Shumate, owned the Mercer Salt Works and nine hundred acres after the civil war, and was later the postmaster at Pipestem. He is buried at the Pipestem Neely-Ellison Cemetery, together with his three successive wives, Lizzie Holroyd, Melissa Huff, and Alice Skaggs." No mention of a Judith Meador as wife. Lizzie is a nickname for Elizabeth and possibly that is the "J. E." you want to identify. You also mentioned a daughter but show last name as Farley not Shumate, married?. ________________________________________________________________________ Note: [everything written is also subject to errors] -on page 189 of Vol II in grave stones listed it says: B.P.Shumate ("Bal") "Born Bluff City, Va., Dec. 10, 1842 Died Athens, W.Va., Mar. 11, 1915" MELISSA Shumate "Died Jan. 11, 1901 35 yrs., 4 months and 1 day." JUDITH Shumate, "wife (1st) of B.P.Shumate Died 1892" Note: B.PShumate's third wife, Alice, outlived him. An urn at the foot of Ballard Shumate's grave is inscribed "ALICE". _________________________________________________________________________ There are thirteen page references indexed for Ballard P. and I have not read them all yet. Many, many, many Shumate entries in the first three Volumes [there are 5 in all] concerning this family. I believe this may be the cemetery across the road from the old Pipestem Post Office on Rt 20 where Ballard P. was postmaster. Shumates mentioned. (1)-1842-1915. (2)-1880-1946 and (3) a son of #2 listed but no age given.
