    2. Terri Brake
    3. A cheerful "hello" to all! I'd like to share an old picture I was recently given of six gentlemen which was found in an attic of an old Webster County home. Handwritten on the photo is "Webster Springs, W.Va". It appears several of the men are wearing similar styled rings....maybe indicative of an organization or club?? Let me know if anyone can ID any of these gentlemen! http://homepages.go.com/~wvbreeze/mysterymen.jpg Regards, Terri Brake-McCourt coffee-Brake@webtv.net

    3. Excellent. I just presumed, in writing that piece, that if it hadn't happened in my lifetime, it hadn't happened, though I know Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma also got their share of West Virginians from the 1880s through the part of the 1900s. Your last sentence about the proportion of kids to jobs really nails it down. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376 ---------- >From: "Robert L. 3. I was wondering if anyone knows the history of the Hickman Cemetery at Dyer? Specifically, I'm wondering who the original owner of the land was or who owned it around 1900 or the 1920's. I am trying to find the grave of Minnie McAvoy Walker (died in June 1900) and the grave of Florence Wright Walker (died around 1922). They lived in the Cowen/Dyer area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cathy

    3. The migration to Akron began ajust after the first world war. The rubber factories opened up to make tires for the expanding number of automobiles. Goodyear was a great employer, as were other plants. Jobs were scarce in WV after 1900, and many went to Ohio, Texas, California, and other places. In fact, the exodus to the west began after the Revolution. West Virginia always produced more kids than jobs. Robert Lynch

    3. I was able to make a trip to the Hickman Cemetery today. Unfortuantely, I didn't get to record all the markers in the cemetery but I did manage to record these: Bennett, Charles H. 1948 - 1998 Wamsley, David M. 1982 - 1989 Wamsley, Bryan K 1969 - 1989 Wamsley, Amos D. (Kit) Jan 15, 1915 - May 21, 1932 It appears that there are alot of graves marked only with stakes and sawed-off fence posts. I didn't see any type of identification on these "markers". Does anyone recognize this VANIE LEWIS WALKER? I'm sure that he is connected to my Walkers but I don't know how. ESTIE WALKER is the wife of IVAN R. WALKER. Her maiden name is CHRISTIAN. I'm sure she is related to the Christians buried in this cemetery, I just don't know how. Cathy

    3. We all owe thanks to Judi Spencer for posting the Akron (OH) Beacon-Journal obituaries. I am mentioning the following for non-West Virginians who may be unaware of the reason. It is striking that there are so many in Akron. But I believe someone told me that at one point nearly half of the population of Akron was from West Virginia. It reflected, in the main, the great migration from the coal fields in the late 1940s, 1950s and part of the 1960s. If you lived in West Virginia then, there was nothing more conspicuous at that time than Ohio license tags on weekends. The industrialization of Northeast Ohio at that time offered the only alternative available as a job of any kind to military service. And West Virginia was said to have lost more soldiers per capita in the Korean War than any other state. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone and fax: 330-454-2376
