I have an unexplored line in my genealogy that begins with Belle Stoute (Stout) I believe she was born between abt 1910 and 1915. Her parents were Daniel Stoute and Christina Keener (b. 1882 died 10-28-1923). Christina's parents were John Keener and Rebecca Chapman (b. 1860?). Most, if not all, of these individuals lived in Webster county at some time. For awhile Christina and Belle Stoute lived in Hardwood. If anyone has any information on any of these individuals i'd love to hear from you. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
I made it back to sunset memorial park in erbacon yesterday, i was able to correct a lot of errors on the rough draft and i've added some more information. I still need to make one more trip, i've still got about two hours of work left to do there. I also found the Amos Run cemetery near Wainville, it contains about 25 graves, i've recorded the information and I should be able to post it within the next day or so. On a topographic map i've located two more cemeteries on Glade Run, which is also near Wainville. I took a drive up there but the cemeteries weren't immediately visible so i'm going to have to get more specific directions. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I've been reading the discussion of cemeteries and maps with great interest. I'm no expert but do train a beginner's course in map reading for the Girl Scouts. On a U.S. Geological Survey map, a cemetery is usually shown as a box of broken lines with CEM beside of it. This is kind of hard to describe. It looks something like this: CEM _ CEM ___ |_| | + | (large cemetery) |___| A large cemetery, such as the Handschumaker Cemetery in Cowen, is identified by name. When working with topographical maps, keep in mind that these are made from photos taken from a plane. If the cemetery isn't visible or can't be identified as a cemetery, it may not appear on the maps. I have found it helpful to get a county highway map from the WV Department of Transportation and use it with the topo maps. I found a couple of cemeteries shown on the county highway map of Webster County that didn't show up on the topo maps. To get topo maps, check with local stores that deal with hiking and backpacking equipment. They may also sell the highway maps. Also check with your local Department of Highways office for the maps. For help with cleaning cemeteries, don't forget your local Girl Scouts. The older girls are required to do service projects with every badge. Also look in your area for a Civil Air Patrol group. Check with your local high school. The high schools here in Putnam County (WV) are making a big push to get the kids to do community service. I'll be out of town until the end of the week but if anyone needs help in locating maps of WV, just let me know and I'll get back to you. Cathy
I've been told about two more cemeteries close to wainville. Both are up Amos Run, the first supposedly contains about 20-30 graves with several markers, the second is smaller with only one tombstone with the rest of the graves marked by field stone. I've also been told that the Mcelwain cemetery up Amos run is much larger than the five graves I discoved when i visted it. Because of the heavy undergrowth and fallen trees i could only verify a total of five graves, three with stones but only one of those was legible, the other two were infant stones. This cemetery is also supposed to contain over twenty graves so i'll probably go back for one more look. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
There is a cemetery just across the ravine from where the school house stood. The school was on the hill up from the Boarding House. If you can find the foundation for the 'powder house' the tram road used to be there to take one to the cemetery. Or find the school house foundation and when facing the town of Barton, go across the ravine on your right and you should find the cemetery. I lived in Barton from 1936 to 1950. Went to school there until Jr, Hi. when we were bussed to Webster Springs. I really appreciate your labor in preparing this web page. Thank you, Jackie Smith Ellington Panora, Iowa
