My great uncle, Clyde A. Weese, married Audree Yvonne Deel in Webster County in 1939. She later switched her first and middle name to Yvonne Audree. She died this past February in Columbus, Ohio. I always knew her as Audree and didn't know about the name change until after her death. Aunt Audree was the daughter of Willis Montgomery & Viola (Woods) Deel. Willis Montgomery Deel was the son of James Harvey & Elizabeth Susan (Dawson) Deel(sometimes written Deal). I don't have much information on James Harvey Deel. I have it in my notes that he was born about 1854(I think I took this information from the 1870 Census of Clay County). Clay County marriage records indicate he married Elizabeth Susan Dawson on March 8, 1876. My notes indicate she was born about 1850. Elizabeth was recorded in the 1920 Census of Glade District, Webster County West Virginia. Her name was recorded as Elizabeth S. Deal and she was listed as being 70 years old, widowed and born in West Virginia. 1920 Census indicates her father was born in Virginia, but mother was born in W. Va. I don't know how many children they had. But do know thay had at least two: Willis Montgomery Deel (see below) Hattie Deel, born about 1891 in Clay Co., WV. She was married to John R. Derberry, on March 21, 1908 in Nicholas Co., WV. John was born about 1888 in Tazwell Co., Virginia. Willis Montgomery Deel, born Aug. 11, 1878 and died in Webster Co. WV on Nov. 29, 1949. Willis married Viola Woods {Daughter of Van Cerenda (Hammond) Woods} on Jan. 4, 1911 in Webster Co., WV. Viola was born Nov. 20, 1889 at Dain, in Nicholas Co., WV and died Oct. 17, 1956 at Arcola, in Webster Co., WV. Both Willis & Viola are buried at the Adkison Cemetery, near Cowen, WV. I am uncertain if either Willis or Viola had been previous married. I am somewhat confused about their children, as the birthdates of the two older sons indicate they were born before Willis & Viola's marriage (perhaps an earier marriage or marriages). The Children: i. Edward W. Deel/Woods, born about 1904. The 1920 Census records his name as Edward W. Deel. However Viola's obituary records she had a son named Egbert Woods and I suspect Edward W. Deel and Egbert Woods are one and the same. ii. Ernest H. Deel, born about 1906. Viola's obituary records Ernest as her step son. iii. Delbert Deel, born April 22, 1911- died July 19, 1969. The 1920 Census recorded his name as Willis D. Deel. iv. Yvonne Audree Deel, born June 15, 1913 in Webster Co., WV. Died Feb. 17, 1998. She married my great uncle, Clyde A. Weese (1908-1988). Both Clyde & Audree are buried in the Adkison Cemetery near Cowen, WV. v. Arthur W. Deel, born about 1917. He married Emogene Tinger. vi. Argil A. "Joe" Deel, born Oct. 1, 1919 and died Oct. 24, 1986. vii. Arley A. Deel, born June 29, 1921 and died Aug. 10, 1993. viii. Zanna Sue Deel, born about 1922 and is still living. She married Mack Henline (now deceased). Zanna lives at Arcola (Rt. 2, Cowen, WV). I saw her and her daughter Sherry Holcomb when I was back in Webster County last week. iv. Eva Deel, born about 1924. She married a Bowen and lives at Columbus, Ohio. v. Donna Deel, married a Markley and lives at Columbus, Ohio. vi. Buddy Deel, made a career out of the army, and after his military retirement; moved to Columbus, Ohio where he still resides. Hi Otis, I know of a Kingfisher road in Webster County. Its a little bit east of Webster Springs on Rt. 15 over McGuire Mountain. Thats the only Kingfisher reference I know of. The land that is now known as Webster County was formed from Harrison, Kanawha,Randolph and Greenbriar counties prior to 1800 or so. Webster County was created in 1860....at one time the county even tried to become its own "state" . There is some documentation on the "The Great Independant State of Webster" in Sampson newton Millers book "The Annals of Webster County"1969. Wish I could answer all your questions. hello, Just signed on to Webster Co roots, as have found that my GGGGF Alfred SLUSHER was born in 1807 in a place called "Kingfisher, Va". After much searching have found the only Kingfisher ref within WV or Va to be the "Kingfisher schoolhouse" outside Webster Springs. This being said: 1. What is the source of the Schoolhouse's name? Does it pre-date the forming of Webster County? 2. Was there a "place" called "Kingfisher" on the land that is now Webster County? 3. What was the land that Webster County is now on called in 1807? My GGGGF is only known to be "Va born" in 1807! He was "first found" in the 1850 census in Hardy Co, Va-Wa, married w/children! Any info re a place called "Kingfisher" and surely any info on early 1800 SLUSHERs or SCHLOSSERs in the "area" would be very much appreciated.
