Thanks I've got a Jacob WALTERS in the 1840 census in Warren co, VA and Wirt county in the 1850 census The bureau of land management's website: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov has Jacob's son (probable, but would like proof) John getting a land patent per ScripWarrant Act of 1850- in 1854 - looks like the land patents that the vets from the War of 1812 didn't pick up were given out and John was on one for Coles county, Illinois. I haven't been able to find a will or probate in Coles for Jacob (he died in 1861 per his gravestone) - I was hoping he might have bought land and would have a will in Wirt listing his children would be awesome! lol is there an online website where deeds are listed? BLM doesn't have the 13 colonies on their website :-( and if Jacob was in Wirt, Wirt county in 1850 - would that have been Wood or Jackson county courthouse back then? thank you for all of your help!! Dateline September 9, 2013 Woodsfield Ohio. Cline Family to celebrate Heritage with inductions into Klein-Cline Lineage Society. The descendants of the Cline family from up and down the Ohio Valley will meet Sunday 2PM , September 15th in Woodsfield Ohio at the Library for inductions into the Klein-Cline Lineage Society. The Monroe County Ohio Genealogical Society sponsors the Clines as a Department of that organization and will perform the inductions along with 1st Families of Monroe County. The Clines can trace their lineage back to the 15th Century in the Alsace region of what today is France however, the Clines are Germanic in Origin. This Alsace region was in dispute for many years after the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire and during Martin Luther’s reformation, many of the German inhabitants of the area suffered persecution for their Lutheran beliefs, causing many of the inhabitants leave that area. In later years, many including the Kleins came to the United States. The original spelling of the name Klein was changed to Cline after immigration to the United States. Many of the Cline family descendants in the Ohio Valley can trace their ancestry to George and Sussanah Cline, of Monroe County and Washington Counties in Ohio. The results of Dna test have connected the Ohio Valley Clines with the branch of Clines living in Catawaba County North Carolina today. Research has connected the two lines of Clines and records indicate the origin of the break in the lines occurred with the migration of Clines from Pennsylvania into Western Virginia (Fort Henry) and then across the River into Ohio while the other branch moved to North Carolina. Membership in the Klein- Cline Lineage Society is open to anyone who can show they are descended from these Clines. With very few exceptions, the Clines on the West Virginia side of the River and the Ohio side are descended from these Clines with the oldest known progenitor being Pieter Klein (1575). Hello - Just discovered I had another question today. I found out one of my ancestors was born at Starvation Point. All I can seem to find via Google is that it is now the site of an ATV race. Are there still any homes up there? It is listed as a place residence where a Lulu Rockhold was born. Any idea why they call it Starvation Point? At least I have a place to go where I know someone lived when I visit Elizabeth. Thanks again, Catherine
Hello Harley - No. I have not read the book and would like to get it. Marie is the middle name of my great-grandmother, Dorthea Rockhold, so that is interesting too. I am going to take a trip to see that particular Rockhold Cemetery and just see where my ancestors lived in Wirt County and in Wood County too. Thank you so much! Oh, Wow. Thank you so much for all this research. I am going to look it over more in depth now. I know that a William Rockhold died of pneumonia at Spencer State Hospital and I was wondering if that might be him at all, though I don't think so if Ida was widowed before then. But it says he was divorced and the birth date would have been 1870, which doesn't fit. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1259575&Type=Death I wish I knew what he died of, so maybe he was not even in Wirt county when he did. I am going to be taking a trip to Elizabeth and Parkersburg and visit the cemeteries, courthouses, and libraries and see what else I can find out while there. Thank you so much! For as much as I looked at all this stuff. you'd think I'd been able to piece some of this together but so much of started to run together after a while. I will see if I can get that pension application possibly. Thanks again! I am form the Rockhold line through a maternal line. Have you read Marie Rockhold's book? The line is well documented. I believe they originated in Barbour