    1. [WVWEBSTE] Wainville. May 15, 1903.
    2. Roger B. Stanley
    3. From: The Webster Echo; May 15, 1903. WAINVILLE. Ike Woods and Willis Weese have a large clearing on hand. F. K. Bryant had a valuable cow killed by the train one day last week. Rev. Matthew Perrine filled his regular appointment at Erbacon last Sunday. Mrs. McCoy has been quite ill here at the home of her daughter Mrs. Bryant. Luther Green has been vbery low with appendicitis, but seems now to be improving. G. R. Pierson, of Cowen, was here last week assisting in invoicing the Moffett stock of goods. Mrs. Clara Chipps visited her friends at Edwin Sunday and returned home on the Monday afternoon train. Wade Flint is still working at Cowen but he visits Wainville friends quite freguently, and always calls around at Charlie's. L. H. Moffett has sold his stock of goods to Tunis McElwain, and we understand that Mr. Moffett will go into business at Burnsville. One would suppose from the way Ad Weese is feeling frees and clearing up corn ground that corn will be twenty-five cents per bushel another year. B. F. Dodrill, high constable here, is kept right busy serving law processes these days. Frank says the people are lawing so much that he can't get time to plant corn.

    3. From: The Webster Echo; Aug. 21, 1903. ERBACON. Corn is looking well....Nathan Barnett, of Braxton, is visiting here....John T. Fowler is able to sit up a little at a time....Mr. and Mrs. Haine Boggs, of Braxton, were visiting relatives here last week....A small show exhibited at the school house a couple of nights last week....Rev. C. L. Queen, President of the West Virginia Annual Conference M. P. Church, delivered a very able discourse here last week....W. H. DeLung is again hobbling around on crutches, caused by an attack of chronic rheumatism....Ira Scott had the misfortune to break the bones of one foot some days ago by a sled running over it....R. M. Gross talks of sending his team to Richwood to haul lumber from Cherry to Richwood for H. Boggs, provided he can employ a trusted driver....Our blow at gossipping some weeks ago was well received by many. We trust it may be as "bread cast upon the waters, that the fruits thereof may be seen many days hence." Too much trouble is caused by tale-bearers....The trustees of the Missouri Run school employed Arthur N. Hines, of Little Birch, Braxton county, to teach the coming term of school. Mr. Hines is a young man of excellent repute, having taught several terms of school, and being one of the two applicants who received first grade certificates in the Braxton examination., He is one of that county's best young instructors. The trustees were fortunate in securing him by sending him a call.

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Cemetery Book
    2. michael henline
    3. Looking for Ron Hardway's book about Webster county cemeteries. Willing to pay a reasonable price. I want to compare the older transcriptions with the work i'm doing now to discover missing markers or help in reading those well worn stones. Also might help locate local cemeteries that i don't know about. If you own the book or have access to it but aren't willing to sell would you be willing to loan the book or make copies of selected pages to assist me in my work? I'm also interested in any transciptions that anyone has done (or partial transcriptions) of Webster county cemeteries, or if you have knowledge of anyone buried in a Webster county cemetery who doesn't have a marker please contact me. I plan on posting all the information i gather to the Webster mailing list and possibly other related lists which might be interested in the information. At some point i also would like to post the information on the Webster county web page (provided i can get the cooperation of the webmaster). I will also make the information available to any historical society which might be interested in publishing the material. Thank you for your assistance _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 3. One of the 11 children listed for Benjamin Hamrick and Nancy McMillian was a son, John, about whom little is known. I have information from Tressie Nealy that he was listed in the 1860 census in Greenbrier County, VA (now WV), as the father of Jonathan Hamrick. There also is a little information on Jonathan, the son, from J.R. McKinney. He appears to have been married to a Nancy Perkins and perhaps his second wife's name also was Nancy, though no last name is known for her. I also have little on the last son, Cyrus, except for his marriage and the names of his children ‹ nothing past that generation. Much is known about many of the others such as William, David and Benjamin but these are lesser known children of this Hamrick couple. If you have any information on John or Cyrus or their descendants, I would appreciate knowing about it, as would other members of these lists. dhamrick@neo.rr.com Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709 Phone: 330-454-2376

