The Cook's lived in the Pipestem area between Hinton and Athens. I have been to the old Cook Cemetery at Pipestem but the names and dates have all worn off from the old field stones. The court house in Hinton has some records.

This is my first post on the Summers Co list. My g-grandmother was Martha Ann Cook and she always said she was born in Summers Co even though her DOB was 4-20-1859. She died in Raleigh Co in 1949. Martha's death certificate states that her fathers name was "Geo Cook" and her mothers maiden name was Nancy Lane. Martha was married twice: To Richard Mitchell-date and place of marriage and subsequent divorce unknown. Mitchell was Sheriff of Wyoming Co during this marriage so that was 1880 give or take a year or two. Her second marriage was to Samuel Oliver Mills of Egeria, WV and that marriage took place 2-11-1888 in Raleigh Co. That marriage lasted until the death of Samuel on 3-18-1942. I found a VA birth certificate for Nancy Ann Lane indicating her DOB as 3-13-1830 in Virginia and DOD of 2-08-1924 in Huntington. In addition, I have found a WV death certificate for a brother of Martha Ann Cook. It lists his name as William R. Cook, DOB 3-27-1852 in Hinton WV, FN George W. Cook (born in VA) and MN as Nancy Lane also born in VA. My question is what records might be available for George W. Cook to establish his existence in Summers Co during the lifespan of this family. The mother, Nancy Lane, was born in 1830, I would estimate that George W. Cook was born around 1920-30 and the oldest known child was born in 1852 so the marriage likely was around 1850. Are any lookups available for any of those events and does anyone have further suggestions on researching this family. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas, Wade Halsey
I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the ANDERSON and VEST Families. The first is a photograph of John ANDERSON and his wife Sada which was taken at the Anderson Studio in Kearney, Nebraska. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with John and Sada appearing to be in their 20's or 30's at the time. In addition to their names, someone has also written "Dad's oldest Brother" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is one of Will VEST, his wife Sophia, and son Elmer. The photograph has no studio or location noted, but appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the couple in their 20's and Elmer just a baby. In addition to their names, someone has also written "Dad's sister" on the back of the photograph. The handwriting on both photographs is by the same person so I know that the photographs are connected in some manner. Based on limited research I believe that the first photograph is one of John Franklin Anderson b. 17 Oct 1860 in Rosebys Rook, VA to parents Abram ANDERSON and Jane DAVIS. John married Sadie May WELLS on 1 Jan 1896 in Divide, NE and died 19 Sept 1946 in Elmcreek, NE and is buried there. I was able to trace the couple through the various census records as follows: 1900 census of Gibbon, NE: John ANDERSON, age 39, born Oct 1860, married 4 years, born VA, parents born VA, a Farmer Sadie M. ANDERSON, wife, age 27, born Nov 1872, married 4 years, no children, born IA, parents born IA Abram ANDERSON, Father, age 73, born Oct 1826, a widower, born VA, parents born VA 1910 census of Elm Creek, NE: John ANDERSON, age 49, married 14 years, born VA, parents born VA, a Mail Carrier Sadie M. ANDERSON, wife, age 37, married 14 years, no children, born IA, parents born IA/OH Lillian P. DOBBINS, boarder, age 24, married 6 years, 2 children/1 living, born NE, parents born PA/IN Weldon DOBBINS, boarder, age 2, born NE, parents born NE 1920 census of Elm Creek, NE: John F. ANDERSON, age 59, born VA, parents born VA, a Mail Carrier Sadie M. ANDERSON, age 47, born IA, parents born IA/OH I believe that the man in the second photograph is William Francis VEST b. 22 Jan 1868 in Summers, WV to parents James Jefferson VEST and Elizabeth PLUMLY. William died 4 Nov 1939 in Kearney, NE. I believe that Sophia may be a younger sister to John Franklin ANDERSON, but I'm not sure. I have traced the couple through various census records as follows: 1900 census of Rusco, NE: William VEST, age 32, born Jan 1868, married 5 years, born WV, parents born VA/WV, a Farmer Sophia VEST, wife, age 24, born Jan 1876, married 5 years, 1 child/1 living, born IA, parents born WV Elmer W. VEST, son, age 4, born Feb 1896, born NE 1910 census of Rusco, NE: William VEST, age 42, married 15 years, born WV, parents born VA, a Farmer Sophia VEST, wife, age 34, married 15 years, 2 children/2 living, born IA, parents born VA Elmer VEST, son, age 14, born NE Richard VEST, son, age 6, born NE 1920 census of Rusco, NE: W. VEST, son, age 23, born NE Richard VEST, son, age 16, born NE I am hoping to locate someone from these families