For those who missed it, Sunset Memorial Park is in Erbacon. Just before you get to the fire house (used to be the grade school) a road turns off to the right (White Oak Road/Carpenter Fork). The cemetery sits in the fork between the main road and White Oak Road. I have been involved in cemetery upkeep and restoration since childhood. Twenty five years ago my parents began clearing the Adkisson Cemetery on Erbacon Road. It was overgrown with briars and trees, it wasn't possible to pass from one end of the cemetery to the other without cutting a path. My family has also been responsible for the upkeep of the Arcola Cemetery for several years. There are several stones in the Adkisson cemetery which need to be straightened, and a couple small ones are on the ground. A couple of the Crosby stones have crumbled into illegibility. Announcements in the Echo usually results in enough donations to hire someone to do the mowing for the summer. With the lack of substantial news in Webster County the newspaper would probably be happy to print any item which may be of interest. Not all cemeteries appear on USGS maps, I don't know that there is a size limit but i can't remember seeing any cemeteries listed which contained less than twenty graves. There is a symbol for a cemetery but i can't remember now what it is, churches are designated with a cross and cemeteries can usually be found in the vicinity of churches. >From: "Dan Hamrick" <dhamrick@neo.rr.com> >To: WVWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [WVWEBSTE] Sunset Memorial Park Here it is >Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 17:09:06 -0400 > > What an incredible service you are performing. What an incredible service you are performing. Thanks. Would you have a problem telling us outlanders where these cemeteries are located? I have been working to try to get momentum for an organization called the Pioneer Family History Preservation Society Inc., a nonprofit corporation, to collect money to clean small, old neglected family cemeteries, among other preservation projects. I am aware of the problem. The first time I went into the cemetery called The Benjamin Hamrick Cemetery on the farm of Bill Triplett down the Bergoo road, his wife, Barbara, standing in the cemetery, could barely be seen. We have been having that cemetery cleaned at least once or twice a year. But it needs work on the stones and graves. We had work done on the Hamrick Cemetery atop Morton Hill in Webster Springs, but descendants of those buried there have done a fantastic job of cleaning it up in recent years. These mostly have involved the sons and daughters of Simpson and Attie Blankenship Hamrick such as Nancy Grimm, Paul, George and Gene Hamrick. Jamie Hamrick has been taking care of the lot of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. We have much more to do: The grave of James Dodrill, whom I believe to be the first Dodrill settler in Webster County, is neglected; its stone is on the ground. The stone of Adam G. "Squire" Adam Hamrick is on the ground, and it will take equipment to correct it. The cemetery on Dodrill Flats, up an incredibly winding, hazardous road from Bergoo, needs mowed a couple of times a year at least. We are working with a lawyer to try to get the Methodist Church to keep faith with Portia Hamrick's will by fixing the road to the Samp Hamrick Cemetery. Last year, we cleaned the cemetery of James Miller and Rebecca Dodrill Hamrick, in the woods below the Bergoo road. The Methodist Historical Society Inc., which accepted $50,000 from Portia Hamrick, has said repeatedly it has no responsibility for the road to its only destination the cemetery where Portia and members of her family are buried. So Portia's grave goes flower-less on Memorial Day because you can't get to it except in a four-wheel drive with a willingness to place your life at risk. I have lost my understanding as to what this church is responsible for. Period. Would the Webster Echo be willing to print your reports of the condition of these cemeteries to make the people of the county more conscious of the problem? Our largest problem has been to find someone in Webster County that we could pay to supervise the work. I have also promised to go to work on a map of these cemeteries. I was referred to the U.S. Geological Society maps but could not find the Gregory Cemetery above Barton as one example. I actually could find none. Maybe some list members know more about using it than I do. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone: 330-454-2376 ---------- >From: "michael henline" <patchez4@hotmail.com> >To: WVWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [WVWEBSTE] Sunset Memorial Park Here it is >Date: Sat, Jul 29, 2000, 10:44 AM > >This is a survey of the oldest section of the cemetery, which comprises >about half of the existing markers. This is a survey of the oldest section of the cemetery, which comprises about half of the existing markers. This section of the cemetery has knee high to waist high grass growing in it, along with poison ivy etc. It is entirely possible that some stones may have been overlooked in the tall grass. Many graves are marked only by fieldstone, some are not marked at all. Many stones are very difficult to read, some are impossible. There is also the problem of transcribing from a tape recorder, names like 'Mary Ann' sound about the same as 'Marion'. For these reasons this list should not be considered reliable, it contains many errors which i hope to reduce by another visit to the cemetery before the final draft is made. If you have any questions (such as what type marker does my g-grandad John Smith have?) or corrections to this list let me know. Graves were recorded as i came to them, walking up and down the hill. Sometimes graves that are side by side are seperated by many names becaused i recorded one name on my way up the hill and recorded the other name on the way down. The final draft of the list will be in alphabetical order by last name. J.A. Friend born Mar 4 1847 Died Feb 22 1912 Double Stone Children of J.V. and A.F. Does anyone know if these articles are being put on the Webster Co. Rootsweb site? I think they would be a great addition. Mark

