    1. [WVWEBSTE] WILLIAM ARTHUR
    2. Robert L. Lynch
    3. To Bill Barnette I am descended from William Arthur and Mary Friend. I have a book on the descendents of William Arthur written by Robert L. Arthur. His widow says there are errors in the book, but they never managed to update it. He lists Effie Arthur married to Felix Murphy, with 8 children. Arminta is not listed. He does say early Clay records are hard to read. William and Mary had 10 children: Friend Davisson Arthur b. 1805, William Randolph Arthur, b. 1807; Elizabeth Catherine Arthur, b. 1808, m. Richard Brooks Ware; Wilson Arthur, b. 1809; John Warwick Arthur, b. 1812, m. Sarah Given Lynch; Nathaniel C. Arthur b. 1815; Richard Anderson Arthur, b. 1817; James Arthur, b. 1819; Mary Arthur, b. 1825, m. Isaac Lynch; and Sarah Arthur, b. 1827, m. Adam Gregory Lynch. The Heritage of Webster County, 1994, has considerable information on the Arthur family. According to one daughter , William Arters came from Mifflin county, PA , and according to 2 sons he came from Bath County VA. Robert Arthur had heard from his grandfather that William came to WV with three of four brothers. Doug Arters noted that Richard and Margaret (Bowman ) Arters who were living in Lewistown, PA c1779 had a son William. He was trying to connect him with our William. Is this the Richard you have as Williams father? How did you make the connection? Hope this will be helpful Robert Lynch

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Webster Co., WV Phares
    2. Hi I may be new to the list -- but my postings are not. I see in the archives that Jim has listed everything he's found "out there". You're doing a great job of pulling things out of the woodwork. Even my posting on the Foster Co., ND board! That one was pretty obscure. My Phares line goes back to my "brick wall", John S. Phares b. 1819 Pendleton Co., (W)VA. No one among the Pendleton Co., Phares families seems to want to claim him. John was taken in and raised by Christian and Hannah (Spillman) Bickel from the time he was a young boy. He married Cynthia Woods b. 1824 Nicholas Co., (W)VA. She was the d/o Zachariah Woods and Mary McCourt. John and Cynthia were married 17 Oct 1839 in Braxton Co., (W)VA. They had six sons, all born in Braxton Co., (W)VA. Their names were: James S. H. Phares b. abt 1840 d. bef. Aug. 1874 m. Diannah Coger 15 Nov 1860 Webster Co., (W)VA Andrew W. Jackson Phares b. abt 1843 d. mid 1880's Webster Co. m. Mary A (?) John W. A. S. Phares b. abt 1852 m. Mary Martha Lough Benjamin L. M. Phares b. 16 Sep 1856 Jesse Godfred Hinkle Phares b. 13 Feb 1861 d. 2 May 1918 Lambert, Richland Co., MT m. 1st Celia McCann 20 Sep 1885 Upshur Co., WV 2nd Etta Hollen 26 Apr 1891 Upshur Co., WV. I am descended from John and Cynthia's eldest son, James. He was my gg-grandfather. Dick Phares and I have corresponded over the past several years and he cannot place us in his vast data base. We are not giving up, however. My cousins and I continue to beat the bushes looking for other descendants of this particular John S. Phares. Any and all help is welcomed and appreciated! 1. [WVWEBSTE] ARTHUR, FRIEND, BAXTER, STILTNER, CARPENTER, & WOODS
    2. Faith Blount
    3. Hi Lists! Been on vacation for a while, so I am trying to reply to all messages I received while away. Please be patient, it might take a while due to the amount of messages received. Here's an update on what I have: Just before I left, I received the death certificate info on my ggrandmother Pricey STILTNER Arthur Her parents according to the death certificate were: Jackson STILTNER and Martha WOODS. Pricey was married to Lee Anderson ARTHUR his mother was Mary Margaret Arthur, he must have been conceived out of wedlock and took on his mother's name. I have most of the Arthur's back to 1770; which include the names FRIEND & BAXTER. I am trying to figure out the father's name of Lee Anderson ARTHUR. I am also trying to figure out any information anyone might have on Pricey's parents: Jackson STILTNER and Martha WOODS. Lee and Pricey had 13 kids. (Or at least 10 - 3 from a later marriage of Lee's to an Amanda CARPENTER) I have most of the names and dates will provide if needed. If anyone has any info regarding these names it would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to share any info I have with other's also. Thanks, Faith blount@digital.net

