certificates in Muskingum County, Ohio Norita Shepherd Moss [Original Message] > From: Jimmie Barnes <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 4/17/00 10:08:43 PM > Suct: Re: [WVWIRT] Victor Owens > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Norita Moss <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Monday, April 17, 2000 7:34 PM > Subject: Re: [WVWIRT] Victor Owens > > > > My uncle who served in WW I had been gassed <Snip> > I do remember reading that the Germans gassed > > many of the soldiers in the trenches they built in France.
