In 1875 he married a Lucinda Holt. At that time he was 36 and a widower. His first wife's name was Sarah, but not completely sure if her last name was Hamrick or Newlon. Family records have shown it to be Hamrick but census reports show a Jeremiah Bircher married to Sarah Newlon from eastern Virginia. One of his children, Elizabeth, married John Shingleton in 1903.
