    1. Samuel J. Ferguson
    2. Good morning everyone....Jackie sent this to me and I think it might help some of you... Fran, I posted (2) Ferguson obits and someone had a question about Samuel J. Ferguson. I must have deleted it by mistake, for I was searching for more info to send as per the request. Last spring, an organization was trying to make sure that tombstones was on all Confederate graves. I just found part of the info that was out about Samuel J. & his brothers Abraham P. & Wayne P. Ferguson. All three are the sons of James and Mary "Polly" Bromely Ferguson. Abraham P. Ferguson b @ 1847 d 1943 at 96b yrs of age, buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, WV. He was in Co E 16th VA Cavalry. (There was an article in the Wayne Co News, 8/27/1972 about a letter he had written to his mother during the Civil War). Samuel J. Ferguson p b 1/27/1832 d 6/15/1903. He was in Co. K 18th VA Cavalry. He was a State Senator 1877-79 and a leader in the Democratic Party in the state of West VIrginia. Buried in Wayne Co on Big Branch Road, just off the East Lynn Road, across Two Mile Bridge. I believe it is enclosed by a stone wall (been awhile). Wayne P. Ferguson b 1843 d 3.17.1917, buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. He was said to have entgered the service at an early age as a "wagon boy". (I haven't been to the cemetery to see if he received a stone). I believe I read somewhere that James Ferguson owned slaves and was very sympathic to the Southern cause. Jackie

I'd like to jump in that hot water with you! I owe these people more than words can ever say. I have no West Virginia resources available to me and yet have several family lines in Wayne County (and am finding more connections all the time! I must be related to everyone in Wayne County by the looks of things! <G>) I'd like to add Sandy Thacker to that list and hope she returns soon. I'd also like to add that Steph (N2ANCESTRY) is THE BEST lookup volunteer I have ever encountered! She went unbelievably above and beyond my original request and entered into my search with an energy and excitement that made me feel as if my names were hers too! She gave me the most wonderful missing pieces - things I had believed I'd NEVER be able to find. She didn't let the research go by just responding to my initial request. She kept searching and searching and digging and digging and my debt to her is immense! All of the wonderful people you listed and the others on this list are amazing! I don't think any of us can ever hear enough "good news" so I, for one, am glad you wrote! It gave me a chance to add my thanks as well! Sincerely, Donna

    1. Sharing good news
    2. Dear Wayne Co family If you can't share your excitement with the same people who are doing the same thing you are then who are you to share it with? I'm sorry if this is considered to be off the subject but I am at home with several small children all day long. When i finally find that connection, that missing link, I am bursting with excitement and can't wait to share. Since quite a lot of what I have found is because of all the work and love that my felow listmembers bring to me everyday, I see this as the perfect place to express my joy and my gratitude. Since i mentioned gratitude , I might as well get in more hot water by saying that if it weren't for DOT,N2ANCESTRY,SIXCATPACK and so many others, I would be nowhere in my research and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could return the favors you have done for me. God bless all of you and I hope to hear that you have found your elusive ones real soon Sandi

    3. Jackie, Thanks for looking out for me. I really don't have any idea at all who I'm looking for. Mother always said that my dad's mother was Cynthia Harless. (I know her first name was Cynthia for sure) One of my Clay cousins said that she was the daughter of Jefferson McComas and Mary Jane Harless. But at any rate for me she is a total brick wall. I do know that she was born on Sept 18, 1883, married my grandfather, George Wilson Clay on June 20, 1900 and died on Sept 6, 1966. My father, Claude Wilson Clay, was one of their nine children. If any one can help with this mystery I'd appreciate it. ____ Lynda Davis-Logan <[email protected]> "ever so happy in beautiful Ona, WV" researching: Adkins, Ball, Blankenship, Brashear, Cain, Chaffin, Clay, Davis, Ferguson, Gillespie, Harless, Huff, Law, McNeeley, Mounts, Osborn, Sanders, Stowers, Trout, Tunnel, Wilson

