Hello Listers, I finally have some of my information together for my GIBSON / SMITH connections. Some of this information comes from some of you listers. There have been so many helpful replies to my message to this list that I will not try to list everyone individually. You know who you are and I have tried to thank each of you through private emails. I just wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful list this is and that I am very grateful to each you and for this list. Here is the information I have so far: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harrison Taylor GIBSON, b. ca. 1849. There are two notes on his month of birth - one says March 1849 and one says November 1849. LDS Internet information shows him as being born in Jackson Co., KY but Jackson Co. KY, was not formed until 1858 out of part of Clay Co., KY, so it is likely that he may actually have been born in Clay Co., WV. Harrison Taylor GIBSON's parents were shown to be from VA. Harrison GIBSON is listed in the 1870 Census Index of Clay Co., KY. Harrison Taylor GIBSON appears on Wayne Co., WV Marriage Records, Book 6, Page 515 as being from Pike Co., KY, age 46, marrying Rosa C. (Caroline/ Carolyn) SMITH, Wayne Co., WV, age 17. This record is dated November 9, 1898. Rosa Caroline SMITH GIBSON was born ca. September 1881 in Wayne Co., WV. She was the daughter of William Harrison SMITH and Martha Elizabeth DANIEL(S). Her maternal grandfather was William DANIEL(S). According to some of Rosa C. SMITH’s grandchildren who are still living, Rosa had many brothers and sisters. One of the grand-daughters had the SMITH family names written in her family Bible. Though these names may not be in birth order, their names as told to me were : John SMITH (who was a preacher) Carpenter SMITH Timothy SMITH Trenton SMITH Laura SMITH Charity SMITH Mary SMITH Geneva SMITH Lula SMITH Harrison Taylor GIBSON and Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON show up on the 1900 Census for Wayne Co., WV, Union District as follows: Harrison T. GIBSON age 50 b. Nov. 1849 KY Rosa C. age 18 Margie b. Feb. 1885 Odie b. July 1887 Ira b. Feb. 1890 Arthur b. April 1900 (April 28, 1900) I clearly recognize Harrison Taylor GIBSON, Rosa C. GIBSON and Arthur GIBSON listed in this census as our family. The older children listed here are most likely from a previous marriage though this has not yet been proven. When I first saw the age difference of Harrison Taylor GIBSON and Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON shown on their marriage certificate, I thought Harrison had probably been married at least once before Rosa. This was indeed the case according to the grandchildren with whom I spoke and who remember these people. These are the children of Harrison Taylor GIBSON from a previous marriage as noted in the Bible I mentioned earlier : Gracie GIBSON Margaret (Margie) GIBSON Lula GIBSON Bailey GIBSON As yet, I have no other documentation for these children except the family who knew them and the family Bible records. These names may or may not be in birth order. There may have been more children but if so, they are unknown to me at this time. In the R. L. Poke & Co.’s 1910 Huntington Directory, Harrison T. GIBSON is listed as: GIBSON, Harrison T., car repr C & O shops, h (which stands for "house"), RFD No. 2 There is also a Rosy GIBSON listed in this directory at the same address and a Taylor GIBSON at RFD No. 3. April 21, 1913. Fannie is buried at Lehart, OH, possibly as surname of HOOD (2nd husband) or OILER / OLIER (3rd husband) m. second to Nancy Elizabeth KEY, b. Dec. 25 1916, married April 12, 1938, Marion, Crittendon Co., AR 4 - Sybil Faye GIBSON, b. in WV, d. in Jameul, CA m. Christopher (Chris) FLOYD 5 - Lillian Jewell GIBSON, b. in WV m. ca. 1925-1927 to John SWAIN / SWAIM At this time, I do not have a date of death for Harrison Taylor GIBSON but am told he died in the Huntington, WV, area. After Harrison Taylor GIBSON died, Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON remarried to George WEETHEE / WITHEY, probably in the WV area. Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON and George WEETHEE / WITHEY had one child, a daughter: Margie M. WEETHEE Prior to his marriage to Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON, George WEETHEE had been married. To his marriage to Rosa, he brought the following known children from his previous marriage: Fern WEETHEE Ruby WEETHEE Byron WEETHEE Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON WEETHEE / WITHEY died ca. 1947 - 1957 in Huntington, WV. She is buried at either Springhill Cemetery or Woodman Cemetery. One of the sons of Harrison Taylor GIBSON and Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON, Elridge Ellis GIBSON and his wife, Fannie Lucille JOHNSON GIBSON, lived in an area of WV called Horselick, WV, in a three room cabin on the side of a steep hill. Elridge Ellis GIBSON worked at the locks on the Ohio River at Point Pleasant. Sometime shortly after the birth of their second child, ca. 1934, Elridge Ellis GIBSON joined the Army and was stationed at Camp Fannin, TX and also was in Panama City, Panama. He was in the First Calvary Division. I don't know which tour of duty came first. Somewhere along the line, Elridge Ellis GIBSON changed his name to Eldridge Ellis SMITH, giving himself his mother's maiden name. After their divorce, Fannie Lucille JOHNSON GIBSON married Tom HOOD, ca. 1944 and had other children with Mr. HOOD. After Mr. HOOD’s death, Frances (Fannie) Lucille JOHNSON GIBSON HOOD married a Mr. OILER / OLIER. At one point, she removed to OH with her husband and children and lived there until her death. She is buried at Lehart, OH. (Information for second marriage of Elridge / Eldridge Ellis GIBSON SMITH is previously listed in the section of children of Harrison Taylor GIBSON and Rosa C. SMITH GIBSON.) Family stories have it that the GIBSON home place in WV was at the edge of a cemetery which belonged to the family. They eventually sold the place and bought a brick house in town. One family member recalls a house on Railroad Ave. in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV. Family history also has it that this family has Native American ties through the tribes of the Cherokee, Blackfoot and possibly Lakota. None of the Native American ties have been proven to date. Some of the known geographic areas in WV, connected to the above families, their children and grandchildren are: Wayne Co. Cabell Co. Union District Kanawah Co. Huntington Konova Charleston Point Pleasant Horselick Cabin Creek Gallipolis Ferry The following information was found for a Harrison GIBSON : 1880 Jackson Co., KY Census #143 Sturgeon Pct. Harrison GIPSON 39 KY Betsy 37 Fleener 15 Hannah 12 Crittenden 10 Jackson 9 Brownlow 6 Mary J. 4 Lincoln 2 Henry MULLINS 25 Boarder Betsy is probably Elizabeth MULLINS. LDS records shows a Harrison GIBSON being married to Betsy / Elizabeth MULLINS, both of KY. This Mary J. age 4, may be Mary Jane GIBSON. I found a query on a Rootsweb page mentioning a Mary Jane GIBSON, daughter of Harrison GIBSON who married a MADDEN. These MADDENs and GIBSONs were all from Jackson Co., KY. See message at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Jackson?read+719 .) At first I thought this Harrison GIBSON who was married to Betsy (Elizabeth) MULLINS was the same Harrison Taylor GIBSON I am researching, Betsy being his first wife. I have since found several different Harrison GIBSONs in KY as well as WV, so now I am not so sure. The names of the children on this 1880 Jackson Co., KY Census do not match the names of the children on the 1900 Wayne Co., WV Census and neither match the names of the children known by our family to be Harrison Taylor GIBSON’s children by a previous marriage. However, with connections still being researched & proven, I don’t like to rule anyone completely out. ( Maps of KY counties during various time periods can be seen at: http://www.mindspring.com/~sixcatpack/kycounty.htm ). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have sent for documents and am waiting for them so I may have more information to add in a couple of weeks. If so, I will post an update. Please let me know if you have any information on any of the people listed above. Also, any suggestions for researching them is always welcome. Thank you.
