    3. From: The Webster Echo, March 22, 1901. HECHMER. Business is booming. The new railroad is a sure thing this time. Mrs. Sallie Wine, of Braxton, is staying with Mrs. J. P. White. Loyd Carnes and J. P. White were called to Palmer on business last Friday. J. P. White our hustling merchant and lumberman, spent several days in Addison last week. Oscar Griffith, of Pickens, spent a day or two in our town last week looking after business interests. A small child of G. P. Gillespie's died of fever last Friday and was taken to Braxton for burial. J. P. White and W. B. Pettit, two of our most prominet lumbermen, were calling on old friends at Mud Lick last Sunday. Lewis Lumbard has moved his family from Cherry River to Desert Fork. Mr. Lumbard will grade the branch railroad from Desert Fork to Hodom. Everybody is delighted over the prospects of the new railroads, both to Hodom and Addison. The track from Palmer to Grassy Creek will be taken up and replaced with heavier steel. The steel taken up will be used to extend to extend the road to Hodom. JAKIE.

    3. The measles are coming this way. We are going to have another store soon. Mrs. Ida Ware is visiting her parents this week. The farmers are busily engaged in preparing for crops. J. P. White, of Hechmer, was in this vicinity recently looking after business matters. P. M. McElwain is having a nice lot of clearing done on the county poor farm. "Burb" is a hustler. Miss Alice Ware returned home Monday from Laurel Fork, where we learn she has just closed a successful term of school. ROSEBUD.

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Arcola Cemetery

    3. This cemetery was transcribed by Roger Stanley. Just today i double checked the information by walking the cemetery and with the aid of some water and a soft bristle brush was able to read some of the stones that Roger listed as nearly illegible. I have made a few corrections and this information should be considered an accurate record of the Arcola Cemetery. Located about six miles outside Cowen between Cowen and Erbacon, sits on hill behind the new Arcola Community Church. Land was once owned by John Henry Tyler, a portion of which was donated to the community for erection of a church and school. Many graves are not even marked with fieldstone and it appears that there may be as many unmarked graves as there are with legible markers. Cemetery is well maintained and mowed with a lawnmower. Road to cemetery required 4 wheel drive to navigate. Caretaker of cemetery is Sherry Holcomb IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANY PERSONS BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY WHO IS NOT ON THIS LIST PLEASE CONTACT ME. Row 1 1. I would, for example, like to find geographic maps for Webster and Randolph counties in West Virginia. Why does it appear that everyone can do this but me? Please! 3. -----Original Message----- From: LCFlu@aol.com <LCFlu@aol.com> Hello, Everyone: Not too long ago, I sent a message to you about my page, The Civil War Medals of WV -- Where Are They? http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvmarsha/cwmedals.htm Now I have a project about the 12th West Virginia Infantry, Civil War http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvmarsha/12thcover.htm The Regiment was made up from the counties, as follows: Cos. A, B and C, in Marshall; Co. D, in Ohio County; Cos. E and G, in Harrison; Co. F, in Marion; Co. H, in Taylor; Co. I, in Hancock, and Co. K, in Brooke County. I put the 1892 book about the 12th, by William Hewitt, online a few days ago and I have already received nearly 100 messages from people with information about the soldiers of the 12th. The objective is to make this a comprehensive history/genealogy of the 12th Regiment. I hope to get pension/military records, photos, bios, genealogy files, etc. about all of the 1000+ soldiers. I uploaded 100 new files yesterday, related to this page, so I am off to a good start. They are about ALL of West Virginia and beyond, not just the 4 WV counties I do genealogy pages for. For example, I recently added a booklet, HISTORY AND LIFE OF JOHN A. BOWEN, to the Medals' page.. It was written by John A. Bowen himself and he was from Huntington, CABELL County. I am told there is a monument of some sort to him in Huntington, although he later moved to Proctorville, OH. Another interesting story is that of ONNIE MITCHELL, still living, whose FATHER, CAGER MITCHELL, of LOGAN COUNTY was in the Civil War. Not common to find a son of a Civil War soldier! Gov . Underwood presented Onnie with his father's medal from the WV State Archives last year. I have the story and photo on the Medals page. Thanks very much for your consideration of my request. 3. Dear list members: Now that I have posted so many inter-marriages among Hamricks, Gregorys and Dodrills, allow me a couple of questions and observations: What choice did they have? Like the people of Southeastern Kentucky, they were related to everyone. You may know that Arnold Hamrick and Angeline Dodrill are Patsy Hamrick Weikart's and Nancy Grimm's ancestors. But you should not hold Patsy responsible for this. She had other ancestors who were more closely related. So she should not be held accountable all the time for all of her words and actions. Her ancestors tried to mix it up: Hamrick, Gregory, Dodrill, Givens more than once, Harris, Hollingsworth, McCray, Conrad, Sands, Mollohan, etc. Of course, we will avoid going into the relationships of the Conrads and Mollohans to the same families. I asked Ted Smith if he thinks these were the times, the culture, the mountains that put difficult distances between families. But my neighbors have Quaker descent. The main reason, they say, for the loss of Quaker membership was a rule against marriage within the family. Much of this was in Pennsylvania. So it apparently was a part of the culture of the times, regardless of where you lived. My great-great grandfather, David Hamrick, married a Miller rather than a Hamrick, Dodrill or Gregory. On the face of it, that appears noble. But, boy, did his own family mess it up. So, I, too, do not want to be held responsible. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone: 330-454-2376

