Hello Fellow Researchers: I found information that Jackson McDonald Farley served in Co. D, 17th Reg VA Calvary Militia Service, McCausland's Br. I have been trying to locate more information on this. I can not find him as a soldier in this regiment (confederate?). Would love to hear from someone. Karen: most larger libraries may have "The VirginiaRegimentalHistories Series" books. 17th Virginia Cavalry by Nelson Harris Copyright 1994 ISBN-1-56190-062-1 page 69 "Farley, Jackson Private, Co D; enl 2/23/62 in Mercer County; absent, horse detail 10/31/63; absent, sick 10/20/64." previous is from the roster listing. I did not read thru the earlier 60 page text of battles etc for the 17th to see if he was mentioned elsewhere as many are in the narative. In Miller's 'History of Summers County,' Copyright 1908, we find on page 213 under the listing 'Confederate soldier's of Jumping Branch District:' "Jackson Farley, 17th Va. Cav., McCausland's Br" Based on the above, although I have not run the cd to verify, I am sure you would also find 'Jackson Farley' listed in Jack L. Dickson's book "Tattered Uniforms and Bright Bayonets: West Virginia's Confederate Soldiers." originally 1995, copyrighted second edition 2004. In "A New River Heritage Vol II" by Wm Sanders Copyright 1992 page 168 speaking of River Ridge Cemeteries he lists "Jackson Farley, Company D, 17th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army (No Date).' Note: The 17th Virginia Cavalry was Col. Wm H. French's regiment: most of the area members of ten Mercer County Confederate companies of recruits belonged to Col. W. H. French's organization or to his brother, Napoleon French's organization (30th Virginia Cavalry), which was captured and split up and part of which was called 'French's Sharpshooters." [my note: these are regiments; General McCausland was a Brigade commander.] I don't know if it is the same Jackson but in Wm Sanders Vol III page 173 in a chapter on Farley/Cook families I find "Andrew Farley (Dinah)--Malinda, Wilson, Joel, Jackson, Ida, Mary, Anna, Thomas, Savina, James, Melvin -71 children." I assume this is a list of the children for Andrew Farley & Dinah Cook, daughter of Daniel Cook, and that among their 11 children they had 71 children (or grand children of Andrew). Hope this helps........Let me know please.