    1. Re: [VAAUGUST-L] Apology
    2. Jennifer, I am so sorry for the hurt and pain that was inflicted on you by an asinine member of a list. This really upsets me because they critisized your for your lack of Netiquette!! There is no worse lapse of ANY etiquette, Net or other, that to openly down grade another human being on the public level. That is the rudes, most UNCOUTH thing a person can do. I can't understand these people that are complaining about minute things on the computer and taking up 10-fold more net space and time that the other person. To be honest, I would take the person on as not being a true genealogist at heart. These genealogy ignorant people would know that all good genealogists have got there by talking, and talking, and talking. We have to consider a large spectrum of related - or really unrelated information to cull out one good lead hopefully. It is time that we list members take a stand against these people to make sure-as best we can-that their hurt inflicting attitudes get nipped in the bud. We have got some that are going from list to list just trying to stir up a big load of c - - -! And believe me!! I have been anything but immune to it. I am not the type to sit back and take it or let "friends" or anyone take abuse of any sort without taking a stand. God made me this way and it' s too late to change now!! I was so sorry to hear of your father. My family has been "trying" to come to turns and cope with about the same situation. On April 21, 1998 my 23 yr.old nephew--who had been in the military and also got his degrees in computer technology. He could take a little space and make it into a spectacular component. He had a spat with a girlfriend and came in to the house. He talked to people about an upcoming movie on TV and he had just bought a new video game and had made a date with some people to try it out. My brother got up to go to work at 3:30am and saw his light on, his car was out front, so my brother opened the door of his bedroom and saw a leg sticking out of the closet. He had hung hisself on the closet rod!! My husband, being in law enforcement all of his adult life was the 1st one they called aftree EMS. The call came in and I knew it was about Little Joey but I thought it was definately a car accident. When my husband turned and said no and told me ... I just screamed and hit him yelling no!! no! We had all just been together a few hours before. They lived right down from us and across the street from my parents. We are still to this day beating ourselves up with the whys and what ifs. He left note, he gave none of the "usual" signs. Some say he might have been using nitrous oxide-laughing gas and as he was passing out, his right leg slipped out from under him and he was too far gone to be able to pull is self out. Just graduated college and had a good job at Jabil electronics and was in training as a supervisor. He had never married, just going for his goals. A minute never goes by that he is not foremost in my mind. I can't shut my eyes at night without seeing his smiling, laughing face. I will get in trouble for writing this but once I started and seeing about you dad just brought it all out. That is the way that most of us look at our other list members-- like they become our friends. We are all striving for the same things and can share so much!! 3. Sandy & Barbara on Giles list and Lynda on Wayne-- About 4 AM I ran across some old notes I'd not read in years. And this afternoon I find your queries about the same people. OOOOooooo twilight zone, or maybe just Halloween. Some Virginia Marriages by McDonald lists this French: Issac Edward, b. 4/13/1849, s/o Hugh and Rachel Frye m. Ann Dunbar 1850 Giles census Hugh C. 52, Rachel 37, Jehugh 22, James B. 20, Susannah 17, Rufus A 9. Daniell 7, Martha L. 6, Nancy 3, Isaac 1 These were taken from microfilm and I've noted that some of the children had another name totally illegible. Another note: Hugh and Levicie m 1-6-1820 and that they have a son William nd Hope this helps you 'cause it messes me! I've had Amanda Smith m Jehugh s/o Hugh. Since Amanda 24 (but her death info says she's 36 in 1859 which would make her 27 at this census) and Jehugh (John) E. 23 are listed in same census with their daughter Mary J. 1 he can't be s/o of Hugh. Anybody know a Jehugh born c 1827???? As to the French/McComas connections. The earliest I know of is Annie d/o Matthew and Sally Payne m Elisha McComas and went to border settlements. Annie's niece Cynthia d/o David and Mary (P0lly) Dingess m her son Judge David McComas McDonald's Some VA Marriages lists: Minerva Ann French b 18?? Giles? m Thomas Jefferson McComas. Could this be yours, Lynda from Florida now happy in WV? Sarah French b 1832 Pearisburg d/o Guy and Araminta Chapman m William McComas David and Polly Dingess French have a daughter Minerva said to have married Colonel Thomas Boyd. Happy Halloween everybody! Jackie

