    1. Confederate Civil War Units in Wayne and Cabell Counties

    3. The men of one or more companies of the following Confederate units were predominantly from Wayne and Cabell Counties during the Civil War: 8th Virginia Cavalry 16th Virginia Cavalry 34th Virginia Cavalry 45th Virginia Infantry If I've missed one, please let me know. If you have a picture of your ancestor or relative in his uniform from one of these units (or one that I missed) or, better, a picture of the actual uniform, I would love to have a copy of the picture (either scanned and e-mailed or sent via regular US mail). If you have the uniform, PLEASE never sell it!! I know they can draw a pretty penny if sold, but it is so much more valuable to you and your descendants as a family relic that any price it brings cannot replace its value to your family! My great-great grandfather, Jesse O. BLANKENSHIP, was in the 34th Virginia Cavalry, and I don't even have a picture of him! I try to portray him through the uniform that I wear at certain living history events here in the MD/VA/PA/DE area, but I am only guessing at the uniform from those worn by the 34th VA Cav NSSA unit (the NSSA is the North-South Skirmish Association, an organization that is primarily interested in the weaponry of the Civil War). A picture might help me to obtain a better approximation to the unit my ancestor was in. 2 other ancestors of mine, Joel BARBOUR and Jacob SULLIVAN were also from the Wayne/Cabell County area and I have no idea about their service in the war, so I also try to portray a member of the 45th VA Infantry at reenactments of battles (I was fortunate to run into the man who played Col. Heth, commander of the 45th, in the big Gettysburg movie a few years ago and he gave me some tips on what uniform I should wear). My 4th great-great grandfather that was from the Cabell/Wayne area fought in the 5th West Virginia Infantry (note that, after 1863, the Union units formed in the Virginia counties that became West Virginia bear the name West Virginia in their unit when you are searching for records). Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give. Lee Taylor