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Erbacon. March 28, 1902.
    2. Roger Stanley
    3. From: The Webster Echo, March 28, 1902. ERBACON. Spring is coming slowly. Garden making is the order of the day. Buds and grass are showing signs of life. A little dog case is attracting the court, bar and a few others. W. N. Long has rented the E. L. Floyd property and will soon move into same. Mrs. Sarah Dillon is again indisposed with her old trouble, for which she was treated at a Baltimore hospital. Dr. E. E. Edgell is expected home from Clarksburg tomorrow, the 25th. We expect him to bring us coal facts. "Uncle" Jake Byers and daughter Jane took the train here last Saturday for Parkersburg, where they will reside in the future. Austin Carder and wife, of Doddridge county, are here, and expect to remain during the summer, as Mr. Carder claims to have better health here than in Doddridge. S. A. DeLung, that hustling school teacher, is filling his father-in-law's position as chief cook for John Davis' saw-mill crew whilst "Dad" McCombs is at home with his family. "To free his hands from clinging dough, he kneads a barrel of flour." The Erbacon school closed last Friday with appropriate exercises. The teacher, Mr. S. B. Cook, gave fairly good satisfaction. He is a man of firm principle and solid in methods of instruction. He looks well to his pupils' moral welfare. Trustees make a splendid choice when they select "Saul of Erbacon." Rev. S. B. Holcomb, our resident preacher, horse jockey, dealer in blooded fox hounds and all round jolly citizen, is hauling staves from Albin Hall's to Erbacon for A. F. Scott. Black uses the whip in his left hand, but he gets there with a load just the same, and is piling the staves up by the hundreds. We see the candidates are coming one by one. But we want to see more than one for each office. We would like also to see in each announcement one or the other of the following declarations: I am opposed to the granting of license, or I am in favor of License. It would then take no political card to explain their attitude and it would prevent any misconstruction. RATTLER.

    1. [WVWEBSTE] Upper Glade Oct. 13, 1899
    2. Roger Stanley
    3. From: The Webster Echo, Oct. 13, 1899 UPPER GLADE. Everything seems to be in a prosperous condition at present. Some of our hustling farmers have cominced husking corn. F. M. Weese, ex-member of the County Court, has opened up a saloon at his residence at Upper Glade. J.S. Herndon is taking orders for the American Woolen Mills Company, for made to order clothing. Jim has sold a good many suits about here. Some of our boys attended Federal Court at Clarksburg last week. Mrs. Laura Ruddle of Sand Fork, Gilmer county, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Griffin this week. S. R. Jones, the Turkey Creek lumberman, is droving a team for Edwin Hollisster. Ira Cherrington has purchased a saw-box and some others repairs for his saw mill from Hart Bros., and will begin sawing again this week. Thomas Rigsby has contracted to put some timber into Gauley river, for the Gauley Company. Rev. John Cogar preached an eloguent sermon at the Upper Glade church Sunday. The kissing bug has not been seen in this vicinity as yet, but we have been bothered a great deal with some kind of a bug, but we hope that some good farmer who attends the Webster County Farmer's Institute at Cowen will apply some name, and then suggest some way to eradicate it. GUY.

    3. From: The Webster Echo, March 28, 1902. WAINVILLE. T. W. McElwain spent Sunday at Camden. Ellis Weese is hauling staves for Smith & Co. Wain Hoover and Sam Goff, of Cowen, were here Sunday. Andy Green, Jr., has moved from Sims run to Keystone. Ham Morrison, of Hardwood, has moved into the Kessler property here. F. M. Weese is going to erect a grist mill at the falls below his dwelling house. Some preparations are being made by the farmers of this locality for putting out crops. Miss Alice Dodrill, of Birch River, is visiting her sister, Mrs. L. M. Green, at this place. Duby Flint, of this place who was arrested at Cowen a few nights ago for exhibiting his skill as a dancer, at a literary, out-witted the police and excaped. The first bicycle accident of the season occurred last Sunday on Tin Can Alley. The victim of the wreck was Beri Woods, and the cause was an old poor cow. The machinery for drilling some test oil wells is here and work will begin in a few days. Considerable excitement prevails, as all believe the greasy fluid is here and will be developed. EB. 1. [WVWEBSTE] Missing Tombstones?
    2. michael henline
    3. Occasionally i'll hear stories about a couple tombstones that were unloaded at one of the numerous train depots that once dotted the landscape from Cowen to Erbacon. These stones were never picked up and sat at the depot for years. A couple days ago i heard the same story again, from a man who says they were unloaded at the depot near the mouth of Lost Run (there are about seven cemeteries located in this hollow). He claims to have played on these stones as a child and that they are still there, covered over with dirt. Nobody can remember the names or dates on the stones, or why they were never picked up. Were the stones unloaded at the wrong place? Did the families of the deceased move or die before the stones could be erected? Were the stones 'lost' and the monument company replaced them? A new family has bought the place where the stones are buried, and the man telling me the story thinks they may have uncovered one of the stones. He is going to check and see if he can find out a name and date. Wouldn't it be great to find these long lost stones and be able to finally place them on the graves where they were supposed to go many years ago?! Yet another errant stone is located on a farm above Halo. It is a mystery how the stone came to be there, the person telling me the story says that because of the position and location of the stone it was obvious that it wasn't marking a grave. All that was known about the stone was that there was a note that the person had served in the Spanish American War (1898). It should be easy to find out the name on this stone and there may be a record at the court house as to where the person is buried. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
