    2. Melinda Jacquier
    3. Hello, I am looking for anyone who might have a photo or know who I might write to get one of Thomas Garner Lowe, his wife Sarah Elizabeth "Susan" Beckner Lowe and their family. They had 12 children, many who stayed in the Monroe and Summers county areas. Their children were: Josephine Lowe Noble Nina Lowe Foster Amanda Lowe Keatley John W. Lowe Matthew A. Lowe James E. Lowe Rosa Lowe Thompson Lura Lowe Canterberry Finley P. Lowe Thomas W. Lowe Charles L. Lowe Webbie M. Lowe (died as a young boy) Thank you for any help or suggestions anyone may have. 1. [WVSUMMER] Joseph W Tyler
    2. William Reed
    3. Walker Tyler was apparently listed in 1900 Census as Joseph W. Tyler (b. April 1837), with wife Susan (b Dec, 1844). They had been married 35 years and 8 of 12 children still lived. With them were children: Harry, Pearle, and Luther. With them also was son in law, Elder Dixon (smudgy). I gather from West Virginia Death Index that mother of Pearle Tyler (a male) was Susie Viar. Does anyone know of Harriet Susan Viar or Susan Harriet Viar marrying a Tyler? If so, where? Bill

    1. [WVSUMMER] Walker Tyler and William C Ridgway in 1870s in Hinton
    2. William Reed
    3. I would like to know origin of Walker Tyler who with William C Ridgway was one of firs settlers of Hinton, WV (formed about 1871). Miller's "History of Summers County" tells that Walker Tyler was employed by railroad and that he died about 1907. Walker Tyler was apparently listed in 1880 Census as James W. Tyler, with wife Harriet Susan and with children: Charles E., Ida, Lou, Florence, Harry, Hattie, Grace, and Allie Gertrude. Strangely enough, Walker Tyler was apparently listed in 1900 Census as Joseph W. Tyler (b. April 1837), with wife Susan (b Dec, 1844). They had been married 35 years and 8 of 12 children still lived. With them were children: Harry, Pearle, and Luther. With them also was son in law, Elder Dixon (smudgy). Apparently widow Susan H Tyler was listed in 1910 census alone. I am interested because William C Tyler took in (and possibly adopted) a Tyler boy (probably named George Tyler), b. 1872. Ridgway raised the boy as Charles Ross Ridgway. Charley Ridgway was my great - uncle. I suspect that Charles Ross Ridgway was related somehow to Walker Tyler. William C Ridgway was a Confederate veteran, a hotel owner. He probably came from Franklin County or Amherst County Virginia. Thanks, Bill

    3. Mr. Davis, While I do not know who this soldier's family is, I have a couple of suggestions of places you might check for more info that could lead you to living relatives of Mr. Maddy. Somewhere on his actual military records should be a social security number. If you can get that, you can request a copy of his application and that should list his parents names. With that info, you could check the 1930 census and see if he had any siblings. (I did check the 1930 census for an Allen Maddy born in 1923 but only found one in Arizona-not sure if that would be him or not.) Another suggestion would be to look at the Hinton newspaper for May or Aug of 1951 and see if there is any mention of him in there that would give a clue as to his parentage or siblings. (May and Aug 1951 were the dates, according to Ancestry.com military records, that he was injured and captured). You might even check into Sept. because news probably traveled slowly in those days. Thank you for serving our country and for what you are doing now. Sound like sad but fascinating work. I have a son (in the Utah Army National Guard) being deployed to Afghanistan next year. 3. Mr Davis and others. I do not live in Hinton but have used the library files before. They have a surmname microfilm file where articles and obituaries are recorded for local families. If someone in the area could check that it may be a shortcut to any newspaper article if it made the Hinton papers. [Mr Davis in case you do not know that is the county seat] I spoke with a MADDY in Hinton a few minutes ago and he checked a book from the '40s "Us Maddys" but no luck. He found one Allen (no dates), a child of George Washinton Maddy but Georges 10th child was born in 1881 so I doubt he had another in 1923. {Other poss: Maybe that Allen had a junior} Vernon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melinda Jacquier" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 4:40 PM Subject: Re: [WVSUMMER] Lost Soldier from Summers County, W.VA > Mr. Davis, > While I do not know who this soldier's family is, I have a couple of > suggestions of places you might check for more info that could lead you to > living relatives of Mr. Maddy. > Somewhere on his actual military records should be a social security > number. 