I am sending my family of Harris's out again - in case a new researcher may be my cousin. I would like a clue to the background history of Samuel Harris born abt 1765 - 1773 VA or NC. Married Sarah "Betsy" Hollandswoth born posssibly Henry County, VA abt 1770 - may be the daughter of Thomas Hollandsworth Sr. and Susannah Mayze (Maze) Henry Co. married May 1793 - Chesterfield County, Va ( not proven fact) and both died and buried in Patrick co.VA. - possible buried on their farm with no grave stones. They had a son Samuel Monroe Harris married Sarah "Sally' Vaughan - Henry County. If anyone has any details of this family or researching these lines or know of their graves - I would love to hear from you. Patsy in California
Somebody sent me a list of the folks buried in this cemetery, (four out of the six) and i misplaced the email without getting a hard copy. Could the person be kind enough to resend the information? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
After visiting many cemeteries and noting the many unmarked graves i had an idea. Why not visit the court house and go throught the death records? I had already visited the local funeral home and was told that records before 1985 (maybe it was 1975) were very spotty and the information wasn't recorded in such a way that it would be easy to find all the people buried in one cemetery. Here's what i found, before about 1920 death records didn't ask for the final resting place of the deceased, but did record where a person died. A person could assume that in a small community the deceased would be buried in the local cemetery, but this isn't very reliable. For example, some people listed as living at Arcola actually lived at Hardwood, about two miles below Arcola, and according to my records are buried in the Adkisson Cemetery, about three miles above Arcola. So if i assumed they were buried at the Arcola cemetery i would have been very wrong. And if a person could have been buried at a cemetery five miles from where they lived i could draw a five mile circle around their house and come up with at least thirteen cemeteries. Another consideration is that in order to save time instead of giving the specific location where the person died the location was often simply listed as 'Webster county'. The records from abt 1920 to abt 1947 do ask for the final resting place of the deceased but many times instead of cemetery names just the name of the community where they were buried was listed, and many many names had no final resting place listed. The closer to 1940 you get the easier it gets to determine where people were buried. After abt 1948 to abt 1977 most of the deceased were listed with the specific cemetery where they were buried, but this doesn't take into account people who died outside the county and were brought back to Webster county to be buried. But even with these obstacles i went through and recorded everyone who was listed as having deceased or been buried in Marcus, Halo (the same community with different names) or Arcola between 1910 and 1977. i then cross checked this information with my transcription of the five cemeteries in these two communities and have a list of about twenty additional people that i believe are buried in the Arcola Cemetery with no markers and about ten people buried in Adkison cemetery with no markers. I have also been able to add additional information to the simple lists of the tombstones in these two cemeteries. My next step is to take the list to a couple of the older residents of these two communities to see if they can help verify that these people are actually buried in the above named cemeteries. when i'm done i hope to be able to erect some markers on the unmarked graves and to post the information to this list. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I saw the recent posting about John H Tyler of Webster Co. I have him in the census as 2 in 1860. Father Isaac B (born about 1832)and mother Polly. other brother James L. I strongly believe their father Isaac is the brother of Sarah Tyler who married James RANER in Pocahontas Co in 1843. Sarah and James are living close to Isaac as are her mother's kin the Adkissons. Sarah was the daughter of William Tyler and Catherine Adkisson. William evidentally died maybe around the birth of Isaac, those facts are unknown, and Catherine moved with her parents- Barnett Adkisson and Eleanor Sanders Adkisson- to Pocahontas Co, Va from the Madison Co area around 1833/34. William and Catherine were married in Madison 17 Jul 1822. Sarah was born in 1823. I know she had some brothers as there were, I think 2, young males listed on the 1830 census. Catherine remarried in Pocahontas Co in 1834 to Jacob Weiford. She died at Little Levels, Pocahontas Co, july 1 1866 of typhoid fever. I don't know about William's parentage or what became of him. Now you've stirred my curiosity. I've been keeping an eye out for information about John Henry Tyler who married Rachel Carpenter. John was born abt 1858, his father's name was Isaac. To my knowledge John lived most of his life at Arcola, and is buried there. Some of the surnames mentioned are also connected to my Tylers, such as Green, Morris, Hickman, and Keller. >From: "Chadd and Martha Rose" <tuckman5@intrepid.net> >To: WVWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [WVWEBSTE] Morgan Tyler Family >Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 03:11:18 -0400 > >Hi Janet, > Thank you so much for the information. For those who don't know or have forgotton there is a search engine which will search all previous posts made to a mailing list. To search all of the previous posts made to the webster county mailing list go to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in WVWEBSTE for the name of list. In the new window select the year you want to search and type in your query, such as your surname (Tyler, Henline, Hamrick etc) or a subject like cemeteries, Addison, Cowen, etc. The search engine will provide all posts containing that word. The same search engine can be used to search other county mailing lists, for example instead of typing in WVWEBSTE on the first page type in WVCLAY and it will allow you to search the clay county mailing list. Or you can type in WVNICHOL to search the Nicholas county mailing list. For the computer illiterate the final page showing the search results might be a bit confusing. To keep it simple find one of the returns whose subject line looks interesting and click FULL to show the entire message including email address of sender. Hope this helps ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I am trying to find out anything at all about Alpha E. Williams. Anyone have any data, clues or tips? Maude Williams b. may 8 1888 d. nov 24 1958 born of Alpha E. Williams and Mary McCray m. Jul 1887 in Webster Springs. Mary McCray is the daughter of Evan McCray, son of Robert McCray. Mary McCray and her daughter are buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Weston. I've been to the Webster County Courthouse and learned it burned in 1888, so was unable to find the marriage records for Alpha and Mary. Daughter Maude was born in Cleveland. I did find Maude's 1904 marriage license, but no useful data. Maude is my paternal grandmother. Ken Curry

