    3. I doubt they were pictures of the Col as he died well before their was pictures, as they never came into being till around 1860 to 65 around the Civil war time, the Col was at the time of the American Revolutionary war he built the log home somewhere around 1760/65 , I have seen where he was gathering horses and supplies of food, blankets, and things that the Army would need during the war with the British, as far as being in any battles, no I haven't seen that, he was in the Virginia Militia and can be documented by the Daughters and Son's of the American Revolution , I think David Graham Ballengee lived at Clayton for many years and was a postmaster their if I remember right his grandmother was a daughter of Col.James Graham , somewhere I have a newspaper clipping where he had write up as being the oldest are the longest postmaster on record, I don't remember which it was, The Col was my GGGGrandfather also, if I can be of help I will try to do so contact me, Richard Graham ----- Original Message ----- From: "marlem" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 7:17 PM Subject: [WVSUMMER] graham family pictures lowell question > Does anyone have copies of the pictures of the Grahams that are in the > bedroom on the second floor of the GRAHAM HOUSE? > I think it may have been the Col James and his wife. > Also > > Has anyone ever found the military history of COL JAMES GRAHAM? > COL OF WHAT MILITARY BRANCH ? > My husbands family descend from the David Graham Ballengee line.Any help > would be greatly appreciated > Margie > [email protected] > > > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the > areas they lived. 2. The information posted about "Summers County" W V was very informative. My husband's family is from Dunns, WV. This is a very small town (farmland) and runs along the Summers/Mercer County line. We have 17 acres of property that is about 70% Mercer and 30% Summers County. This land was part of a 150+ acre property that originally belonged to my Mother-in-law's great-grandparents. My Father-in-law's family originated in Floyd Co. VA and moved to Summers County. They walked "down the mountain" to the Dunns Church on the river (Mercer County). So in my research a neighbor's house could be in the next county. I wonder if a birth or death record might be slightly off because a midwife or who ever filled out the records where not exactly sure on the county line. Example being our property is in both counties and yet one connected piece of land. We pay taxes in Mercer and records are in Mercer. So if someone was born in a home on one side of the property and died in a home on the other side of the property -- the address would be the same, but in reality the county would be different. This area is country and many people were born at home and died at home. Hospital addresses are not as vague, although they often are a different county than the "home address". 3. I don't have my hands on the record at the moment, but I recall seeing a record that included Pipestem and Bluestone at the turn of the 1800s and that record was in a Giles County census. Finding records in various counties is always interesting. Botetourt has some Monroe records. Melva Wheelwright

    3. RICHARD & GLENN not to confuse you but do not forget GILES CO in Va. for early records and even possibly MONTGOMERY CO in Va [Have not been there yet myself] as the Hinton area is supposed to have been known as Leatherwood when THAT IT WAS GILES County. The evolution of the acreage that is now Summers seems to have been such a place. Giles Co even has a volunteer in the genealogy room. Funny but it seems that early on you could live and die in the same general area and still have lived in several counties and a couple of different states. Would this have depended on which county they were closest to, or would they have went wherever their roads would have taken them.