so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Hello I am searching for any information on the name Kessler/Kesler. Dr. Archibald Kenton (A.K.) first practiced in Alderson and Hominy Falls, WV. He later moved to Hinton, where he opened a small hospital. March 1898 Archibald K. Kessler, M.D., opened a hospital in Clarksburg, WV on the corner of Water Street and Washington Avenue. In 1904 Dr. A.K. Kessler decided to come to Huntington to build a second institution. The result was the Kessler Hospital and Sanitarium, which was located on the southwest corner of 4th Ave. and 5th. St. In addition to the hospital, Dr. Kessler started a school of nursing in that same year. In 1907, fourteen women were graduated from the school. After Dr. Henry Hatfield stepped down as governor of WV in 1917, he went into partnership with Dr. Kessler at his new location built in 1910 and opening in 1911, at 1st. St. and 6th Ave. It was also in 1917 that the main three-story building was added. The Kessler-Hatfield Hospital, was renamed Huntington Memorial Hospital in 1928. Dr. A.K. Kessler and his wife Heneretta (Etta) Price lived at 326 W 6th Ave in 1944. They attended Fifth Ave Baptist Church and had four children, Opie Cecil Kessler b & d 1894, Noca/Nokah Kessler m. Festes Oval Marple, Archibald Donald Kessler m. Perk Vinson and Margie Kessler m. Lewis Gates Hoyt. I would be interested in exchanging with anyone working these Marple, Vinson or Hoyt lines that could give me more information. A brother of Dr. Archibald K. Kessler was Dr. Joseph Crane Kessler. He ran the Gauley Summit Sanitarium with another brother Dr. Daniel Peck Kessler in Cowen, WV. He moved to Huntington in 1914 to be associated with the Kessler-Hatfield Hospital for a number of years. He moved his practice to Hamlin, WV in 1926 where he remained active until 1940 when he retired because of ill health. Several items of historical interest belonging to him were donated to a medical museum in Huntington, WV. Joseph C. Kessler and his wife Delora Belle Kagy, had three children, Thelma Ruth Kessler, Arthur Kagy Kessler b1905 & d 1906, Terzah Elizabeth Kessler m. Wilbur Clair Dickson. Dr Joe and Delora also raised a nephew of Dr Joe's named James (Jim or Jimmy) Peck Kessler b. 1913. By fall of 1922 James P. Kessler he was living in Huntington, WV and attending the 5th Ave. Baptist Church and was still attending there in 1926. In April 1928 he graduated elementary school and in May 1933 he graduated from Carroll District High School, Hamlin, WV. Any information at all about James P. Kessler would be appreciated. No bits of information on any of the above would be to small and I would be most appreciative for any help. Thanks you, Karen Kessler Cottrill WV Kessler/Kesler/Keslar Family Historian I am making no claims that the above information is correct and should not be posted as so. This is being given as personal information to be used for further research and not all has been documented.
Thank you to all of you who responded to my query regarding Jackson Farley's Civil War Service. I have been unable to locate a death date for Jackson. If anyone has that information I would certainly love to know. I'm also interested in knowing if any Battle Flags from the Co. D 17th VA Calvary Militia have been known to exist and photographed. Karen: most larger libraries may have "The VirginiaRegimentalHistories Series" books. 17th Virginia Cavalry by Nelson Harris Copyright 1994 ISBN-1-56190-062-1 page 69 "Farley, Jackson Private, Co D; enl 2/23/62 in Mercer County; absent, horse detail 10/31/63; absent, sick 10/20/64." previous is from the roster listing. I did not read thru the earlier 60 page text of battles etc for the 17th to see if he was mentioned elsewhere as many are in the narative. In Miller's 'History of Summers County,' Copyright 1908, we find on page 213 under the listing 'Confederate soldier's of Jumping Branch District:' "Jackson Farley, 17th Va. Cav., McCausland's Br" Based on the above, although I have not run the cd to verify, I am sure you would also find 'Jackson Farley' listed in Jack L. Dickson's book "Tattered Uniforms and Bright Bayonets: West Virginia's Confederate Soldiers." originally 1995, copyrighted second edition 2004. In "A New River Heritage Vol II" by Wm Sanders Copyright 1992 page 168 speaking of River Ridge Cemeteries he lists "Jackson Farley, Company D, 17th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army (No Date).' Note: The 17th Virginia Cavalry was Col. Wm H. French's regiment: most of the area members of ten Mercer County Confederate companies of recruits belonged to Col. W. H. French's organization or to his brother, Napoleon French's organization (30th Virginia Cavalry), which was captured and split up and part of which was called 'French's Sharpshooters." [my note: these are regiments; General McCausland was a Brigade