Like you, i am a new member of the list, but in the short time i've been a member i've enjoyed this list more than the half dozen others i belong to all put together. This is one of the most active lists that i belong to and i really like that i recognize the place names and some of the people i remember my parents talking about. I'm still working on transcribing the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in Erbacon. I am probably one fourth of the way through. I only have information on the oldest half of the cemetery. The way i transcribe cemeteries is that i take a hand held micro cassette recorder and read off the tombstones, then after i get home i play back the tape and type in the information. The biggest problem so far is that after all the walking up and down hills all the recorder picks up is heavy breathing and a raspy whisper. After i finish typing up the rough draft i'll post the information and let everyone take a shot at correcting the numerous errors and to ask any questions, then i'll make one final trip to the cemetery and check my written information against the tombstones, make one last effort to read the illegible markers, make any corrections to my paper, and then type up a final draft which i'll post to the list. >From: "meloboo" <meloboo@gateway.net> >Reply-To: "meloboo" <meloboo@gateway.net> >To: WVWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [WVWEBSTE] Erbacon Cemeteries and Webster Echo News >Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 13:37:37 -0400 > >Even though I've just joined the Webster County mailing list, I've already >gleened much information about family and friends. From: The Webster Echo; Aug. 17, 1900. ERBACON. Harvesting nearly all done, with about two-thirds of a drop....A good deal of sickness about town....Father, James Barnett, of the lower end of town, is dangeroutly ill at this writing, Father Barnett is a good citizen, and it is feared he will not recover....We see P. B. Hoover, a Glade district school teacher on our streets, looking after the Erbacon school. We hope he may be successful, as he is a good and worthy young man and deserves employment whereever he goes....Sant Mason made a flying trip to Burnsville, Braxton county, recently, and came back home mounted on a fine horse which he purchased and paid spot cash for....Give us more such men as the accommodating landload, Jonathan Brown, who is taking in lots of cold cash these days. To say the least of Jonathan, he is an all-round good hotel man, and deserves the patronage of the traveling public....The trustees of the Missouri Run school have employed Mrs. Iska Stalnaker to teach the ensuing term. The selection is a good one....Uncle George Thomas is enjoying himself hugely for a man of his age. Mr. Thomas is perhaps the father of more school teachers than any man in the county. Let us hear from others, and then we will send in a correct report. Uncle George is our postmaster, and am pleased to say he does exceedingly well for a Republican, and being surrounded by a big gang of Democrats.... The railroad company is painting the depot here, which makes things shine, and adds much to the appearance of the town....Dr. Edgell, Rev. Cogar, John Davis, S. B. Holcomb and J. T. Fowler were on a fishing trip to Centralia a few dayss recently, and report an enjoyable trip. They did not come back ladened as heavily as might have been but they brought home some fish. J. T. Hosey was on the sick list a few days, but is able to be up again. J. F.
From: The Webster Echo; July 27, 1900. HARDWOOD. Corn in this section looks well .....J. H. Tyler and C. A. Sandy have bought a team of fine horses of Bird Paugh, and will go to logging....S. L. Mason, candidate for Justice of the Peace, passed through our town last Friday.....Uncle Billy Morris went to Cowen on Business last Saturday....G. R. Tyler contemplates buying a fine mare of S. L. Mason....John Norman, of Beaver Creek, is visiting friends at Hardwood....A special dance was given at John Tyler's Friday night, and the boys report a general blowout....We have a prosperout little town; preaching two or three times a year, with an occasional dance.... Good luck to the ECHO. TRY ME.