Hi Michael, I want to thank you for the information on the cemeteries. There has to be a lot of time invested in behalf of others. I appreciate your effect and for sharing with me, and wanted you to know. Warm Regards, Evelyn
Here is yet another cemetery, this one is located just beyond Camden-on-Gauley, just a mile or so on the Tioga road beyond Black's Chapel church. The cemetery may actually be in Nicholas county but a lot of former Webster county residents are buried there. I didn't do this cemetery so can't vouch for the accuracy of the data, i've been there and it is a large, well kept cemetery with virtually all of the graves marked with legible markers. finally got all the corrections made and the cemetery in a semi alphabetical order for easier searching. Won't guarantee that this list is error free but it is a lot closer than the first list. Sunset Memorial Park This cemetery sits at the mouth of White Oak Road in Erbacon. It seems to be divided in two, with the older section on the right being overgrown and unkept. The left side is much newer (from about the 1950's on) and is mowed and in good shape. Names are in more or less alphabetical order. Delila J. From: The Webster Echo, May 17, 1901. ERBACON Corn is being planted. Bert Brown is walking on crutches. Will DeLung is able to travel about some. T. J. Hosey has improved his store room on the inside. Gus DeLung is exercising his muscles by working on the section. Jake Wilson has purchased a lot of Bert Brown, and is preparing to build a dwelling house. George Brown has completed his dwelling house and moved into same, becomiing a resident of Missouri Street. Born, unto Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Scott, a son. Andy has been so hilarious and jubilant since the event that his friends are disposed to keep an eye on him. His clerk-ability is below par. A Sunday school was organized at the M. P. church recently. S. A. DeLung was chosed Superintendent and G. A. Long Secretary. We trust that the people will take great interest in the school, and that the younngsters of the town will be found there rather than prowling around. The smallpox scare is about a thing of the past. None have developed here, and we are of the opinion that is was a stare-hoax more than smallpox. We trust that the report was a "false alarm." However, some at Wainville have been troubled with something not very pleasant, and 'tis hoped not very contagious. The people here don't seem much scared up. Which would be the better as well as the wiser plan, to attend church and spend the remainer of the time with "the folks at home." conversing, reading the Bible, etc., each Sunday, or Strutting up and down the railroad and tram road to "while away the time!" The Bible says: "Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy." Of course, Sunday is not the day here referred to; but it is a substitute therefor under the New Covenant. RATTLER.
From: the Webster Echo, Nov. 23, 1900 ERBACON. Walter Shinn, Justice-elect, severely sprained his ankle the other day....Enoch Cutlip, of Diana, passed here last Saturday en route for Little Birch, Braxton county....Messes. Wilson, cattle merchants, were here this week ....The sick are improving, though Mrs. Amon Rollins is quite low at present....George Goad, Sheriff-elect of Braxton, is here looking after his business interests ....The Erbacon school, under the management of Miss hamrick, is progressing nicely....W.S.P. Carper, drummer, was interviewing our merchants Tuesday....Rev. McClung, of Gilmer county, will preach a series of sermons here, beginning on the night of the 26th November....Rev. J. C. H. Cogar preached an interesting sermon here last Sunday....Why not organize a Literary Society here....A protracted meeting is, we understand, announced for here, beginning on Second Sunday of December....Times will now be better (for imperialism, militarism, polygamy, trusts, monopolies bankers, and bond holders) from now on. Let Democrats note the times, and keep the people in mind of all things. RATTLER.
From: The Webster Echo, March 22, 1901. ERBACON. The mattock and axe are in vogue. W. F. Frame, of Sutton, was here last week. Haymond Friend, of Triplett, Braxton county, was here on business last week. Don't forget the debate on Saturday night March 23, as it will doubtless be a treat. Uncle Lewis McElwain, of Wainville was here last Wednesday, having been summoned as a joror in the Fox-Goad action. Dr. A. N. Ellison, of Little Birch, rode into our town Wednesday. He is 85 years old, and rode horse back 12 miles to get here. the Doctor's many friends were glad to see him once more. Black Holcomb, preacher, hunter, and all round farmer, has purchased a house and lot of A. N. Ellison for $175. Black knows a bargain when he sees it, since the great stir in material wealth. John Davis, one of Erbacon's prosperous and energetic farmers, is greatly improving his dwelling house. Jake Carpenter, that genius worker is wood, who can make anything from wood that was ever dreamed of, is doing the work. Jake is not as green as he is green looking. There was a little scrap here last Friday evening between Jake Wilson and David McCown, in which it seems that McCown made an assault upon Wilson, hitting him with a stone. Wilson swore out a warrant before Squire Shinn and had McCown brought into Court. He confessed for five dollars fine and cost. RATTLER.
