Description: A part of Virginia until the American Civil War, West Virginia was home to about 1.2 million people in 1910. This database is the second of three volumes covering the history of the state, originally published in 1913. Beginning with the earliest explorers to the region, it provides a detailed account of the state's development. Additionally, it contains biographical sketches of important residents. Of particular use to the researcher are these brief histories and genealogies. Names of ancestors and descendants are included in many entries, making this an invaluable tool for the researcher whose ancestors lived in West Virginia.
Hi, everyone, hope you don't mind but I have another person to add to your prayer list. It's my mom...you know i'm in Fairbanks, Alaska and I just got a call from my brother, my mom has had another stroke...she is in Northern Virginia. At this point, she is awake and is communicating...her speech is slurred some and she does have some loss of muscle control on her right side. .. this is not her first....she had one about 6 years ago....and the condition was the same...she rebounded and was doing fine......until today..... Right now, they are doing tests and they will have a better picture of exactly what the problem is and the solution when the results are in. In the meantime, can you add her to your prayers. I know she is in good hands and that God will provide for her....but it never hurts to have a little more help thank you so much joann
I am searching for information on the family of Robert Henry CLIFTON, Jr. b. abt 1891 in Webster County. At age 20, he married Martha Belle WILSON on 23 Dec. 1911 in Braxton County. Does anyone have any information on these families? Gail Phares Walkley
This has been updated on 25 April, 2000 - please check the Web Site - very informative for future research. The NARA proposal to revamp the system and fees for providing copies of Military Service Records, Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Files, and Pension Application Files has been published in the 25 April 2000 issue of the Federal Register. Public comment is invited and should be directed to: NARA Regulation Comment Desk 8601 Adelphi Road College Park, MD 20740-6001 Fax: 301 713-7270 The comment period closes on 26 June 2000. NARA prefers that you use either the postal address or fax number to submit our comments rather than e-mail A complete copy of the Federal Register notice is available from the NARA Web site at http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html. The proposed Reproduction Fee Schedule covers a number of items, but the Military Service Records, and the Pension and Bounty-Land Warrants are of the greatest concern to genealogists. NARA proposes three major changes: 1. The NATF Form 80 would be discontinued, to be replaced by two new forms: NATF Form 85 to request both Bounty-Land Warrant application files and Pension files (more than 75 years old), and NATF From 86 to request Military Service Records (more than 75 years old). 2. For all three types of files, NARA would no longer send a selection of pages, but would send the complete file. This would eliminate the two-step process currently used and should be beneficial to most genealogists. 3. The fees for all three types of files would be raised. For Military Service Records the new fee would be $17.00, regardless of the number of pages included in the file. For Bounty-land Warrants the fee would be $17.25, again without regard to the number of pages. For Pension Files the fee would be $40.00, regardless of the number of pages. Finally, the proposal would go into effect on 1 September 2000, if approved. Many genealogists may consider the proposed fees to be excessive. NARA specifically invites comment on the proposed fee schedule. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee urges everyone who wants to comment to carefully read the full proposal before submitting comments. The proposed fees are intended to cover the actual cost of locating, copying and mailing the records and are based on the average size of the files. NARA states that the average for Military Service Records and Bounty-land Applications is somewhere under 20 pages, while the average for full Pension Files is 105 pages. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee will be looking at the NARA proposal carefully, and will submit comments as appropriate. Individuals who would like to provide input to the Committee's evaluation are welcome to do so but are also encouraged to comment direct to NARA at the address given above. Comments for Committee consideration should be e-mailed to fgs-access@fgs.org, or mailed to Federation of Genealogical Societies, Attention: RPAC, PO Box 200940, Austin, TX 78720-0940. In order for the Records Preservation and Access Committee to adequately evaluate such input it must be received by 26 May 2000. The deadline for comment to NARA, however, is still 26 June 2000. Posting of this message to other mail lists is encouraged. A copy of this message will also be available on the Records Preservation and Access page of the FGS Web site <http://www.fgs.org/fgs-recordsnews.htm> and on the NGS Web site <http://www.ngsgenealogy.org> Patsy Hamrick Weikart California State Librarian - 2000 -2002 CSSDAR "Our family tree.... Hello, I am desperately searching for any information on Darrel Russell Paugh, b. abt 1914. On 6 Mar 1934 he married Thelma Frances Lake in Buckhannon, WV, by the Rev. F.E. Chase. (Recorded in Marriage Book No. 19, Page 196) They were divorce about 1938 or 1939. They had a daughter Beulah Pearl Paugh, b. 13 Nov 1934. Beulah saw her father only 1 or 2 times after the divorce. She remembers that Darrel's mothers name