The following is some that I received from another list. It's cute but sadly its true in some cases. RE-WRITING HISTORY Lets say that your great-great uncle Remus Starr, a fellow lacking in character, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. A cousin has supplied you with the only known photograph of Remus, showing him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture are the words: Remus Starr: Horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison, 1895. Escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton Detectives, convicted and hanged, 1889. Pretty grim situation, right? But let's revise things a bit. We simply crop the picture, scan in an enlargement and edit it with image processing software so that all that is seen is a head shot. Next, we rewrite the text: Remus Starr was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and imitate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1885, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renown Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Uncle Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collasped. Now we give Uncle Remus a distinguished place inside the family tree, not hanging from it.
My maiden name is Cutlip and I am from Webster Country. All information is appreciated. Marlene Borgstrom
Hey - I am back off my many vacations and finished for a while. Now, I can get back to adding all this wonderful information to the Webster Co., WV page. It is easier for me to add items which come via e-mail since I can cut and paste the information right on to the page. Easy things I am looking for: cities, churches, schools, cemeteries, etc. If you live there a quick yellow page look up would do. Also, if you live in Webster and attend a church please let me know about the church, when established, directions, number of members, past pastors, does it have a church cemetery, who established it, scanned photo if possible, etc. Just some simple things to make it beefier. I am going to finish the 1860 census this weekend. I ordered the 1870 (presently have) the 1880-1900-1910-1920 are on there way and I will transcribe them too. I am sending to the census project and they will be on-line when I am done. I have several newspaper articles, cemetery records, obits, etc. to load too but my main goal is the 1860 census before I start working on those again. If anyone has anything to add which I don't have a link to please let me know. Right now I am having problems uploading to Rootsweb and can't figure out why - hopefully this will be resolved by this weekend. bj

Dear Members of the Webster County, West Virginia Mailing List, I have just joined the List today, with this message as my first posting. My mother, Sylvia Madaline MILLER, was born "up Grassy Creek", [Orndoff Post Office], about four miles north of Webster Springs, 29 Oct 1929, and graduated from Webster Springs High School in 1946. She is a daughter of Edward Curry MILLER [1875-1951] and Sarah Florence ARTHUR [1890-1985]. Sylvia Madaline MILLER moved to Fairmont after high school and worked for Westinghouse. She met Marvin Clifford COOPER in Fairmont, and they were married 15 Jul 1950. I was born 10 Nov 1951 in Fairmont, five days after the death of my grandfather Edward Curry MILLER. The MILLERs in my line have been traced back to the pioneer John MILLER, who arrived in what is now Webster County about 1800. My great grandfather Nathaniel Barnet ARTHUR [1844-1937] came to Webster County from Gilmer County, WV. I treasure the memories of family vacations to "visit Grandma" in Webster County when I was growing up: drawing water up from the well, exploring the hills out in back of the house, going squirrel hunting with my father, watching Grandma fry "'taters" on the wood-heated cooking stove, asking for a bowl of blackberries with "sweet milk" and sugar. I will post messages from time to time, adding details as I go. Please respond if you have information on the people or subjects mentioned in this message. My grandfather Ed MILLER was a real blacksmith, I'm told. I am very pleased to take this step of joining the Webster County Mailing List, and I look forward to new friends and maybe even cousins!
