Kathie and everyone. I have a Randolph Moss McComas was born on 26 Oct 1870 in Lincoln County, WV. His father was Payton (or Peyton) McComas and his mother was Lucratia (I don't have last name with me). He died on 24 Mar 1955 in Summers County, WV and where buried in the Greenbrier Cemetery there in Summers County. I think he worked for the Railroad, will look again. He was also a acholic. This is were I think his son Bob got it from. He married Eliza Gertrude McGhee, she was the daughter of John ?Taylor McGhee and Leanna "Luanna" Rife. Eliza was born in May of 1878 in Summers County, WV. She was born May 1878 (don't have day, Kathie, this is one that I need checked). She died in Paxton, Indiana will living with one of the daughters. Body was sent back to be buried beside her husband. I have that date at home on a piece of paper that I found yesterday. She was married to Randolph at the age of 22 as stated in the 1930 Census that would give you the marriage year. She was 49 according to the 1930 census. I assume they were married in Summers county since she was living there. Could someone please check the records for me. If you are working the McComas Line, specially if they come from the Cabell County. Payton came from Cabell and he had a couple of his children from Lincoln County before coming from Cabell. Payton was in the Civil War and fought for the Conferate Army. He was in the 9th Infantry of West Virgina. He was wound in the left leg. In the 1890 Special Census his post office Address was Ona, West Virginia. The Census was in SD 2 and ED 12; Minor Division Barbourville, WV. Children: Robert Swinney McComas born 26 May 1914 in Hinton, Summers County, West Virginia. He died here in Brevard County, Florida on 9 Jul 1975. They have two other children that I have from the Christine (born in 1908, West Virginia) and Lillian (born in 1911 in West Virginia) The years came from the 1930 Census Records for Summers County. They are both married according to Mom, but she does remember who and when. In the 1930 Census Christine 2as 22, Lillian was 19 and Robert was 15. Any help would be appreciated. Kathie and everyone. On of my major problem is will my great aunt Winnie Florida Lilly. She was born in 1886 in Raleigh County, West Virginia to Isaac James Lilly and Susan Baker Stovall. I have no problem with this. She married Emanuel W. Frey, not sure when or where. It could had been in Summers County, but that would have been before Mom and her parents and sister came back to West Virginia in 1927 from New Mexico. Anyone everyone called him Manuel for short. According to everyone his name was Emanual. He is in the 1930 Census as M.W. Frey, with just her and him listed. She remembers that he died in the 30's. I find somewhere Sept 1930. He worked for the C&O Railroad. He overdrank and was drunk a lot. Actually he didn't want buried in West Virginia. He wanted taken back to Ohio so that he would be buried in the Family Plot in the Frey Cemetery. Well they found him died. Mom said that he was do pickled from being drunk so much that they would enbomb him and he could be taken across the state line. So Grandda was suppose to have paid off some people and they took him to Ohio to be buried. Well the courthouse said they don't have any records, but I was sure when in the 30's he died. This was one of the things that I wanted Kathie to check on. The Furnial home can't tell me anything anymore because of the new law. They send me back to the courthouse. But we are not sure if a Death Certifice was done. I thought that his father of John D. Frey, but since I renew my Ancestry.Com with everything. I was looking him up today and all I find is the 1930 census record, but I found the record of the Father John D. Frey and the mother lised in Ohio and he is not on the record of Kid of kids. I guess this may be one of the times I have been burned by the Moman Library records I could use some help on this Thanks When I was in West Virginia quit a few years ago, I try to check on the records at the Train Musuem was not open and the story said they were out of time the the next week when I was gone. I not sure if they had those records. I had also wanted to see if they had a old schedule of the route from Hinton in 1903/05 to see what the schedule would be like from Hinton to Alomoagordo, Territory of New Mexico to see how my grandparent (Louden Gilbert Lilly and Ella Leah Gore) travel there after they got married. My mother and her sisters were borned out there. The moved out there and homesteaded and grandda worked for the government by being the lumberjack boss (lumbermill that they had)upon the mountain at Cloudcroft, New Mexico for a long time (It was six months out of the year. They could do it in the winter. To Cold. Try it one year and they nearly straved to death) Thanks Sandy Moten Cocoa, Forida
