    3. After visiting many cemeteries and noting the many unmarked graves i had an idea. Why not visit the court house and go throught the death records? I had already visited the local funeral home and was told that records before 1985 (maybe it was 1975) were very spotty and the information wasn't recorded in such a way that it would be easy to find all the people buried in one cemetery. Here's what i found, before about 1920 death records didn't ask for the final resting place of the deceased, but did record where a person died. A person could assume that in a small community the deceased would be buried in the local cemetery, but this isn't very reliable. For example, some people listed as living at Arcola actually lived at Hardwood, about two miles below Arcola, and according to my records are buried in the Adkisson Cemetery, about three miles above Arcola. So if i assumed they were buried at the Arcola cemetery i would have been very wrong. And if a person could have been buried at a cemetery five miles from where they lived i could draw a five mile circle around their house and come up with at least thirteen cemeteries. Another consideration is that in order to save time instead of giving the specific location where the person died the location was often simply listed as 'Webster county'. The records from abt 1920 to abt 1947 do ask for the final resting place of the deceased but many times instead of cemetery names just the name of the community where they were buried was listed, and many many names had no final resting place listed. The closer to 1940 you get the easier it gets to determine where people were buried. After abt 1948 to abt 1977 most of the deceased were listed with the specific cemetery where they were buried, but this doesn't take into account people who died outside the county and were brought back to Webster county to be buried. But even with these obstacles i went through and recorded everyone who was listed as having deceased or been buried in Marcus, Halo (the same community with different names) or Arcola between 1910 and 1977. i then cross checked this information with my transcription of the five cemeteries in these two communities and have a list of about twenty additional people that i believe are buried in the Arcola Cemetery with no markers and about ten people buried in Adkison cemetery with no markers. I have also been able to add additional information to the simple lists of the tombstones in these two cemeteries. My next step is to take the list to a couple of the older residents of these two communities to see if they can help verify that these people are actually buried in the above named cemeteries. when i'm done i hope to be able to erect some markers on the unmarked graves and to post the information to this list. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
