Does Wayne Co Wv Have A Local Newspaper ? ANd Would It Have Been Operating In 1905 ?
You might also consider that the town of Ceredo has a very fine little historical museum of its own. There are numerous photos of residents there, many taken by a man whom I remember in his 90's (this was in the 1960's), riding his bike with a camera over his shoulder and shooting everything that happened there (Mr. Adkins). I'm sure the town would receive these gladly. David & Jayne Chafin

I can get you the info you need e-mail address of the Pres of the Soc.... etc... I'm in Huntington and have Family in Ceredo... (and Radford ;-D) I truely HATE to see old photos in shops for sale... ( One reason I took up Scrapbooking - My family will have a record!) Anyway... LET me know if you need more info... I HOPE that the photos find someone who will give them their rightful place in a family album ;-D Connie [email protected]
In 1996, I bought an old photo album at the Liberty Antique Mall in Bedford, VA. Before you delete this message, there is a connection to Wayne Co, WV. There is a typewritten note on a scratch of yellow paper that reads "Kyle Smith Family photo album. People not identified." inside the photo album. There are four photographs in this album, and as best I can tell, it's the same family. On the back of one of the pictures is written "W. Fred and S. Margarette Smith." This photograph was taken at Mt. Spring Gallery in Ephrata, PA, where J.W. von Nieda was the Proprietor. There is a second photo of these same two children when they were a few years older, taken by Central Gallery at Keller's Block, 17 1/2 E. Main St., Ephrata, PA. A third photo shows these same two children with their parents (I assume these are the childrens' parents--maybe Kyle Smith) and was taken at Central Gallery. The fourth shows these same two children at an even older age but now pictured with a younger child. This fourth photo was taken by McCaa at Keller's Block in Ephrata, PA. I would guess these photos to be late 1890's/early 1900's. Personally, I think they are in excellent condition. There are other photos in the album, but only one has any writing on the back. This one is of a man seated in a victorian chair, with a lady standing behind him. His arm is resting on a table. This one was taken by Handley at 948 Third Ave., Huntington, WVA. I can't read part of the writing, but what I can read says " West VA to ? (can't read name), I will send you the photographs of my family. Well I was at my P.A. all the month of April and also my wife. Ceredo Wayne Co., West VA" Someone has written the date May 9, 1900 on the back of the picture in ink, but I can't tell if they traced over a penciled version. The remaining photos were taken at various studios in Radford, VA; Christiansburg, VA; Salem, VA; and Roanoke, VA (which are all located in southwest Virginia); and at Blessing & Co., No. 46, N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD. If anyone can produce proof that you are related to W. Fred, S. Margarette, or Kyle Smith of Ephrata, PA area or the folks pictured in the Huntington, WV photo, I will consider giving you the applicable photos. If your intention is to sell them in a yard sale or at a flea market or sell them at or to an antique shop, don't even bother contacting me; I'll keep them. If there are no takers, I will probably give the ones taken in Ephrata to either the Historic Conservation Trust of the Ephrata Area or the Historical Society of Cocalico Valley. Does Wayne Co., WV have a historical society or museum? Please contact me privately if you think any of these folks are your relatives. Thanks for the bandwidth. Phil

Meredith b: 1868 Albert Dillard Meredith was born in Trigg County Kentucky. After he married "Belle" Dunaway in 1886 they moved to Kenova where my grandfather Leo Barnell was born. He was called Barnell by friends and family. The siblings I know for Barnell are: Bruns who was killed in WWI, Ed, Chris who married Olive ?Gilkerson, and Sallie. There are possibly more children. They lived on Beech St so I'm told. Albert died in Kenova in 1933. Belle died in 1936 but I don't know where. I live in Georgia so my WV research is very limited. LDS doesn't have filmed records for WV during that time. I know that Albert's parents names were John P Meredith and Martha Jane Johnson but I'm not sure if they were from KY or WV. If anyone has connection, corrections or info on this family I would love to have it. Till next time, Barb in Georgia

Could someone please tell me what county Rssll, Virginia, would have been in 1812? Thank you very much for your information. Jennie [email protected]
Does anyone have any leads for me about a David JOHNSON, old enough to have a 9 year old in 1850 and married to Elizabeth? Thank you, John, for straightening out my Richard and David dilemma. Thank you to anyone else who is able to help. Jennie [email protected]
We traveled to Wayne County for the first time this week and completely enjoyed the trip, the Pioneer Motel is a pleasant surprise and a great place to stay. The motel rooms are clean and nicely furnished. I will definitely return for more research. Have any of you heard of Gravel as a cause of death? This is what was listed for Hester Booth Shepherd, who died on Nov. 22, 1896, in Wayne County,WV., who supposedly died from drowning. After returning home, I have noticed another Shepherd, or Shepard, death on the same page in the register of deaths for Wayne County, who is a mystery person to me. This is what's on the page: Shepard Anna E. died Mar 23, 1911, Female, age 53 years and 23 days, Cause of death nervous, occupation Housewife married and the person giving the information was Harvey Shepard. Did Harvey Shepherd marry again after the death of Hester? Are there any other Booth or Shepherd researchers that could help me? I bought the books from Evelyn Booth Massie, which are excellent but have no clue to this Anna. Pat Shepard
Polly, Thanks for the reply and the excellent info. I am wondering, however, if John "uncle John to all" Jarrell's middle initial is "E"? John is such a common name. Even without the middle initial though I'm sure Uncle John is Rachell Jarrell's father because the man who performed the wedding ceremony for her and Albert Wellman was none other than Rev Wm. T. Ball. I am a bit confused about Uncle John's parents. You list them as Lazarus Damron and Jane Jarrell. Is it Lazarus Damron Jarrell? I'm assuming it is but if it is not then I'm assuming Jane was a single mom and John took his mother's name? Again, thank you so very much for the excellent info and providing me with the names of two of my ggg-grandparents. Sincerely Clyde P.S. If I can be of any assistance to you please let me know.
Can anyone help me with my dilemma? I have a Richard M. JOHNSON b. 18 Jan 1843, m. 25 Oct 1865 to Elizabeth Jane SHANNON. Richard died 18 Sep 1908. On their marriage license it states Richard's parents as David JOHNSON and Emily CYRUS. I haven't found any information about David and Emily except they died young. Richard was living with Philip HATTON and wife Jane (CARTMILL) in the 1850 Wayne County Census. David's parents were Eclattis JOHNSON, Sr and Frances NEWMAN. I found an Eclattis JOHNSON in the 1850 census who was 33 years old. I did not find a Frances NEWMAN. Eclattis' father John JOHNSON was born in 1788. Where did I go wrong? Elizabeth Jane SHANNON's parents were John SMITH and Martha Ann HATTEN. Any help as to why the 3 would have different last names? Are there any family members out there who have sorted this out and could help? I would appreciate any enlightenment on this branch of our family tree. Jennie [email protected]