was Mary and that she may have been married to a Charles Smith, Upshur Co.? Thelma Lake, my great aunt died in 1998. Her daughter is interested in any information on her father. If anyone can help me please respond to: DMarieOff@aol.com trying to knock down brick walls! Thank you for your time and help. Since Lynette was kind enough to share the name address, & phone number of the company (Back Fork Publishing) that owns the "Webster Echo," and "Webster Republican," I wanted to pass along the results of my communication with them. They said they had a "devastating fire" in the early 1970s which destroyed the back issues of the newspapers. From about 1972 onward, they saved obituaries and placed them in bound books. Researchers are welcome to visit their facility to examine these obituaries. Back Fork Publishing 219 Back Fork Street Webster Springs, WV 26288 Phone: 304/847-5828 Deanna Williams
Just wondering if anyone out there has ANY information on ANY BEATHE for ANY timeframe. Thanks - bj
Hi everyone, I thought that I would share a small project that I am working on. The Library of Virginia has a lot of land grants online with the card indexes and document images. So, I am working through transcribing the Givens and Gregory land patents. I don't know the genealogical significance of these, but I find these interesting because it shows relationships of the different people. Anyway, if you want more of these, let me know. I tried to get back to each request individually, if I missed you, sorry. Thanks to everyone for your interest. Jim Site: http://hey.to/JimBurns/ < Thanks Jim! Here is some information on three of the students listed. The Eugene Johns, from the Cowen School, would have been Orville Eugene Johns(1923-1957). He was a son of Johnny Johns (1891-1973) and Emma Morrison (1898-1989). Eugene went on to attend Cowen High School, but dropped out to join the Navy in 1940. I suspect that he lied about his age to get in the service. He was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. An article published in the Webster Echo stated that "The ships on either side of him were sunk but miraculously the munitions vessel on which he was serving remained unscathed." Eugene also saw action at Midway, Wake Island, Coral Sea, Kiska, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinanawa, Saipan, Palau and New Guinea. He held the ratings of Chief Machinist's Mate Shop (CMMS) at the time he was Honorably Discharged in 1948. After leaving the Navy, he lived in California where he worked under Civil Service as ann Estimator & Planner. He was killed when the pick up truck he was driving overturned off of the highway. He was married and the father of one son. Billy Bogart. from the Arcola School, is now known as "Bill Bogart". Bill was the youngest of two sons of Walter Bogart (1887-1968) and Clara Weese (1883-1981). The parents were long time residents of Arcola. Bill graduated from Cowen High School in 1942. His older brother, Carl Bogart, was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. Billy was seventeen when his brother went into the service and he wanted very badly to enter the army also. He talked his father into signing for him. However, he failed to pass the physical exam. His mother remarked that it was odd that the military would take the son that didn't want to go into the army, but reject the one that did. During the war, Bill went to Chicago where he worked for IBM. He had a long career with IBM and at various times worked and lived in Chicago, Illinois; New Mexico, California and Denver, Colorado. He retired in 1984. Bill now spends his summers in Colorado and winters in Arizona. Bill was married and divorced. He is the father of two children: a daughter & son. He also has grandchildren. Zanna Sue Deel (1922-1998) better known as "Zanna Henline". She was the daughter of Willis M. Deel (1878-1949) and Viola Woods (1889-1956). Zanna attended Cowen High School, however I don't know if she graduated. In 1945, she married Hoy M. "Mac" Henline (1922-1994) and they were long time residents of Arcola. Mac was an army veteran of World War II and a coal miner. Zanna was an housewife and she and Mac were the parents of four children: one daughter and three sons. Zanna died of cancer in 1998. Some of the ot the other names listed sounded familar, but I can't place them. Perhaps others on this list can tell us something about them. It would be great if we knew the married names of some of the girls on this list. Roger
Jim, I did know many of the students on your Glade District Commencement Bulletin. It brought back a lot of memories. Some of those students went on to serve in WW11. Many of them are no longer living. It must be difficult for our young researchers to picture what it was like to be the only student in the eighth grade, but that was often the case in the rural areas of Webster. Transportation was still difficult in the 30's, and older children were kept at home to help with the farms. Many never went on to high school. This was the only bulletin their name appeared in, and the end of their schooling. Glancing down the list, I can tell you that a few did go on to college and went on to successful careers. Others were successful regardless of their lack of education. First and foremost, they were our Wonderful Webster People. Thanks so much for sharing, Lenore Radcliffe Yeager

Jim, I would love to see a posting of the Glade Dist. 8th Grade Commencement List as well as the other areas you mentioned, Camden, Arcola etc. I've tied down a lot of information on earlier ancestors from lists, programs, church bulletins and records saved by family members no longer with us. I'm sure many of us will recognize family names. Thanks much, Lenore