County Viginia (WV) and came to Wirt CO in the early 1800's. The Rockhold Cemetery at Mingo Bottoms Golf Course contains some of the Rockhold Ancestors. The Rockholds and Roberts married. Would be glad to help where I can. Best, Harley Dakin 23803 Oxford Twp. Heritage is the defining elements of one’s life that tells who they are and how they should live. Heritage then is the profile of our values, priorities and beliefs and rules we are guided by in our daily lives. Our Heritage begins in the life experiences of our ancestors and we will pass them on to our descendents, long after we are gone. Collectively, the heritage of a society gives rise to its culture. Hi Catherine Here's what I found on this family Death - Ida Dawkins Rockhold, 23 January 1932, Wirt Co (http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=4230326&Type=Death) Marriage - Ida Dawkins, George Washington Rockhold, 19 January 1887 (http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=10738603&Type=Marriage) To avoid confusion (as there's another George W in this story) I'm going to refer to your George W as William/Willie. Much of this is guess work but it's based on the documentation I was able to find. William was listed as age 20 at time of marriage (1887), giving an approximate birth year of 1867. Checking the 1880 Wirt County census, I found a Willie Rockhold, age 13 living as a nephew in the household of Charles (age 32) & Mary J Rockhold. Charles & Mary have a son Otto who is 11. There are a number of Bell children living in the household as nieces & nephews. It's possible then that Mary Jane's maiden name was Bell. An entry on Find a Grave also indicates that her maiden name was Bell. (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=rockhold&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSs t=52&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=12412882&df=all&) I was not able to find any official documents to confirm this though. Checking the 1870 Wirt County census, I found a GC Rockhold, age 3 living in the household of G W Rockhold (age 30). Also in the household a C A (age 21), M J and Otto Rockhold. So it's seems that the GC on the 1870 census probably is the same individual as Willie on the 1880 census. Looks like George died sometime 1870-1871 as Mary filed for Civil War pension Sept 1871. There's a marriage record in 1878 for a Mary Rockhold (widow) and Charles A Rockhold. What's curious is that Otto & William both appear to be the sons of George & Mary on the 1870 census; however on the 1880 census, Otto is designed at their son while William is a nephew. I went to the 1860 census to see if I could connect GW (who would be 20) and Charles (11). Turns out they're living in the household of Hiet W Rockhold: Hiet 46, George W 20, Mary D 17, Alace J 14, Charles A 11, Jane Coe 50. I also found a marriage record for Hiatt Rockhold & Evaline Coe 10 January 1839, Wood County (http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=10740338&Type=Marriage) So based on all this, I would say that William is the son of George Washington Rockhold and Mary Jane Bell. George is the son of Hiatt Rockhold & Evaline Coe. Proving all this may or may not be possible. I believe there was a fire at the Wirt County Courthouse in the 1870-ish time frame which made it very difficult for people who were filing CW pension claims and needed official documents as proof. If you can get a copy of the pension file that Mary filed, it could confirm her maiden name & if William was their child. Hope this is helpful. Is anyone researching the Walters families that were in Wirt county in the early 1800s. some of them ended up in Coles county, IL I think I know who the Mr. & Mrs Peter Walters are, but John's family is tougher, I can't find a family with those children in the 1860 census that fits. any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Julie This retyped article was printed in the Coles County, Illinois, newspaper in April 1928. (first paragraph) Seventieth Anniversary Early in April, 1858, seventy years ago, three families moved from Wirt County, West Virginia, to now Ashmore township, Coles County - the families being Mr. and Mrs. Elisha COARTNEY and four children, Mason, Isaac, Irwin, and Samuel, Mr. and Mrs. Peter WALTERS and three children, Harriet, Sarah and Isaac, and Mr. and Mrs. John WALTERS and five children, George, Henry, Jacob, Thomas, and Jane. The three families, numbering 18 persons, left Wirt County, West Virginia, March 15, 1858, in two covered wagons. After reaching Columbus, O., the party stopped in that city over Saturday and Sunday and on Monday resumed their long, slow, tedious and tiresome journey for Coles County, Ill., where they intended to make their future home.
