Mr. Preston was 73 years old and perhaps no man engaged in the oil industry had a wider acquaintance among operators, more particularly the old guard who became identified with the business in its early days. For the past 20 years he had residedin Washington and as one of the first to embark in the development of the ter-ritroy in that county. Prior to that time he had operated in the Western Pennsyl-vania fields and was very successful. Of late years he had not taken an activepart in development work, but had given his attention to his oil properties in Washington County, in which he was associated with W.C. McBride, formerly of that place, but now a resident of St. Louis. Mr. Preston was generous to a fault and was highly esteemed by all of his acquaintances. His genial nature made him one of the most companionable menand in his death the oil industry loses one of its men of greatest integrity. Mr. Preston was born in Rochester, N.Y. and engaged in the oil industryin Butler County in 1861. He followed the trend again to the southwest insoutheastern Ohio and West Virginia. In his day he was one of the most dar-ing operators and never hesitated to back his convictions to the limit. Mr. Preston never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia A.Granger and Mrs M. Dodd, both of Rochester. Mr Preston was a devoutCatholic and the funeral services were held at the Church of the ImmaculateConception, Washington, Pa., this morning. The body will be taken toRochester, N.Y., where interment will take place Friday morning.