commander.] I don't know if it is the same Jackson but in Wm Sanders Vol III page 173 in a chapter on Farley/Cook families I find "Andrew Farley (Dinah)--Malinda, Wilson, Joel, Jackson, Ida, Mary, Anna, Thomas, Savina, James, Melvin -71 children." I assume this is a list of the children for Andrew Farley & Dinah Cook, daughter of Daniel Cook, and that among their 11 children they had 71 children (or grand children of Andrew). Hope this helps........Let me know please. Hey gang, Just a short reminder to the vets and newbies at this site of my free research for the asking here at Andersonville. There are more than 41000 Union soldiers on record from all states, and 598 are from ( Union ) Virginia / West Virginia. This is certainly an interesting subject. I was reading a WV census and saw a relative saying their first child was b in Iowa. I just assumed someone had made a BIG mistake. Some years later we found a sheet written by the family (but never finished) that talked of getting m on Saturday morning early so someone could drive them in the buckboard to the depot at Millboro to catch the train. They went all around out west and had a store for a while but decided after about a year that they really missed their family & WV and came back (with the baby b in Iowa), I had another WV/FL story from a few years back. I was looking for our WV Cackleys in 1880. Could not find them. The only James listed was in FL so I just skipped right over him. A few months later later I mentioned it to a genealogy "cousin" in OH and she proceeded to tell me that she had seen a letter written by one of the relatives IN FL. Well, I almost fell off the chair. It was them after all. After making it down there, the father, mother and married son all died with the Yellow Fever. Just last week I received an e-mail from someone working at the Heritage Village in FL telling me that the house of the son that died is on display there and they also transported the "outhouse", You just never know where your info is going to come from. I have always wondered how people traveled back in say 1830, some of my kinfolk left Lowell Virginia now Lowell West Virginia and traveled to Illinois, at that time their was no roads and their would have been many river's to cross, the Ohio and the Mississippi and the Illinois just to name a few of the big ones, I have no record of their journey left down threw time, and it has always been a wonderment as to the hardships they must have went threw making that journey, along with the men their was Women and children on the trip, I suppose they could have used the river's to make their way by coming down the Ohio to the Mississippi then going up to the Illinois River to land in Schuyler Co Illinois, if that would have been possible in that day and time, I guess I will never know for sure and will always wonder just how they did it, they had to be tough in those days to make that kind of journey, Richard Graham
Hello I see someone has already answered you about the Summers Co Cemetery book for Hilltop information. As to the obit, Hinton library has a genealogy section with many family articles and obits alphebetically on microfilm back during the time of death that you mentioned. Additionally they have the full newspapers on microfilm [up to 1990 I believe] and hard copies after 1990 to date that you can search. Good luck I understand that Charleston also has all local WV papers on microfilm and with the date of death, the obit should be easy to find. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 10, 2006 7:24 PM Subject: [WVSUMMER] Hilltop Cemetery, Hinton, West Virginia > > Does anyone have a cemetery list for Hilltop Cemetery in Hinton? > I am looking for more information on Edna Huddleston Clark . Kathie, I have the Summers Co. cemetery book. The listings are according to last name instead of cemetery groupings and, yes, Edna is listed, as is R. D. What exactly are you looking for? I can go through and try to get a list of all burials there for you if that's what you'd like. Let me know. Sandy ref your addition below: author William Sanders recording of Judith Ballard's tombstone has (1st wife) of Ballard Shumate "died 1892" although he (Sanders) does not name them, he mentions that there are "Several graves of infant children from B.P.Shumate's first marriage to Judith Shumate are located in a row near B.P. Shumate's grave." Additionally there is a younger Ballard P Shumate (1880-1946) and family in the same cemetery, Junior???? Sanders did not show a relationship in the cemetery information. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2006 6:14 AM Subject: Re: [WVSUMMER] SHUMATE, Ballard P. 1842-1915 > In a message dated 2/4/2006 9:47:36 AM Eastern Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > >> >> I hope to find someone who can shed some light on the 3 marriages of >> Ballard P.
