Gabriel T. HOUCK may have died at the VA Hospital in Wayne County in 1954 (plus or minus one year), according to his grandson. I would happily pay for a copy of the death certificate and/or an obituary notice if anyone would be so kind. Gabriel is my Great Great Uncle. Additional information: Gabriel T. HOUCK, b. 1878, was married at least three times. At the time of Gabe's marriage to Florence WHITE (1915) the marriage record stated that both he and his bride were residents of Cabell County, WV. Gabe and his family lived at 1845 Railroad Avenue, Huntington (Kyle District) , WV from at least 1933 through at least 1940 as this was the address listed on his infant daughter's death record (1933) and his wife Florence (WHITE) HOUCK's death record (1940). However, Gabe was not listed in the Huntington WV 1945 City Directory and therefore had either moved or died before 1946. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hello, Everyone: I am writing to announce my latest (and LAST) comprehensive Civil War page, The First West Virginia Cavalry. Soldiers of this regiment were recruited from western PENNSYLVANIA, eastern OHIO and WEST VIRGINIA. This regiment is of importance to me because my husband's gr-gr-grandfather , ALEXANDER HOBACK of WAYNE COUNTY, was killed in battle while serving. Alexander Hoback was also the great-grandfather of pilot, CHUCK YEAGER, a native of Lincoln County. There are about 350 UNCLAIMED Civil War medals in the West Virginia State Archives that were issued for 1st WV Cavalry soldiers. This is incredible and I am thinking it is possibly because descendants may not know to look for their Ohio & Pennsylvania ancestors' Civil War service in West Virginia. I have chosen to put the files in the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society space but they will be linked from my other pages (Marshall, Calhoun & Pleasants County WVGenWeb) , as well. I invite all of you to add a link from your own homepage or county GenWeb page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvwags/1wvc/1wvc-frm.htm << <<First WV Cavalry The "cover" is an original drawing by a descendant of a 1st Cav soldier. In addition to the roster, histories, pension files, etc., contents will include photos and information from the vast Civil War collection of Dave Aeberli of Pittsburgh, also a descendant of a 1st WV Cavalry soldier. And, in the same format as my 12th WV Infantry page, there will eventually be a page for each of the 1000+ soldiers. I have info on quite a few already and I invite you all to submit pension files, photos, bios, etc. The ROSTER contains the links to the individual soldiers' pages - - This is a very large file and if it is too slow, I may have to consider splitting it up. Also, I have become a collector of WV Civil War items, so please contact me if you have anything you would like to sell. Thanks very much! SLC: The first informal Catholic Masses were held at the home of Thomas CAROLL, who was b in IRE and came from Baltimore to Guyandotte VA/WV Nov 2 1852. No formal Parrish was formed until 1872 and called St. Peter's under Father Thomas M. QUIRK and formed a school and church. In 1874, he built the St. Joseph Parish which is still located at 8th and 20 St. Other church traning facilities were added over the years. In 1934 a new parish was erected and called Sacred Heart of Jesus in the western part of the city. A colored parish was also established in 1935 and called Fathers of the Precious Blood. Two other works, the defunct St. Edwards College and the prospering St. Mary's Hospital and ajacent educational facilities for nursing. (This is still there and is major hospital of Huntington). I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who responded to my earlier apology regarding the Archives. You have all been SO supportive!!! It really means alot to me. I would have preferred to answer you all individually, but there were so MANY responses!!! I did want to answer a couple of questions that I received though. Yes, I do take care of the archives on a volunteer basis, and I continually stretch myself to take care of as many counties as I can because I, like you, want to make sure that new files do continue to be uploaded and that the counties are cared for. Sometimes I have the time & energy to do a fantastic job updating the pages on a timely basis, and sometimes, I just don't have what it takes. But all in all, I love taking care of the Archives and watching them grow. I think it's a wonderful way to volunteer my time & hope I'll be able to continue to do so for a very long time. I have completed the uploads for July, minus a couple of small changes that need to be made and also minus the scanned documents. My next goal is to complete those & then I'll move on to the new files received in August. Then I will send notification to the individual county lists for all the new files uploaded during July & August. After that, I will start work on organizing some new counties that I have adopted. Once those pages are updated, I'll subscribe to the mailing lists for those counties & notify the folks there that the counties now have a new archivist who will TRY to post new files on a timely basis :) I'm sure those folks will be happy as I don't believe those counties have had anything new posted in quite some time. Once again, thanks so much for your support and all your kind words!!! It's good to know that there are real people out there (and nice ones too!) that are benefiting from my time & effort. Thanks again, you're the best!!!
