Just as a little addition to this post. There is a list where this kind of data can be sent. SLAVEINFO. A moderated mailing list for the sharing of genealogical data about slaves in the Unites States including wills/deeds that show sales and transfer of ownership, vital records (e.g., birth, marriage, death), and information/queries on specific slaves that may be part of your ancestry. Anyone with genealogical data on slaves is welcome to post this information and thereby share it with all of the list subscribers. You must be a subscriber to post to the list. To subscribe send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to slaveinfo-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or slaveinfo-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode). I didn't ask Valerie if I could forward, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind. I think think this is a great idea, and if we all start really checking our "wills", and etc., we can find all kinds of pertinent info. I know I have, and have found some info I passed over originally, or didn't find important to anyone but the line I was working on, that just might help someone. Hope I haven't stepped over "the line" concerning this, but we are always saying that "genealogy is the art of helping others", and we usually are re-paid ten-fold, aren't we? I realize this is a touchy subject but unfortunately a lot of slave info was destroyed. Even headstones of slaves and African Americans were removed from graveyards. It's a sad, sad story but neither you nor I participated. > > Please, if you come across any mention of slaves, free African Americans, multi-racial (German or Indian mixes), or Mulattos, keep me and other researchers in mind and pass the information on. Looking for information on THEOPHILUS LAWSON who is listed in 1830 Census of Tyler Co. Does anyone have any early land records or birth records for children of that surname? Ed Oldaker
Hello, In reguards to the GORRELL line - there is a Tyler Co Museum Genealogy Room and I noted that the GORRELL file was way too small for their numbers residing in Tyler Co. If any one has info they care to share please contact me and I can get an address to you. Also connected to Gorrell, Smith, Wagoner & Morgan lines-- Lil
I had a response from this list from a person who offered to copy Garrison information from Leckey's "Tenmile Country-" and I deleted the message accidentally before I could respond privately. I have a copy of the book, which gives fairly accurate information about most of the Garrisons except my 4th great grandfather, Leonard Garrison. It says that Leonard was born in Scotland in 1757, but implied that he may have been related to Frederick Garrison, who was a German immigrant. Guess Leckey didn't think that one through. Actually, Leonard was probably born in NJ in the 1740's, while his older brother Frederick was probably born in Germany in the 1730's. Leckey assumed that the Leonard Garrison who Frederick shared a patent with was his son, also named Leonard; actually, the Leonard and Frederick who purchased the "Friendship" tract were the above-mentioned brothers, as estate information reveals. The connection to Tyler County is Leonard's son David, who moved to Tyler County in 1860. Some of Frederick Garrison's children and grandchildren are found in the early records of Tyler County; they lived in part that later became Wetzel County. Brian Brian D. Core P.O. Dear LIVEDLONG, Would be interested in your people who married into the GORRELL family. I have connections to that line from several branches. It has to be one of the largest Trees in Tyler Co. For many years I knew of six and thought it was an uncommon name. Now I know it must hold some kind of an outstanding number of family members who settled, married, gave birth and lived and died in Tyler Co. Anybody ever checked? Thanks for writing, Lenore
I am researching the Underwood family. My connection with Tyler County is through Harvey T. Underwood, brother of Silas and uncle of Governor Cecil Underwood. I have already been given a lot of help by several members of the list and I really appreciate the breakthroughs that you have given me. Frank Underwood
I have some Gorrells from tyler county in my background It seems they married some Doaks
Hi, My Tyler County Ancestors start with John W. Whitsett, MD, who married Eunice Moore in 1905 in Friendly. John Whitsett was from PA, but Eunice Moore, my grandma, has a long line of Tyler Co. relatives. Thomas Moore (1852 Tyler Co.-1929 Cleveland, OK) married 1875 Sarah Covalt (1857 Tyler Co.-1936 Cleveland OK). John W. Moore (1802 Greene Co., PA-1891 Tyler Co., PA) married about 1823 in PA, Mazy White (1807 Greene Co., PA-1875 Tyler Co.) James Covalt (1820 Marshall Co.-1909 Tyler Co.) married 1843 in Tyler Co, Mariah Rice (1825 Monongalia Co.-1895 Tyler Co.) I'd be more than willing to share any and all info, as I'd like to find cousins, close or not. I'd also like to "fill out" what I have on these families. Susie
