    2. Thank you very much! And very interesting!! This opens up a whole new "can of worms" for research. Only the marriage records would help me to confirm Judith Meador or Lizzie Holroyd. Since one of the grandchildren (I think it was) named Lina Meadows (Meadors) as his mother's mother there must be something to that. Thanks again so very much. 3. KAREN -in "A New River Heritage" by Wm Sanders on page 62 of Vol I it says: --BALLARD P. Shumate, owned the Mercer Salt Works and nine hundred acres after the civil war, and was later the postmaster at Pipestem. He is buried at the Pipestem Neely-Ellison Cemetery, together with his three successive wives, Lizzie Holroyd, Melissa Huff, and Alice Skaggs." No mention of a Judith Meador as wife. Lizzie is a nickname for Elizabeth and possibly that is the "J. E." you want to identify. You also mentioned a daughter but show last name as Farley not Shumate, married?. ________________________________________________________________________ Note: [everything written is also subject to errors] -on page 189 of Vol II in grave stones listed it says: B.P.Shumate ("Bal") "Born Bluff City, Va., Dec. 10, 1842 Died Athens, W.Va., Mar. 11, 1915" MELISSA Shumate "Died Jan. 11, 1901 35 yrs., 4 months and 1 day." JUDITH Shumate, "wife (1st) of B.P.Shumate Died 1892" Note: B.PShumate's third wife, Alice, outlived him. An urn at the foot of Ballard Shumate's grave is inscribed "ALICE". _________________________________________________________________________ There are thirteen page references indexed for Ballard P. and I have not read them all yet. Many, many, many Shumate entries in the first three Volumes [there are 5 in all] concerning this family. I believe this may be the cemetery across the road from the old Pipestem Post Office on Rt 20 where Ballard P. was postmaster. 3. Have you tried the 2002 Mercer County History book? There are eight large three column pages on FARLEY relations and even some references from Mr. Hopkins history on the FARLEY FAMILY. Likewise, several Farley - Cook, etc short family articles can be found in the 1987 Mercer County History and an article in the 1984 edition takes Farley history from 1623. Good luck. I have checked for a copy of the book by AA Hopkins for some time with no luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 2:14 PM Subject: [WVSUMMER] Looking for book by A.A. 1. SHUMATE, Ballard P. b. 10 Dec 1842
    2. Good morning listers! I am hoping to find someone that can shed some light on the 3 marriages of Ballard P. Shumate. I have been studying the census records from 1870-1910. In 1870 he is wife Judith E. (Meador?) . Looks like Judith was born about 1844. In 1880 he is still with Judith. In 1900 he is with J.E. b. Sept 1865 - married 5 years (abt 1895) and has 2 step-children: B. Huff-Step daughter b. March 1886 & J.H. Huff- Stepson b. Sep 1887. Who is this J.E. and what happened to her? In 1910 he is with Alice Rebecca (Skaggs) that he married abt 1902 and has another daughter, Vivian V. aged 5 years. I have seen many entries online for Ballard showing he was married to both a Judith E. Meador and Lina Meador. Judith supposed died in 1892. Their daughter's death record (Emma Balena Farley) shows her mothers name as Lina Meadows. Sure would love to hear from someone to help straighten this out. 3. I have a few pages copied from the A.A. Hopkins book sent to me by my sister but she does not remember who sent them to her. You might check the Summers County Library in Hinton WV to see if they have a copy or know where you could get one Also check with the Summers County Historical Society. My Cooks married several Farleys so they are added to the mix of relatives. Shirley

    2. Seeing these coal mining accidents on T.V. remind us all of the olden day mine disasters and how the families suffered. I know it was and is a way of life but I don't know how they manage to stay sane while living on the edge. I visited those Endless Caverns in VA one year and the guide told us to look up--I don't remember how far down we were but that was the first and last time for me. And this nothing compared to where the miners go. Lordy Doris Snyder

    3. Sandy are you talking about the 1899 David Graham book, yes it is available on line, I have a copy of it I purchased at the Graham Home in Lowell, but would much rather use the online version as it is easier to read and move around in, I have talked to several Graham descendants that have one of the original books most say it is threadbare, anyway it has a lot of history in it, my Graham's that went to Schuyler county Illinois are also their, funny thing about that , when I started researching I new back to my Grandfather Graham here in Middletown, was on the internet and ran into the 1899 David Graham book so I downloaded it and it set on my desk for several months, one day while reading it I came upon the passage of these Graham's leaving Virginia and going to Schuyler County Illinois in 1836, I had a copy of my Grandfather's death certificate and it said his father was from Virginia, and his mother from Pa, well it still didn't sink in clearly so I took a trip to Schuyler County and after a couple of days I found the cemetery they were all buried in it was all grown over with trees, I did find some Graham tomb stones, I don't think anyone had been their in the last 100 years, then going to the town of Rushville where their is a genealogy society I looked up records on the family, and indeed it is mine from Lowell Virginia, since then I have had the Cemetery cleared of trees , Brush, Briars, and have grass growing their, the little cemetery is sitting on a hill and all the white stones are facing East towards West Virginia and Scotland, their is a little creek that runs over the rocks at the bottom of the hill called Flour creek, a very beautiful place, Richard Graham ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moten, Sandra K" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 20, 2006 8:43 AM Subject: RE: [WVSUMMER] Vale, WV > Richard > > I found the book on line, it is neat.