    3. Hi, all! Have recently joined this list but have been mostly lurking and reading. We just moved from S. Florida in August and are trying to get settled in our new home in Ona, WV. (For those of you who don't know where Ona is - it is just east of the Huntington/Barboursville area off of Rt. 60.) My mother and I have been researching our family lines since the late 1960s. Mother passed away in 1984 and I lost all interest for several years. Nine years ago I met a wonderful guy who was into computers and got me back into genealogy on the Web. Wow!! Mother would have loved it. She spent many, many hours writing and corresponding by s-mail and we spent 2-3 wks every summer doing research in WV/Ky/Oh/Va courthouses, libraries, etc. (You all know the routine!!) At any rate, all of this to introduce myself and to say that I will be able to do more researching since we've moved back to the Cabell/Wayne Co. area. Will eventually have more time as we get settled. The main lines that I'm researching from this area are: Mother - Thelma Ruth CHAFFIN b. Miller's Fork, Wayne Co., WV Father - Claude Wilson CLAY b. Martha, Cabell Co., WV grandparents - Jesse Hubert CHAFFIN b. Blaine, Lawrence Co., KY Ruby Marie BLANKENSHIP b. Miller's Fork, Wayne Co., WV George Wilson CLAY b. WV Cynthia Ann HARLESS/MCCOMAS (not sure which one??) b. WV gr-grandparents - Jesse Marion CHAFFIN b. Blaine, Lawrence Co., KY Clementine ADKINS b. Blaine, Lawrence Co., KY John Wesley BLANKENSHIP b. Miller's Fork, Wayne Co., WV Laura HUFF b. Trace Creek, Wayne Co. , WV James Loren CLAY b. not sure/possibly WV Mary Elizabeth CLARK b. " " Jefferson MCCOMAS ? Unknown gr-gr-grand- James Milton CHAFFIN b. Blaine, Lawrence Co. , KY parents Mary SANDERS b. Patrick Co., VA William Tolbert ADKINS b. Logan Co., VA Martha Ann ADKINS b. Logan Co., VA Francis Marion BLANKENSHIP b. Wayne Co., VA Margaret CROCKETT b. Wayne Co., VA Henderson HUFF b. VA Juda Ann FERGUSON b. Johnson Co., IN I am can go back many more generations on some of these lines and connect with alot of you who have been posting. I have more information on the following lines and will be happy to share what I have. (Hopefully, as I'm able I'll do more documentation through courthouse records. When Mother and I used to do research we noted where - such as County, but not volumes and page numbers.) Families: ADKINS/FRY - TONEY - GILLESPIE HUFF - FERGUSON - TROUT - OSBORN - NOE - PATRICK - BALL - TUNNEL - BRASHEAR - WILSON CHAFFIN - SANDERS - CAIN CLAY BLANKENSHIP - CROCKETT Would love to hear from anyone who is researching the same families and compare notes. My brick walls are: Edmund Osborn Tolbert Huff Sarah Mounts Wilson Joel Martin Ferguson Abraham Trout ____ Lynda Davis-Logan <[email protected]> "ever so happy in beautiful Ona, WV" researching: Adkins, Ball, Blankenship, Brashear, Cain, Chaffin, Clay, Davis, Ferguson, Gillespie, Harless, Huff, Law, McNeeley, Mounts, Osborn, Sanders, Stowers, Trout, Tunnel, Wilson
