3. As you enter the front of the Upshur courthouse, the County Clerk's office is on the left. Go in door, then thru the swinging gate on right, turn left and you will see the vault on the right where all the records are kept of land, birth, death, etc. The Circuit Clerk's office is on the right of the front door of the courthouse just past the stairs. You can't miss them and the doors are labeled. Have fun. Jean

    3. Anything that ended up in court. There is a drawer, actually 2, that lists all the cases and believe me there is nothing like a juicy land battle to give you all kinds of family information. The Loudin family in 1853 had a doozy and I proved all kinds of relationships and saw written out land agreements, etc. These are in the boxes around the room. Don't just check your last name, if you are brave, check State of West Virginia vs whoever. I found a horsethief on my side, but not direct kin. 3. I was there last week and the workers were sweet as pie. I was in the county and the circuit clerks offices both. They will make copies and smile at you while they do it. All I asked was how to get to the vault where the records are and I was given a guided tour even tho I didn't ask for one and I hated to tell the lady I didn't need one because she was being so nice. Parking can be a problem, there is a municipal lot down behind the courthouse, but we found a place on the main street and there are not even parking meters. Only one complaint, the restroom is on the second floor next to the courtroom and that is a big climb. Go before you go in to research is my advice. Jean

    3. I am hoping to get to Buckhannon soon and was wondering if the employees were "research friendly"? I've never had it happen to me but I have heard of other researchers visiting a Courthouse (not Upshur) and being treated very rudely by the employees. Does anyone know the County Clerk's hours? Any comments or suggestions? Thanks, Cathy

    2. I thank so many of you for your information on Hinkleville and the cemetery where I will find Elbridge Burr. I have found the following website that has a formula to help in determining the birthdate of an individual from the death date and age at date of death. I tried it and it worked! Determining Date of Birth from Date of Death and Age at Death http://www.rootsweb.com/~hcpd/formula.htm

    2. Hi, Barbara. Hinkleville is in Upshur County about halfway between Buckhannon and French Creek. Ebridge BURR, who died on 15 June 1890 at the age of 68 years, 8 months, and 15 days, is buried in the Pleasant Dale Cemetery. There are a few BRAKEs and a BUNCH of CUTRIGHTs in the same cemetery. If you need to know how to find the cemetery, let me know. Buzz Brake Tacoma, WA
