You can search the original Va. Land Grants for all of Virginia, which includes WV prior to the Civil War. I found land grants for my Hezekiah Dunn, James Covalt, and John Rice. Here's the site: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ Just scroll down the page to: Digital Library Program (Image Databases) and click on that, then scroll down that page and click on Land Records, then click on Land Office Patents and Grants Index, then click on Land Office Grants, and follow the directions from there.
