Jerry Dempsey > > Champaign Co., Ohio 43078 jdboyce@foryou.net Hello Jerry, I happen to have the book, "26th Battalion Virginia Infantry" by Terry Lowry. It was published by H. E. Howard in 1991. I checked the roster and your W. H. DEMPSEY is listed. "DEMPSEY, W. H.: Pvt. Co. B. Res. Monroe Co., W.V. D[ied] "some years ago in Summers Co., W.V." on early 1900's roster. Postwar roster only." Company B of the 26th Battalion Virginia Infantry was called Captain Edmund S. Read's Company. It was organized on April 29, 1862, composed of fellows from Monroe and Greenbrier Counties, and part of the former members of the 59t Virginia Infantry. "The group was used primarily for skirmishes and sharpshooters." One of the veterans of this company said it was organized in White Sulphur Springs and "was usually placed in front in battle". Hope this helps some.