John was my Great Great Grandfather. He arrived in Summers County (Green Sulphur area) 1879/1880, from Floyd County, VA. Many Coxes migrated from place to place during that time frame but most seemed to have gone South to the Carolinas, TN or KY. Could it be he went to Summers because he had relatives there? RE: JOHN D. COX, Jr, b. 16 Jul 1822, Monroe Co., (W)V, d. 2 Mar 1900, Summers Co, WV (and his Descendants) - Likeness of first names of their descendants are so numerous and this further leads me to ask? Were they related. So, two questions to the list: (1) anyone know of any connection?? - (2) Any male descendants from John D. taken a DNA test? I have taken the 12 Marker DNA test and have not gotten any matches so far; however, this program for Genealogy Research is still on the ground floor and even though I have not matched anyone yet, I surely have eliminated several large Cox families from further consideration in my search for THOMAS COX. Thanks in advance for any responses I get to this posting. John Cox in SD Who was THOMAS COX - Born VA. ca 1798

My line of Graham's left Virginia in 1836 they were from what is now Lowell West Virginia, Talcott and Hinton was not even their at that time, no railroad either, no dam at Hinton , they went to Rushville Illinois then to a place on what was called Crooked Creek and platted the town of Birmingham Illinois, they started a grist mill and saw mill, a store, church, and a school their, most are buried their on the top of a little hill with woods all around in what is now called Noel Cemetery, in its heyday their may have been 500 people living their now maybe 20, at one time it was on the trail towards the Mormon settlement in Western Illinois and also the Oregon trail, and the California trail during the Gold rush of 1848-49 , in 1836 this was wilderness their were still Indian's in the area, no roads most travel was by rivers or horse back, any goods are merchandise had to be purchased in St.Louis and shipped up the river by boat, My Graham's came to be suppliers to the many people heading West, for Land are Gold , funny thing they were walking by some of the most productive land in the United States to go out West to some of the poorest of Rocks and sand, Richard Graham
Jean, are you related to Mae Dodd? I think she was a teacher there, some years ago. Yes, in fact I have a letter from her written a few years before she died. It's a long story, but I was adopted as a little kid..and in 1992 I found my siblings and aunts, cousins, etc. But no one was into genealogy or knew anything about the family. What I did find was that my mother was born in Hinton...so my friend who was helping me find everyone, made some calls there and was given the name of Mae as the "town historian'...and I wrote to her and she sent me the nicest letter...told me she was a cousin...but I don't know who her father was, never got to that.. In 1999, my daughter and I went to a reunion there, and I met some of my kin and had a wonderful time getting to know them. It's funny, we were at a restaurant, and a guy came over to my daughter and said something about not seeing her in so many years since high school..LOL...she told him she wasn't even from WV, but RI and he said..well isn't your name ..Dodd??? She had to tell him NO, but we were there for a Dodd reunion. Everyone thought it was just amazing. Another thing was, when my Lori got out of high school, she went to work at a nursing home. Her 1sst patient, was a man called Pappy Dodd, and she never knew he was her own great grandfather until years later when I found the family... And Mae told me what her hobbies were, and they were the same as mine.. including writing.. ceramics, etc. so see, some things DO stay with the adoptee. I should write a book I guess. Have a nice day...Jean

Hi Kathie: I had hoped to get to Hinton myself this summer but don't know if I can make it. I have a particular problem that I am hung up on. My great-great-grandfather was Madison C. Meadows (not to be confused with a Madison D. Meadows of about the same age who lived in Summers County as well). I cannot locate Madison after 1874 (when he supplied information for the marriage of his son Nathaniel R. Meadows). Madison's wife was Mary Ann Garten Meadows. If you can find anything about their deaths I would appreciate it (they are in the 1870 census). Madison was born about 1834/1836, as was Mary Ann Garten. Anything at all would help (I don't necessarily need copies of paperwork, just information, but I am happy to pay you for your services). The courthouse is in an old large red brick building; I am not sure of exact street address but I can find it if you need it. Thanks for the offer to help. From Bluestone State Park, you will exit left on to WV 20 and proceed toward Hinton. As you head to Hinton, you will pass the Bluestone Dam on your right. In a short time, you will come to a bridge across the river but I believe you should continue another couple of miles to another bridge. After crossing the river there, take the first right for one block and then another right. The large red brick building on your left is the court house. There is usually ample parking around court house square, although most of it is metered. In the court house, go to the County Clerk's office, on the first floor, and tell one of the three or four ladies there that you wish to examine official documents. You will be escorted to the records room and if the Clerk or assistant clerk has time, she will offer further assistance. The will also photo-copy documents, for a fee. Conrad Miller.
