    3. While visiting Cairo, WV, I learned that it was known as McKinney's Settlement in about 1822. Cairo is located on Route 31 and Ritchie County was formed in 1843 from Wood, Lewis and Harrison Counties. On May 4, 1843 in Washington Co., OH, Margaret Dye (1823-1896) married Robert S. McKinney of Wood County, VA. Margaret was the daughter of Catherine King and Henry Dye who lived outside of Palestine in the early 1800s (present day Wirt Co., WV). Henry later lived by Route 31 on Worthington Creek in Wood County - several miles north of Deerwalk. Does anyone know the name of the parents of Robert S. McKinney and was he from the Cairo, Ritchie County, WV area? Robert does not appear with Margaret (Dye) McKinney in the 1850 Washington Co., OH census. In 1850 Margaret McKinney is living in Harmar (west side of Muskingum River and now part of Marietta, OH) next to her sister Jane (Dye) Kinnard who was the wife of Matthew Kinnard. It is believed that Robert S. McKinney died sometime between 1849 and 1853. Margaret (Dye) and Robert S. McKinney were the parents of: Robert D. McKinney (born ca 1846) married Mary Florence Martin on August 21, 1873 in Washington Co., OH and according to family tradition, he owned a general store in Petroleum, WV in the late 1800s. Sophia McKinney (born ca 1849) married John Henry Britton on Dec. 4, 1873 in Washington Co., OH and later lived in Denver CO. Margaret Dye McKinney married a John Smallwood in about 1852. They lived in Grafton, WV in 1860 where John worked on the railroad. By 1870, Margaret and her seven children are living back in Washington Co., OH. Does anyone have information about Robert S. McKinney? Or John Smallwood? Millie