There were no children by my short-lived marriage to Mary Jane Dodrill Griffey, so future generations need have to fear, of us having been perpetrators. He probably just anticipated the birth of the computer some day and did all of his marriages for our bedevilment, though his marriages are to Gregory descendants. I haven't gotten into descendants because I don't want to work on it through the next century. Billy G. was a Civil War soldier, according to Mayme Hamrick's book, but better known as a bear hunter, like his father. His marriages are too complex, I contend, for DNA science. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone: 330-454-2376

    3. There has been some discussion about Wainville and early settlers and i came across this chapter in "Moccasin Tracks and other Imprints" by William Dodrill and thought this would be a good time to review the information. Tunice Muckelwain (McElwain), born in 1773, came to the Elk valley from Pendleton county about 1810, and settled on Holly. He had married Catharine Propst before coming to the county and was the father of ten children. Catharine was born in 1792: George in 1793: Barbary in 1795: Mary in 1798: Thomas in 1800: Dorotheain 1806; Catharine (named after her deceased sister) in 1808; Jacob in 1810; Elizabeth in 1813; and Nancy in 1815. It can be seen that no charge of race suicide can be alleged against this German-American citizen. George married Elizabeth Perrine, born in 1798. This marriage occured in 1813, and the young couple, full of pluck and vim, settled at the mouth of Laurel creek, where they remained until 1832. They then moved to what is now Wainville, and remained there until Mr. McElwain's death, which occured in 1854. He was a good farmer and left each of his three sons a fine farm adjoining each other. He was a noted hunter, but he did not let that diversion interfere with his farm work. He belonged to that class of pioneers that did things. They subdued the wilderness and fought the Indians and the British. They did their full share in the work of laying the foundation of sovereign states. George McElwain was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was the father of ten children-- Nancy, Catharine, Dianah, Andrew, Jane, Rachel, Lewis, Elizabeth, George and Jerusha. They married and settled in what is now Webster county. Nancy married Isaac Weese and moved to the right hand fork of Lost run. She was the mother of four children-- Martha, Andrew, Addison and Angeline. She died in 1852. Catharine married Enos Weese and lived on the left hand fork of Lost run. She was the mother of George, Lewis, Mack, Wesley, Reuben, Elizabeth, Virginia, Dianah and Catharine. Mrs. Weese died in 1858 and was buried in the McElwain cemetery near Wainville. Dianah married Abraham Goff and settled on Laurel creek one mile above Wainville. She baecame the mother of eight children. Their names were Thomas, Mary, John, Louisa, George, Albert, Benjamin and Isaac. She died in 1884. Andrew, born in 1826, married Margaret Sawyers in 1850, and moved to the Gauley in 1873. He was the father of Thomas S., William D., George S., Lewis J., Enos W., Preston M., Kate and Robert. He was a justice of the peace and served as assessor for twelve years. He died in 1888 and was laid to rest in the old Wainville cemetery. his wife died in 1891. As stated in a former sketch Jane married William Woods and settled on the head of Birch river. She was the mother of eight children and lived until 1908, and her husband died in 1914. Rachel, born in 1828, married John Given about 1846, and settled at Upper Glade. They lived there until 1863, where Mr. Given was killed by Federal soldiers. She was the mother of three children: Elizabeth, Fannie and Samuel Kyle. She married Major Marshall Triplett in 1865 and raised one son, Hedgeman. She is the only one of the family now (1915) living. Major Triplett died in 1898. Lewis, born in 1832, married Matilda Hickman [note: her stone identifies her as 'Mary M.']in 1854 and began houskeeping in the old McElwain homstead near Wainville, then Nicholas county. He was the father of eight children--seven daughters and one son. They were named Rhoda, Martha, Tunice, Catharine, Mary, Jerusha, and Ida. The second daughter (name unknown)[note: her name was Hannah 1856-1861] died at the age of five years. He took a very active part in the affairs of Webster county. He was one of the supervisors in 1871 and 1872. He was elected a justice of the peace in 1876 and served a full term of four years. He was elected a member of the County Court in 1880. He was president of that body for four years in a term of six years. He died in 1911 and his wife in 1912. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
