I'm trying to find any information on my great, great grandfather, John Washington Durvin. He was born in Louisa Co. VA abt. 1820. He married Mary Catherine Gunnell in 1841 in Louisa Co. I can find him and his wife in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in VA. He was a Confederate veteran and his widow applied for a pension in 1902 in Hanover Co. VA. She stated in her application that her husband had died in Hinton, WV 'on or about' 22 June 1893. She also states that she has been living in Hanover Co for the past 8 years - or starting in abt. 1894. I assume that she and her husband moved to WV sometime between 1880 (when they were living in Hanover Co.) and 1893 when John W. Durvin died in Hinton. John was treated by a Dr. S. P. Peck of Hinton. I contacted the Summers Co. WV clerk of the court and they had no death certificate for John W. Durvin in 1893. They may have searched for the wrong time period (?) or looked for the wrong name - his wife used the surname 'Dervin" when she applied for the pension (rather than Durvin). Since they may have moved to WV, there may be land/deed records or other records about them. And if he died in WV, his body may have been transported to VA for burial - so some permit for transporting his body may exist. I would appreciate any help or leads about where to look for information/documentation. Thank you in advance. William Durvin.
I did some looking at death records (on line) for John Durvin and had no luck. However, I did locate the death of a Durvin baby girl born and died Apr. 17, 1896 at Hinton, Summers County. Parents names were not given but the birth/death was reported by April Johnston. She may or may not have been a neighbor. I will go back and check the records for any possible Durvin marriages but this was the only death I was able to locate.
