    1. [WVWEBSTE] Hugh Bragg
    2. Sherri Brake
    3. Greetings to the list, I am posting information to the Webster list that others may find interesting. I was on the this list quite a few years ago but have been unsubbed for about 7 years or so. HUGH BRAGG Hugh was a young man of just 21 years old when he was convicted of the murder of Deputy Sheriff John Dennis Morton. Morton was an officer with the Webster County West Virginia police and was shot while serving a worthless check warrant on January 12th 1920. Hugh was known to be a friend of Sheriff Morton’s but had been drinking before the unfortunate incident took place. Perhaps Hugh’s misfortunate crime was the result of a youths impulsiveness combined with excessive alcohol. Sheriff Morton was a descendent of Edward Morton Jr., a Revolutionary War Veteran, and one of only three from the county of Webster. He was 32 years old and was survived by his wife and 4 children. Sheriff Morton’s brother rushed into the Webster County jail with a pistol and was intent upon murdering Hugh before he was taken to Moundsville. His pistol misfired and Hugh escaped death, if only for a short time. Hugh Bragg became inmate #10862 at the Pen when he arrived from Webster County, in January of 1920. He was sentenced on the 27th day of that month for the crime of murder and was executed 3 months and 3 days after sentencing was issued. His execution date was April 30, 1920. The Cumberland Maryland Evening paper had this to say about the event dated May 3rd, 1920: Cumberland Evening Times Brothers of victim saw Bragg Hang Witnessed by four brothers of his victim, Hugh Bragg was executed at 5:30 o’clock Friday afternoon in the West Virginia Penitentiary at Moundsville for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Dennis Morton, of Webster County, two months ago. Twelve minutes after the drop, life was pronounced extinct. Bragg, who was a legless youth, shot down and killed the sheriff at Cowan. He lost his legs in a railroad wreck near Grafton. 3. I am looking for information on my g-grandmother Lucinda Williams who died after 1892 and before 1900 in a house fire. The family story was my ggrandfather, Hugh and Lucinda Williams lived in a log home near Erbacon (sp?) when it caught fire and she and her infant child died in the fire. Is there any resources in Webster Co that might have information on this terrible fire and the deaths that it caused? Are there any Williams living in Webster Co. that may be "kin" to the Williams' found in Braxton Co. That was were my Hugh Williams originated as did Lucinda who was the daughter of William and Harriet Keener. Somehow I believe they are also related to the BENDERS that are found in Webster County. If anyone can help me or has information on the Williams or Benders I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Bev