3. John D. Cox was a son of John D. Cox, Sr. and Julia Dubois. John, Sr. was born in Virginia about 1790 but I have never been able to trace his ancestry any farther back and have never seen it documented by anyone else. The first documentation I have seen of him is his marriage bond in Monroe County, dated 22 May 1820. I have also never found or seen any documentation as to the exact date of birth of John D. Cox, Jr. I see the July 16, 1822 date all over the internet but as far as I know no documentation exists to support that exact date (does anyone have it?). Various census and other records place his birth in the 1821-1823 range. I am a direct descendant of John D. Cox, Jr. but not through the male lines. His granddaughter, Lilly Belle Victoria Cox (daughter of James Lewis Cox), was my grandmother. 3. Was he a Dr.? There was a Dr. William Lee Maddy, s/o Alexander, born 5/16/1842, but died Aug. 28 1909. He had gone to Texas, so perhaps that is where he died. He married twice, divorced his 1st wife in 1874 (don't have aname), and marr. 2nd to a Canterbury, with home he had 3 children This was taken for the Monroe Watchman August 13, 1970 page 2. There is also a picture of William Lee Maddy. Copy on file at the Charleston Archives Micro-film. William Lee Maddy born May 16, 1842 and died August 28, 1909, en;listed June 8, 1861 in Lowery's Battery and exchanged to Thurmond Company on March 24, 1864 and promoted to 1st. Lt on Nov 14, 1864. He is buried at a small family Cemetery on the Old Maddy Farm, one mile east of Ballangee, with a marble marker. He was the son of Alexander Maddy, he William was 1st married to a young lady which two daughters were born (no names given). This marriage ended in a divorce in 1874, he then married Miss Cantiberry. Immediately after this marriage he emigrated to Texas. He was a steam boat Captain and no doubt practiced his dentistry while serving as a steam boat captain. There were two sons born in Texas, Elmer Maddy born July 21, 1877 and lived near Lindside, Monroe Co, but died in a rest home in Virginia. the other son Jay Maddy born Sept 29, 1879 lived with his father until his death and then inherited the Maddy Farm, which he sold in 1926 and moved to Covington, VA., where he died in 1942. and was buried in the Maddy Cemetery on the Maddy Farm in Monroe Co, WV. In summer of 1882 Dr. Maddy started with his family by wagon from Texas back to Monroe Co and on the journey a 3rd son was born Lee Maddy born Sept 16, 1882, the mother died during this birth and was buried bye the roadside as was customary in those pioneer days. Lee went to Michigan at a early age. On his return to Monroe County, Dr. Maddy bought a tract of land from his brother Wilson Maddy. The Children were places in the homes of neighbors until there was a house erected on the Maddy Farm. Dr. William Maddy later started a nursery in which he grew apple trees. He planted about 30 acres in apple trees He was also involved in other dealings in Monroe and Greenbrier Counties. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Melinda Jacquier Sent: Friday, August 17, 2007 12:25 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: [WVSUMMER] William L. 2. Dear Vernon and Betty, Thank you for responding. Yes, we have seen the spelling different ways but this is the same person. A. A. Hopkins was a distant relative of mine. I got to know a lot about him through Oswald and Dale neeley, whom Alonzo lived with while he wrote the book. Understand Oswald has passed, sorry to hear that. Good people. What was your gggrandfather's name, Vernon? What cemetery? I have tried to find out more about the Company 1, Sixtieth Regiment, but not much success. Some of the old units had a group photo taken, but I was told the book on the sixtieth had no group photo. When and if the weather cools my uncle and me are coming back to Mercer and Summer Counties for some more searching. Sure wish we could hear from some Farley family members. You probably saw what I wrote and want. Good Hearing from you, Keep in contact. Thank you, Glenn D. 3. Levi Farley and my gggfather, Simeon D. Hopkins, went through their entire Civil War together. Both enlisted in April 1862, at Princeton, WV under; Capt. White G. Ryan's Co. I, Sixtieth Regiment, VA infantry, CSA. Both fought and were captured in the Battle of Piedmont, VA, POWs in Camp Morton, IN and released on prisoner exchange from City Point, VA. Simeon died on the way home at Elgood, WV. The reason I want to find some of Levi Farley's descendants is that Levi Farley lived on from 1865 when my gggfather died with him until 1888. Surely, he passed many a story including my gggfather and each generation had at least one Farley who kept up the Oral History tradition. I want to find these Farley's and see if they can tell me some of the old stories handed down through their generations. If you know of any Farleys ask if they are related to old Levi Farley. Pass the word, please. Contact Glenn D. Hopkins with any info. Thank you for your help. Glenn D. Hopkins [email protected]
