I have been working to try to get momentum for an organization called the Pioneer Family History Preservation Society Inc., a nonprofit corporation, to collect money to clean small, old neglected family cemeteries, among other preservation projects. I am aware of the problem. The first time I went into the cemetery called The Benjamin Hamrick Cemetery on the farm of Bill Triplett down the Bergoo road, his wife, Barbara, standing in the cemetery, could barely be seen. We have been having that cemetery cleaned at least once or twice a year. But it needs work on the stones and graves. We had work done on the Hamrick Cemetery atop Morton Hill in Webster Springs, but descendants of those buried there have done a fantastic job of cleaning it up in recent years. These mostly have involved the sons and daughters of Simpson and Attie Blankenship Hamrick such as Nancy Grimm, Paul, George and Gene Hamrick. Jamie Hamrick has been taking care of the lot of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. We have much more to do: The grave of James Dodrill, whom I believe to be the first Dodrill settler in Webster County, is neglected; its stone is on the ground. The stone of Adam G. "Squire" Adam Hamrick is on the ground, and it will take equipment to correct it. The cemetery on Dodrill Flats, up an incredibly winding, hazardous road from Bergoo, needs mowed a couple of times a year at least. We are working with a lawyer to try to get the Methodist Church to keep faith with Portia Hamrick's will by fixing the road to the Samp Hamrick Cemetery. Last year, we cleaned the cemetery of James Miller and Rebecca Dodrill Hamrick, in the woods below the Bergoo road. The Methodist Historical Society Inc., which accepted $50,000 from Portia Hamrick, has said repeatedly it has no responsibility for the road to its only destination ‹ the cemetery where Portia and members of her family are buried. So Portia's grave goes flower-less on Memorial Day because you can't get to it except in a four-wheel drive with a willingness to place your life at risk. I have lost my understanding as to what this church is responsible for. Period. Would the Webster Echo be willing to print your reports of the condition of these cemeteries to make the people of the county more conscious of the problem? Our largest problem has been to find someone in Webster County that we could pay to supervise the work. I have also promised to go to work on a map of these cemeteries. I was referred to the U.S. Geological Society maps but could not find the Gregory Cemetery above Barton as one example. I actually could find none.
