Hi, From July 9 to July 16, I will be in Hinton, WV (Summers County). Staying in a cabin in Bluestone State Park. I have no known ancestors from this county and love to do genealogy research. So, I am offering to do look up's for source documents - if someone will tell me where the courthouse is and procedures. Please - I will need specific look up's, such as dates and names of birth, marriage, death, will ect. I make no promise that I will find anything and only have about 4 to 5 hours to send (while husband is playing golf). I have a digital camera - if you want a picture of something it must be close to Hinton and I will need directions. All I will ask in return is the cost of copying and mailing. My time is free. Happy Hunting, Kathie Mirabella Freehold, NJ
From Bluestone State Park, you will exit left on to WV 20 and proceed toward Hinton. As you head to Hinton, you will pass the Bluestone Dam on your right. In a short time, you will come to a bridge across the river but I believe you should continue another couple of miles to another bridge. After crossing the river there, take the first right for one block and then another right. The large red brick building on your left is the court house. There is usually ample parking around court house square, although most of it is metered. In the court house, go to the County Clerk's office, on the first floor, and tell one of the three or four ladies there that you wish to examine official documents. You will be escorted to the records room and if the Clerk or assistant clerk has time, she will offer further assistance. The will also photo-copy documents, for a fee. Conrad Miller. Hi Kathie: I had hoped to get to Hinton myself this summer but don't know if I can make it. I have a particular problem that I am hung up on. My great-great-grandfather was Madison C. Meadows (not to be confused with a Madison D. Meadows of about the same age who lived in Summers County as well). I cannot locate Madison after 1874 (when he supplied information for the marriage of his son Nathaniel R. Meadows). Madison's wife was Mary Ann Garten Meadows. If you can find anything about their deaths I would appreciate it (they are in the 1870 census). Madison was born about 1834/1836, as was Mary Ann Garten. Anything at all would help (I don't necessarily need copies of paperwork, just information, but I am happy to pay you for your services). The courthouse is in an old large red brick building; I am not sure of exact street address but I can find it if you need it. Thanks for the offer to help. I can probably email you a picture of the courthouse; I think I took photographs of it the last time I was there. Let me know if that would help and I will see if I can find them.
