Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted...We shouldn't. Does anyone ever get to the Crescent Hill Cemetery in Ceredo? I have family burried there and would be interested in who is there. I can remember going as a boy and cutting the grass. I know my Grandfather Elwood Woolary and Grandmother Eva Woolary are burried there but not sure who else. I would have WOOLARY'S, CHRISTIAN'S, SIEGLES and possibly a BRISON. Thanks for any help. I'm looking for others who are connected to my GG Grandfather, John Moody Farra, (b. Oct. 29, 1825 in VA) and his wife Mary Raines Farra (b. Mar. 7, 1834 in Tazewell Co., VA). They moved to the 12 pole area of Wayne County, VA/WV between the 1860 census of Tazewell County, VA and the 1870 census of Wayne County, WV. Apparently, he was given a land grant during the Western VA migration after the Civil War, because he served as a blacksmith during the war. His settlement covered a large part of what is now Dunlow, WV, near the entrance to Cabwaylingo State Forest off Highway 152. They are buried in the Preston Family Cemetery, 5 miles north of the Dunlow VFW on Highway 152 in Dunlow, WV, and their very nice gravestones are still standing and very legible. OBITS. BIG SANDY NEWS, Louisa, KY. Wednesday, June 2, 1999. LUCIAN J. FRASHER 1912-1999 Lucian J. Frasher, 87, of Fort Gay, West Virginia, died Monday, May 31, in St. Marys Hospital. Mr. Frasher was born April 4, 1912, in Fort Gay, a son of the late Jay Frasher. He was a farmer, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Bartrams Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Frasher of Fort Gay; two daughters, Linda Rose of Fort Gay and Karen Marcum of Michigan; one son, Randall J. Frasher of Fort Gay; two sisters, Wilma Ross Golf of Huntington, West Virginia, and Mary Elliot of wattsworth, Ohio; six step sisters, Wilma Wellman and Ramona Hatfield, both of Fort Gay, Elizabeth Ann Lambert of Mansfield, Ohio, Roberta Demalis of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Linda Stark of Huntington, and Ruth McCoy of Procterville, Ohio; two step brothers, Roy Michael Williams of Fort Gay, and Barry Allen Williams of Lawrenceville, Georgia; 11 grandchildren; six step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four step grandchildren. John M. Farra and his wife Mary E. Raines Farra gravestones have been found in Dunlow, Wayne County, WV in the Preston Cemetery. After being lost to the Winfield Washington Farra family (son of John M. and Mary E. Farra) for at least 50 years. The cemetery is about 5 miles north of the Dunlow Volunteer Fire Department on Highway 152. Inscriptions below: JOHN M. FARRA BORN IN Va. OCT. 29. 1825 DIED APR. 17. 1914 Stone still standing in the upper center of the cemetery above a stone mausoleum. MARY E. FARRA BORN IN Va. MAR. 7. 1834 DIED MAR. 27, 1909 Stone foundation no longer existed and the stone itself was lying face up on the ground beside John M. Farra's grave. There were no cracks on it at all. I stood her stone up and leaned it against the back of John's stone. Both stones were very clearly and professionally carved deep and very legible. My family plans to reset her stone to stand beside her husband, and decorate the graves. I have digital pictures of them is anyone needs them.