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Wv Pioneers NEW List
    2. Patsy H Weikart
    3. There is a new list called WV Pioneers. We see it as supplementary to this list. This list is to promote the preservation and advancement of pioneer family history in an area of East Central West Virginia, including but not limited to Randolph, Webster, Braxton, Nicholas and Greenbrier counties. We also welcome participation from the settlers' sources in Virginia, particularly Prince William, Fauquier, Botetourt, Franklin, Montgomery, Culpeper, Rappahanock counties. The principal inter-related families include - but are not limited to - Ham(b)rick, Gregory, Dodrill, Riggleman, Miller, Mollohan, Cogar, Chapman. The three moderators represent all but a couple of these families. Allied families include - but are not limited to: Boggs, Conrad, Cowger, Swecker, Hogan, Hevener, Arthur, Rose, etc. We wanted a list more confined to West Virginia than, say, the Hamrick list so some people on this list don't think we dominate it and, at the same time, wanted to include a number of other, closely related West Virginia families. Also, we wanted a broader geographical sphere than, for example, Webster County alone, though we value that list too. For one thing, this should help reduce cross postings, which have drawn objections from some on the grounds it makes their heads spin. The list will require that the individual researcher cite sources in making postings. If the information is from personal knowledge, death records, birth records, census, published or original documents, military, tax lists, deeds, please say so. We hope we can encourage the sharing of such information -Tressie Nealy (TLNealy@aol.com), and Dan Hamrick (dhamrick@neo.rr.com) two genealogists with years of research and volumes of records, have agreed to help moderate the list and advance the cause of family research. Each of us plans to continue to take part in the individual lists. You must be a subscriber to post to this list. 1. [WVWEBSTE] Fire Harms National Archives Files
    2. Patsy H Weikart
    3. Please forgive the duplicate sending of this notice, if you are a member of several lists you will receive this several times. This is of importance to anyone doing genealogy research and could affect all of us who use these records or may need them in the future. Government Front Page News Source: Associated Press Published: 3/3/00 Author: DEB RIECHMANN For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Archivists are using hot air and blotting paper to salvage hundreds of thousands of pages of government records damaged in a fire at a National Archives storage center just outside Washington. Among them were veterans' records and papers connected to a lawsuit over mismanagement of American Indians' money. The fire occurred Tuesday at the Washington National Records Center in Suitland, Md., which stores more than 3.7 million cubic feet of records. Archives officials said 3,000 cubic feet of records were stored in areas where sprinklers activated, but fewer than 300 cubic feet -- approximately 700,000 pages -- were actually damaged or destroyed. The bulk of the records were from the Department of Veterans Affairs. ''These are inactive files of deceased veterans who previously made claims for benefits,'' said Robert Knode, records officer for the veterans benefits administration. ''Sometimes we recall these files when somebody wants a copy for genealogical or other purposes, but there should be only a minimal effect.'' Another 60 boxes of damaged records were involved in a lawsuit over brought by American Indians charging government mismanagement of a $500 million system of trust accounts for American Indians. The water damage to those records was just the latest problem with documents in the case; other Indian trust records have been inadvertently shredded or found dumped in a trash-strewn shed on a North Dakota reservation. Also damaged were records were from District of Columbia government offices, the Labor Department's Hour and Wage Division and the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. The patent and trademark records were scheduled for disposal. ''We regret the loss of a single page, but we're not sure yet what the loss is,'' said Gerald George, communications director for the archives. ''We have some record damage and we regret that, but on the other hand, our fire system contained the fire so that it didn't do widespread damage.'' Conservation work is under way. Warm, dry air is being blown into the storage stacks and blotting paper is being used to extract moisture from pages, said Susan Cooper, a spokeswoman for the archives. Drying chambers have been set up and refrigerated trucks are being used to store records that are very wet. ''They keep the records cold to prevent mildew from forming on them,'' she said.

    3. VA. Militia Pensioneers - Virginia Militia in the Revolution - compiled by J. T. McAllister page 54 -55 - Section Number 4 ARBOGAST, ADAM - Pocahontas County, 6 November 1832. - Born 1760 - Indian Spy in 1776 or 1777. Drafted and marched under Captain John McCoy and Lt. Joesph Gwin to West's Fort on West Fork of Monogahela, then down the river to Lowther's Fort, then lower yet to Nutter's Fort where he remained much of the three months. Then finally to Coontie's Fort where troops were called in consequence of the Indians killing a white woman while she was spreading hemp in a field. Volunteered 1778 as Indian Spy under same Captain and marched on to Warm Springs, whence he, together with George Hull, John Gum and Conrad Fleisher were ordered to Crabbottom to guard that locality and remained there the rest of his time. At another time he marched from his home (now Highland) across the Greenbrier River to head of Seneca in pursuit of Indians. Date not given (1781?) (posted by patsy)
