Kegley -published 1938 - pages 272 -273 -274 Part 1 Service Reciords -French & Indian War - Botetourt County, Virginia Botetourt Orders of Court: WILLIAM WARD served as a sergeant in the years 1756 & 1757 in DICKINSON'S COMPANY OF RANGERS. He was an inhabitant of South Carolina at the time that warrants for their services were obtained by the officers - certified to the register of the land office. WILLIAM WILSON allowed a warrant for land, having been a sergeant in the Cherokee Expedition under COL. WILLIAM BYRD. ZOPHER CARPENTER was a drummer in JOHN DICKENSON'S company of rangers. JAMES RALSTON, sergeant in same company. HUMPHREY MADISON, was ensign in 1756 on the frontier in Dickenson's company of rangers. FRANCES RILEY, deceased was soldier in Capt. WILLIAM PRESTON'S rangers in 1759. JAMES McGUIRE in Capt. CHRISTIAN'S company of Col. BYRD'S regiment of regulars, Second Virginia 1760. DAVID ROBINSON - Lieutenant of Rangers under Preston, July 1755 to June 1756 - then Lieu. with Dickenson's Ranngers, June 1757 to May 1759. COL. JOHN SMITH - Served as Captain in new line of 1760 under Col. Byrd. Warrent for 3,000 acres. Captain of rangers under Andrew Lewis, August 1755 to June 1756. His fort attacked by the French and Indians and he was taken prisoner to Canada but returned 1758. WILLIAM SKILLERN - ensign under Robert Breckenridge of Byrd's regiment who garrisoned Fort Chiswell 1761. WILLIAM WARD - Lieutenant, JOHN THOMPSON - second lieutenant. JAMES JOHNSTON - of Thogmorton's Regulars. ALEXANDER McDONALD - Capt. Preston's Rangers - discharged 1758. DR. THOMAS LLOYD - of Preston's Rangers, 1755, disbanded June 1756 - surgeon again under Preston, June 1757 to May 1759 - surgeon in same and other companies and attended to the wounded country people without fee or any gratuity - warrent for 200 acres had been given. WALTER STEWART - sergeant in First VA Regiment - quartermaster in Second VA Regiment.
